Marion O Resident of the Month

Marion LaVaughn Oldenburg is our featured resident this month. Marion has been with us since February 2018. She was born and raised in South Minneapolis, graduating from Roosevelt High in 1945. She met her husband, Elmer “Butch” Oldenburg, while weekending at her parents’ cabin in Prior Lake. They were married in 1948, celebrating 65 years together before Butch’s passing in 2013. They lived and raised their family in Jordan, MN. Marion and Butch had 10 children, 8 girls and 2 boys: Vickie, Vonnie, Pennie, Sherrie, Rick, Tracie, Trudie, Tammie, Leslie and Guy. She now has 18 grandchildren, 26 great grandchildren and 3 great, great grandchildren.

Marion is a member of St Paul’s Lutheran Church of Jordan, Church Ladies Aid and VFW 2854 Auxiliary. Her past times and hobbies were reading (anything and everything), doing crossword puzzles (the tougher the better), crocheting beautiful afghans for her many children and grandchildren, playing cards with friends and family and spending weekends at Big Butternut Lake in Luck, WI. (where she loved the campfires). She and Butch owned the Corner Bar in Jordan for a time. She also worked at Preferred Products and clerked at Jordan Wine & Spirits.

Although she wishes she could still be in her own home, she knows Friendship Manor is the best place for her today. And, being somewhat vision impaired, she is grateful and thankful for everything the staff does for her.

The Red Geranium, A Magical Plant

What is it about this red geranium that puts people at ease, makes them smile, and leads them to engage with each other? During observations at Leu Gardens in Orlando, FL, they found that geraniums of all colors get people’s attention, but red consistently generates the most smiles and interaction. As they observed dozen of encounters, they noticed that there was a drive to touch the leaves and flowers.

Geraniums are safe and non-toxic, although some people have a minor allergic reaction to skin contact with the leaves and stems. The flowers are considered edible and brighten salads, even a scoop of ice cream. They are easily started from cuttings and have few pests or problems. They have used them with a wide diversity of special populations and observed that all ages responded to the simple red geranium with more enthusiasm than pink – or white – flowered varieties. This was especially true of clients with Alzheimer’s and other forms or dementia.

Char’s Corner: KEEP CALM In 1939 Great Britain was preparing for World War II amidst widely publicized predicted mass air attacks. In an effort to keep people’s morale up, a poster was created and published around the Country. The poster’s message was “Keep Calm and Carry On”. That poster was lost until it resurfaced in 2000, and was again publicized. As a result, the first three words remain the same, but different spins have emerged. Residents in Char’s group recently offered their sayings. Some funny, some profound: Keep Calm and Be Happy Keep Calm and Don’t Worry About Others Keep Calm and Relax Keep Calm and Don’t Eat too Much Keep Calm and Sing Even if you Can’t Keep Calm and Enjoy Nature A sign at a local bakery is creative: Keep Calm and Donut Stress. We challenge readers to give us your idea for a sign. Char’s Group will vote on the most creative. You may win first place prize! Turn your entry in to TR or Char. Good Luck! THE FLAG

I can wave from their flagpole to many people passing by. I even have stars that resemble the ones you see in the sky.

I have stripes of different colors; they're made up of red and white. I'm put up in the daytime and then taken down at night.

People have called me "Old Glory," but my glory never fades. I'm hung from lots of windows and carried in every parade.

I've been torn in many battles to nothing but a rag. Americans salute me

because you see, I am their flag .

Friendship Manor Friendly Chatter

News from Friendship Manor Family Council

Greetings from the President Hello Everyone, On behalf of the Friendship Manor Healthcare Center Family Council, welcome to Spring! With each issue of the Friendship Manor Friendly Chatter, the Family Council will include an update of Friendship Manor family events and Family Council news. We will continue our focus on providing special activities and support for Friendship Manor activities for the residents. As always, your ideas are welcome. We would love to hear from residents’ families on ways to better the daily experience of loved ones at Friendship Manor. The Family Council has meetings scheduled this year on July 9th, August 6th, and November 5th. All meetings begin at 6:30 p.m. and members take turns bringing treats. Current council members are Dave Greening, Barbara Greening, Connie Kochlin, Ethel Schneider, Candy Kragthorpe, and Joan Hansen. As always, new members are welcome. Residents’ family members and people with experience caring for the elderly would be great additions to the Council. If interested in our meetings but unable to attend in person, you may phone into our meetings. This May, the Family Council will honor the wonderful staff at Friendship Manor with cookies during National Nursing Home week. Also, we will hold our annual fundraising raffle during the September Family Picnic. Donations of gift cards or other new items are very much welcome. We have added a quarterly Family Council contribution to purchase bird food to keep our feathered friends around for the enjoyment of the residents. In December we will host the annual Friendship Manor Family Christmas Party Potluck. Any singers out there who would like to walk the halls and sing carols? Please contact Dave Greening at [email protected] with any thoughts or suggestions for the Family Council to look into and to let us know if you would like to join us for council meetings or contribute to the fall raffle. Take care, Dave Greening President, Family Council

“Embracing a healing presence requires you to just be in the moment together.” - Nancy L. Kriseman, Mindful Caregiver: Finding Ease in the Caregiving Journey

Tips for Visiting Your Loved One with Dementia If your loved one has dementia, your visits may be different than ones you’ve had in the past, but they can still be filled with love and be satisfying for both of you.

1. Sit so you can easily connect with them Stand or sit so you are at eye level and they can see your face. Smile and make eye contact.

2. Keep conversation and questions positive and simple Offer short and simple sentences and questions, perhaps speaking at a slower pace.

3. Hold a hand Holding their hand or putting your hand on their arm or shoulder may be relaxing and calming.

4. Help them remember Use pictures, a photo album, recorded music or things they used in former hobbies or work to reminisce together.

5. Be patient Give them time to find the words they want to use and don’t correct them if it comes out all wrong. Just relax and wait for them to finish. If they are hearing impaired, speak loudly.

6. Look and listen Their feelings may be different than what they actually say. Sometimes they say no when they might mean yes. Watch for clues in facial expressions, body movements and gestures. Are they in pain, feeling sad, worried or agitated? Using pictures may help. If they become frustrated with this, you may try to distract their attention to something else to talk about or look at.

8. Be comfortable with silence Words are not always needed. Sometimes too much conversation can be tiring. Sitting in silence with someone you love can be relaxing and comforting. If the silence is too much for you, put on some of their favorite music and listen to it together. However, holding hands or stroking their arm in silence as you sit together may be just what they need as they feel your love and acceptance.

- Adapted from “How to talk to someone with dementia” by Kate Corr, unforgettable, March 19. 2019.
