Highlights from this astounding collection, which includes iconic garments from fashion houses such as Dior, Chanel, Yves Saint Laurent and Alexander McQueen, are currently being exhibited at the NGV for the first time. FRIENDS OF HAZELHURST PRESIDENT’S ADDRESS Beginning my address on a very positive note, at the opening of the exhibition ARTEXPRESS, the FRIENDS OF HAZELHURST ART AWARD was won by Jamie Wong, formally of Beverley Hills Girls High, for her sculptural work “Unnatural Selection”. Jamie and her Visual Arts & Visual Design Teacher Laura Re can be seen below with Jamie’s work. By the very fact that Hazelhurst is staging ARTEXPRESS coupled with the Friends Art Award reinforces our support for emerging artists.

To complement the already marvellous restoration of the historic Hazelhurst cottage, the Friends committee has purchased two pieces of art deco furniture, a dining table and a side board. The dining table will take pride of place for our exhibition morning teas. Please come along to our next morning tea to reacquaint yourself with the beautiful cottage and see for yourself our new purchases.

At the recent Friends of Hazelhurst Annual General Meeting, some committee members stepped down and we thank all of them for their years of selfless work. A special thank you to Sharon Langhans for her long contribution to the Friends of Hazelhurst and the Newsletter editorial.

We welcome new members to the committee who have generously stepped in to fill these positions. A list of your Friends Committee for 2019 is shown on Page 2.

When things don’t go to plan, as President of Friends I must take full responsibility. Recently, I was contacted by a new Friends member who had not been receiving notifications from Friends. Upon investigation, it was discovered the person’s email address was incorrectly typed into the database. A sincere apology to our new member was given. To use an old marketing adage “the customer who complains is your best friend”. I would like to thank that member for their complaint as it highlighted a fault in one of our systems. Please, if you have any complaints don’t hold back, the committee needs to know in order to formulate a solution, move forward and improve.

I hope to see you at our upcoming events & look forward to talking to you. See the Diary Dates on Page 8.

FEATURED ARTIST AT THE SUTHERLAND SHIRE LIBRARY THROUGH APRIL IS ANGELA ILIADISAngela has many varied works and a selection of her contemporary artworks will be on display at the library.

She combines full-time teaching in an International Baccalaureate school and a career as a practising visual artist. She has a Master of Education as well as a Master of Art and as a visual artist, her art practice spans painting, drawing, printmaking and digital photo art. Her works seek to use lines, colour and principals of design to create artworks that evoke feelings. Inspired by nature, colour, lines and the creative process, Angela’s award winning paintings, drawings, photographs and prints are regularly exhibited and sold within Australia and can be seen in Russia, Philippines, Greece, Germany, France and the United States.

In Search of Imagination: Constructing a Praxis of Creative Effort “I create art because I believe that art is part of who we are. We need art because it makes us complete human beings. Art is healing and keeps us healthy. Art is communication and we need art to have a full range of expression. Art is a shared experience, it keeps us connected and offers a reason to come together and share in an experience.”

FEATURED ARTIST AT THE SUTHERLAND SHIRE LIBRARY THROUGH JUNE IS GERALDINE TAYLORAll her life, both in Lae, Papua New Guinea and in Innisfail, Nth QLD, Geraldine has been an ardent observer of the natural environment. “From a very early age, I drew the life and world around me and I strive to portray the personality of the wild and domestic creatures I paint. They are all such individuals. Colour within colour fascinates me and I experiment with it in all my paintings. It is a joyful journey.”

Geraldine is a Sydney artist her preferred mediums are gouache, acrylics, air brush and pencil. “My works range from traditional to contemporary in style and they display a great deal of detail and vibrancy of colour, which highlight my personal style”.

Much of her work is privately commissioned both nationally and internationally. It includes an extensive range of wildlife and pet portraits. The latter have been highly acclaimed for their likeness and portrayal of the individual character and personality of each pet. Geraldine’s work is held in private collections in USA, Britain, Ireland, Canada, India, Japan, Germany, New Zealand and throughout Australia.

A WORD FROM BELINDA HANRAHAN DIRECTOR HAZELHURST | MANAGER ARTS & CULTURE

Dear Friends,

I am fortunate to periodically have the opportunity to speak about all things Hazelhurst to community groups and hopefully encourage more new visitors to our wonderful arts centre. In expressing enthusiasm for the role art can play in the community I share favourite artist quotes – among these is by renowned French artist Edgar Degas:

“Art is not what you see, but what you make others see.”

Image: At the Celebratory Dinner with Ildiko Kovacs exhibition, 14 May 2011.

It so encapsulates the wonder and insight that artists give us and the opportunity to see the world through their eyes. To appreciate new perspectives and ideas.

This in many ways drives the exhibition program at Hazelhurst, to present a diverse and inspiring program.

We are honoured the National Gallery of Australia has chosen Hazelhurst as the NSW venue for their major exhibition of works by David Hockney, considered one of the most influential British artists of the 20th century. Hockney constantly sought to reinvent himself as an artist and this exhibition presents works from the NGA’s outstanding collection of his extraordinary and vibrant prints.

“I love new mediums. I think mediums can turn you on, they can excite you; they always let you do something in a different way” David Hockney

David Hockney: Prints 1961-2015 A touring exhibition from the NGA 13 July to Sunday 8 September at Hazelhurst Regional Gallery.

There are so many highlights in our Autumn arts programs which I hope you can take part in.

On a sadder note: Our Patron, mentor and great supporter, Edmund Capon sadly passed away in March and will be dearly missed by the Hazelhurst community. Officially opening Hazelhurst in 2000 and ever willing to contribute to its artistic life Edmund Capon became our Patron in 2010. We had the privilege of enjoying his insights

to art on many occasions and were the beneficiaries of his generosity in curating one of our most successful exhibitions The Triumph of Modernism in 2015. Many of us enjoyed his witty discourse at events and how he could be charming and oh so erudite. I will personally miss him very much and am grateful for the wisdom, vitality and wit he shared with me over many years. Our condolences to his wife Joanna Capon, his family and many friends. Vale Edmund.

Looking forward to seeing you at Hazelhurst and the Entertainment Centre.

Cheers,

Belinda Hanrahan

EXHIBITIONS: IN THE REGIONAL GALLERY

ARTEXPRESSUntil 22 April 2019

ROCOCOLONIAL4 May – 30 June

RocoColonial brings together contemporary Australian artists working across painting, sculpture, design and fashion who explore themes at the intersection of the terms Rococo and Colonial. In 1770 while Lieutenant Cook was charting the east coast of Australia on the other side of the world Marie Antoinette was marrying the future Louis XVI of France, this year coincidentally marking the end of the Rococo and the beginning of the Colonial. Then as now, issues of radical social and economic change were beginning to sow the seeds of revolution.

RocoColonial is a major artist-initiated project by Gary Carsley and presented by Hazelhurst Arts Centre in partnership with Bathurst Regional Art Gallery (BRAG).

The official opening for RocoColonial will be Friday 3 May. There will be an artists’ talk led by Gary Carsley from 5pm in the gallery with the official opening from 6pm. All welcome. Image: Deborah Kelly ‘Venus envy’ 2019. Chinese ink, paper collage and UV varnish.

AUTUMN SCHOOL HOLIDAY PROGRAM

15 - 26 April 2019An opportunity for children from 6 years to high school age to be creative in a range of media. Enrolling now.

TERM 2 classes commence Mon 29 April 2019 enrolling now.

All program details available online.

An annual favourite, the ARTEXPRESS exhibition showcases a selection of Higher School Certificate visual artworks across a range of media featuring work by 50 of NSW’s most talented young artists including the works of students from nine local schools.

This year there is a strong emphasis on drought and fire, waste, humanity’s negative impact on the environment, the minutiae of life, and the importance of our natural environment. In addition students also reveal their inner world as well: the impact of time, the escapism of digital games, the inner anxiety we all experience, and the fear and anger associated with life threatening illness.

Presented by Hazelhurst in partnership with NSW Department of Education and NSW Education Standards Authority.
