What The Friends are about• Raising the profile of the Kinneil Estate and Foreshore• Increasing awareness of both sites and their assets• Forming partnerships to promote/improve Kinneil Estate and Foreshore• Delivering member events• Developing a strategy for the estate and planning for the future

Overview of the year• Busy year with great events and publicity.• Bigger and better Roman Week – drawing on fact-finding trip to Hadrian’s Wall in 2012.• Launch of John Muir Way – through Kinneil• Lottery cash from Inner Forth Landscape Initiative – Kinneil to benefit

Overview of the year• Six open days at Kinneil House in 2013. Great feedback from the public but lower visitor numbers.• Concern over visitor numbers at Kinneil Museum.• Better start to 2014 – with increased numbers of visitors to Kinneil House and eight open days planned across this year.• Best ever Night at Kinneil Museum event in May 2014.

Raising the profile of KinneilIn 2013/14,we:• developed our website – www.kinneil.org.uk• increased our presence on Twitter – www.twitter.com/kinneil - and Facebook -www.fb.com/kinneil• produced posters and leaflets to promote the estate and Big Roman Week

Raising the profile of Kinneil• Social media is a great way to inform the public about events and help promote the estate and foreshore.

• With its help we can reach people right around the world.

We’ve nearly doubled our likes on Facebook. From 300 last June to 518 in June 2014.

Raising the profile of Kinneil• Our main website – www.kinneil.org.uk - is particularly popular. The site was viewed 23,000 times in 2013 – slightly down on 2012’s total.

• However, this year has been stronger with more than 14,000 views in just over five months.

Raising the profile of Kinneil• We also had strong – and free – PR support from Adrian and some of our partners.• Kinneil was named “walk of the week” by Scotland on Sunday in January 2014.• We’ve also had excellent local press coverage.• A big thanks to all our friends in the media for their support.

Away from the town, and a little inland, the history goes back even further at Kinneil House; not only a 17th-century seat of power but before that an area where the Romans built their most northerly fortification, the Antonine Wall which stretched across Scotland..”

Last year saw a drop in visitors to Kinneil House.

No Kinneil Heritage Day this August will be a challenge.

Big Roman Week a real success in 2013.

One of our biggest programmes to date, including fantastic walks and events along the Antonine Wall.

One of our biggest programmes to date, including fantastic walks and events along the Antonine Wall.

Our Hallowe’en event in 2013 had more visitors than the previous year ... But it wasn’t enough to boost overall totals for 2013.

2014 got off to a good start with a great link-up with the local silent film festival ... Nearly double the visitor numbers than in 2013.

Innovations like a visit from the “Mini Kelpies” in April 2014 helped recover visitor figures at Kinneil House this year.

We also opened the House for the first time at night – for our Night at Kinneil House and Museum in May 2014.

153 visitors in an HOUR and 70 folks on a bat walk!

EventsWe took stalls at the Victorian Street Fair in Bo’ness in May 2013 and 2014.

Our takings went up in 2013, helping to boost our funds. We had a publicity-only stall, supporting the new John Muir Way in 2014.

Forming partnerships

Forming partnerships• Inner Forth Landscape Initiative – the Heritage Lottery Fund awarded £2 million in funding. This could turn into £4 million across Forth Valley.

• Kinneil – in particular the Church and Foreshore – will benefit from early works.

• We supported the launch of the John Muir Way – which runs through Kinneil Estate and Foreshore. The route officially launched in April 2014.

Forming partnerships• We continued to foster successful partnerships with Step Forth, the walking group, local schools, Bo’net (the Bo’ness Networking Group), Bo’ness Community Council and others.•Big thanks to Madelene Hunt!

Member engagement• Members benefit from postal mailings and dedicated email updates and special member-only events. • Non-members are encouraged to sign up through Facebook/Twitter.• Outstanding – we still have to complete a member survey. Developing a future strategy• Delivered! New tourism signage for the Estate and Museum. But more needed.• Started! Consultation on refreshing the displays at Kinneil Museum.•Underway! A masterplan is being created for Kinneil Estate by Falkirk Community Trust. Expect full consultation this autumn.
