FRIENDLIES SOCIETIES (WESTERN AUSTRALIA) Friendly Societies were benevolent fraternal organizations, based around local lodges for the purpose of providing altruistic social and charitable services. Some societies were formed along religious or political lines, often splitting or breaking away from the main body on differences of belief, so tracing the history of some groups can be difficult. Society lodges often formed agreements whereby a member moving away from home could enter a lodge in their new home without serving a probation time and initiation ceremony.
