• Born in Rocken, Saxony on October 15, 1844.

• Family had a long history in the church.

• Father died in 1849.

• Attended school at Schulpforta- an elite school of only 200 students.

• Formed a close friendship with composer Richard Wagner.

• Suffered most of his life with headaches and myopia.

• Suffered a mental breakdown in 1889.

• Died on August 25, 1900.
