“Bringing art to the people and people to the arts” Belalie Wines The Picture Framer Th e Board, Staff and Volunteers of the Gallery Would like to thank you for your continued support and wish you a very Merry Christmas and a safe New Year Friends Newsletter Port Pirie Regional Art Gallery 3 Mary Elie Street, PO Box 481 Port Pirie SA 5540 Ph: 8633 0681 Fax: 8633 0672 Email: [email protected]Website: www.pprag.org.au Dear Friends of the Gallery Well here we are at the end of another amazing year of exhibitions, events and activities! We began 2017 with the truly stunning National Photographic Portrait Prize 2016 from the National Portrait Gallery, one of my favourites, but there was plenty more to come! The ‘Alice Springs Beanie Festival’ came to Port Pirie on its national tour ‘Colours of the Country 111, what fun! The humble ‘beanie’ as an art form. There were many other highlights during the year. What a privilege to host ‘Rough Medicine; Life and Death in the Age of Sail’ from the SA Maritime Museum with that hilarious performance by the ‘barber surgeon’ in the Port Pirie Regional Library, enthralling school children with his crazy antics as the ships surgeon on the high seas! ‘Class A ‘exhibitions such as these from significant arts institutions are vitally important to the Gallery to enhance the diversity of arts and culture we aspire to deliver in the exhibition program. The story of Port Pirie and the Smelter was celebrated with the last of the trilogy of history exhibitions ‘Transportation and Transformation; a city always evolving’. Again breaking visitor records! We move into the holiday season with photography, paintings in oils, acrylics and watercolours by local and regional artists, Clan Rodda, Annette Marner and Kirstie Jamieson and from the Adelaide Hills Proo Geddes, Sandi Hill and Alison Waye. 2018 will see a few changes as Gallery operations come under the umbrella of the Port Pirie Regional Council. As you may be aware funding from other sources such as Country Arts SA, who have supported galleries over many years, no longer directly fund regional art galleries. We had to look for an alternative to take us into a sustainable future, without losing our ‘Class A’ accreditation and quality of program delivery. What a busy year; I wish you all a Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays and look forward to once again celebrating all things in ‘art’ in 2018 with another full and exciting exhibition program.
