Most migrants only had work for part of the year, four to six months. Families averaged an income of $350.00 to

$450.00 each year. Much of their wages went to maintain their cars (Meltzer 65).

Summary: Shorten a long passage in your own words

One of the major crops in the San Joaquin Valley was cotton. Because it was irrigated, the yield was three times the

national average. However, the migrant families suffered from poor wages and the high cost of food, transportation

and utilities. The children suffered the most, often from malnutrition (Meltzer 69-73).

Long quotation (4 or more lines):

Through the characters of George and Lennie, Steinbeck describes the simple aspirations of

poor landless laborers:

His voice was growing warmer. “An’ we could have a few pigs. I could build a

smoke house like the on gran’pa had, an’ when we kill a pig we can smoke the

bacon an’ hams, and make sausage an’ all like that…When the fruit come in

we can can it – and tomatoes, they’re easy to can.” Lennie watched him with

wide eyes, and old Candy watched him too. Lennie said softly, “We could live

offa the fatta the lan’.”(57)

George and Lennie try to lead a simple, honest life, unlike the selfish and dishonest behavior

of the landowners.
