KEENELANDSEPTEMBERYearling Sale
Sept. 8-11 ! 12 p.m. 13-21st ! 10 a.m.
MT. BRILLIANT BRINGS INTERNATIONAL FLAIRby Jessica Martini Greg
Goodman=s Lexington-based Mt. Brilliant Farmwill offer eight
yearlings during Book 1 of next week=sKeeneland September Yearling
Sale. The octet, split
between theGainesway andLane=s Endconsignments,has a
decidedlyEuropean flair. Two of theyearlings are outof
maresGoodmanpurchased at theTattersallsDecember sale,while the
stallions represented include Sea the Stars (Ire), FastnetRock
(Aus), High Chaparral (Ire) and Galileo (Ire). AWe=ve been buying
mares here in America and alsoin Europe,@ Goodman said. AWe really
felt like therewere some great pedigrees over there and some
greathorses that we could breed over there for a few yearsand then
bring the mares back here and breed them toa few American
stallions. And we actually sent one ofour mares, Justenuffheart
(Broad Brush), over there tobreed to Galileo.@ Goodman=s name first
appeared on the docket atTattersalls in 2011, but he and his team
were alreadyfamiliar with the scene at the Newmarket auction. AWe
bought three mares at Tattersalls in 2011--wehad bought a few mares
privately over there, but thatwas the first time we had bought at
Tattersalls,@Goodman confirmed. AWe actually went to Tattersallsfor
the two years before that to try to get a feel for themarket. We
went over there, not planning on buyinganything, but just to get a
feel for how things work.@ Goodman said he had found more
consistency whenbuying mares in Europe. AThey weren=t a lot cheaper
[in Europe], but theyweren=t scattered,@ Goodman explained. AIt
wasn=t like, here is one for $10 million and here is one for $5
million. It was more, $1 million, $1.5 million and $2
million.@Cont. p3
MUKHADRAM AN IRISH CHAMPION POSSIBLE Sheikh Hamdan bin Rashid Al
Maktoum=s G1 EclipseS. victor Mukhadram (GB) (Shamardal), who had
beenmooted as a possible for the Oct. 18 G1 Caulfield Cup,will not
ship to Australia and instead point to the Sept. 13 G1 Irish
Champion S. at Leopardstown. ATheplan is to take Mukhadram to
Ireland,@ racing managerAngus Gold told Racing Post. ASheikh Hamdan
didn=twant to go to Australia as he wanted him to finish hiscareer
in Europe. Providing all is well, the plan afterIreland will be to
have another crack at the [Oct. 18G1] Champion S. at Ascot.@
Trainer William Haggasadded, ASheikh Hamdan is conscious Mukhadram
hashad a few hard races this summer, but if I=m happywith the horse
in the run-up to Ireland he=ll run there.@

Mt. Brilliant brings Intn’l Flair..KeeSep cont from p1 Asked if
he found more mares in his price range inEurope, Goodman added,
ANot necessarily more tochoose from, maybe a little less
competition. So lessmoney, but more in the range. When you got on
ahorse, you knew what you were going to have to payfor it. You knew
that you weren=t going to be wastingyour time. You could figure out
what they were wortheasier. Not that they were that much cheaper,
it=s justthat they were more consistent.@ Among those initial
purchases from 2011 was DressUniform (Red Ransom), a full-sister to
G1 Epsom Oakswinner Casual Look. In foal to Invincible Spirit
(Ire), Mt.Brilliant acquired the mare for 360,000gns ($586,278).She
foaled a filly by Invincible Spirit in 2012 and wasbred back to Sea
the Stars. The resulting filly, one ofonly two by Sea the Stars in
the catalogue, will sellnext Thursday through the Gaineseway
consignment aship 598. Goodman returned to Tattersalls in 2012 to
obtainDesert Classic (Green Desert) for 875,000gns
($1,479,004).The mare soldcarrying a full-sibling to Wrote(Ire)
(HighChaparral {Ire}),who onlymonths beforehad won the GI Breeders=
CupJuvenile Turf.That HighChaparral coltsells through
Lane=s End as hip 576. Farm manager Jody Alexander said the team
targetedseveral things when picking out European mares for Mt.
Brilliant=s commercial broodmare band. AWe look for maybe a little
bit stronger bodied marethan some of the European mares might
have,@Alexander explained. AI don=t mean that in a negativeway, but
if we bring them back and start breeding themhere, we want a foal
out of those that are going to beappealing to American buyers and
not just theEuropeans.@ Pedigree updates like Wrote=s Breeders= Cup
victoryalso help. AWe knew some of the offspring out of those
familieswere racing here in the States,@ Alexander offered. ASowe
thought people would be more aware of them. Thatmade mares more
appealing to us because we figured ifwe brought the mare to the
States, people would bemore familiar with the family.@ Goodman
added, AWe are looking for mares thatwould work with American
stallions, as well asEuropean stallions. We=re looking for body
types thatwill fit in America.@ He continued, AThey have a little
more of the distancepedigrees over there, so we could breed some of
thespeed from here into them.@
While the issue of raceday medication looms largeover the
American breeding industry, Goodmanadmitted there was an additional
benefit to offeringyearlings by mares who were bred and raced in
Europe. AThis is my personal opinion, but I do believe that wehave
to change our rules on medication,@ Goodmansaid. AWe have to have
uniform rules. People talk aboutthe United States having uniform
rules. I think our rulesneed to be uniform with the rest of the
world. And I dothink that having some mares that didn=t race on
Lasixand having their progeny is definitely an advantage. Itwas
part of the thought process [of buying in Europe],not the whole
thought process, but part of it.@ Also included in Mt. Brilliant=s
September offerings iship 268, a daughter of Fastnet Rock (Aus).
The yearlingis the first foal out of So Stylish (Johannesburg),
anIrish stakes-placed three-quarter sister to multiple Group1
winner One Cool Cat (Storm Cat). She will beconsigned by Lane=s
End. On behalf of Mt. Brilliant,Lane=s End will also offer hip 747.
The yearling is anIrish-bred colt by Galileo (Ire) out of the
lateJustenuffheart (Broad Brush), dam of championDreaming of Anna
(Rahy) and multiple graded stakeswinners Lewis Michael (Rahy) and
Justenuffhumor(Distorted Humor). Justenuffheart was sent to
Ireland, where she foaled a Distorted Humor colt in 2011 andGalileo
colts in 2012 and 2013.

KeeSep Preview cont. from p3 With a broodmare band of 33 head,
Mt. Brilliantcurrently has five broodmares in Europe. AWe brought
several of them back here,@ Goodmancommented. ABut we have four in
Ireland and one inEngland. I think we=ll keep them in both places.
Ourintention is to leave some there and bring some backhere.@
Goodman is also looking to expand his shoppingsprees to the
Southern Hemisphere. AWe actually even tried Australia this year,@
herevealed. AWe had a mare picked out and she got sickat the sale,
so we ended up not bidding on her. But Ithink we will definitely go
back again.@ Mt. Brilliant, which has about a dozen horses
intraining in the U.S., also has four racing in Europe andsix in
Argentina. The farm will also be represented atthe Tattersalls
October sale. AWe are actually selling two yearlings in Europe
thisyear at Tattersalls,@ Goodman said. AWe are selling aGalileo
out of our mare Famous (Ire) (Danehill Dancer{Ire}) [lot 287A], who
is a full-sister to Mastercraftsman(Ire). And we=re selling a Pour
Moi (Ire) colt out of O= Bella Ballerina (Fusaichi Pegasus) [lot
429].@ Mt. Brilliant will be selling for its second year
atTattersalls. Goodman said, AWe gave it an attempt last year,
butit didn=t end very successfully--I do think you have tomaybe
build up a reputation there. We offered threeyearlings last year
and sold one of them and kept twoof them. But both of them that we
kept, we wereinterested in keeping.@ Goodman said early feedback on
the KeenelandSeptember yearlings has been positive. AI will know
better next week,@ he laughed whenasked how the stock has been
received. AI am hopingthey all sell and they all sell for a lot of
money. Thepeople that have been to the farm to look at them, Ithink
have all been pleased. We=ve actually talked to alot of people. We
thought really long and hard aboutwhether we should send these
horses back to Europeto sell or if we should leave them here and
sell themhere. After talking to enough people, we made thedecision
that we were just as well off selling them hereas we would have
been there.@ Mt. Brilliant=s Book 1 contingent also contains
hip748, a full-brother to recent GIII Monmouth Oakswinner and J
“TDN Rising Star” J Cassatt (Tapit). The yearling, consigned by
Lane=s End, is out ofJustenufftime (Giant=s Causeway), a daughter
ofJustenuffheart. On behalf of Mt. Brilliant, Gaineswaywill offer
hip 99, a son of Tapit out of GISP Morena(Per) (Privately Held);
hip 163, a filly by Bernardini outof stakes winner Private Gift
(Unbridled); and hip 239, aWar Front filly out of Shades of Grace
(Seeking theGold). The Keeneland September sale begins
Monday.Sessions Monday through Thursday begin at noon. After a dark
day Friday, the sale resumes Saturday at10 a.m.

to get to them, but in fairness to her shebattled well and stuck

in the G3 Solario S. at Sandown, added, AShe=sthe most willing

thing that springs to mind isthat she has earned enough to buy a
plane ticketsomewhere and my only concern is that she is
juststarting to change her coat. If she doesn=t stay in topshape
this autumn, there is a 3-year-old sprint programnext year which is
tailor-made for her. She might getseven furlongs and has range and
scope.@

A STAR, BY ANY OTHER NAME... Much conversation ensued in the TDN
offices afterthe impressive victory of American Pharoah
(Pioneerofthe Nile) in the GI Del Mar Futurity Wednesday (clickhere
for the TDN story). The ridgling broke his maidenin the Grade I
race, raising the question: could we namehim a J “TDN Rising Star”
J, or through virtue ofthe Grade I win in question, wasn=t he
already one? The question caused us to re-examine our Rising
Starcriteria, and we now specifically state on the TDNwebsite that
Rising Stars are horses winning a maiden, allowance or listed stakes
race who we feel will go onto win a graded stakes race. The Rising
Stardetermination is made in their first, second or thirdstart. We
appreciate how popular the program hasbecome, and particularly
enjoy seeing farms advertiseRising Stars for their stallions. But
if your horse isbreaking his maiden in a Grade I, you don=t need us
totell the world he=s a star. Just like you, they alreadyknow. (To
visit the Rising Stars page on the TDNwebsite, complete with race
writeups, charts, pedigreesand videos, click here.)

West Virginia Circuit Court Rules in Favor of Jockeys:Edited
Press Release The Hon. Paul Zakaib Jr. of the Circuit Court
ofKanawha County issued a ruling Aug. 29 in favor ofseven jockeys,
reversing and remanding the decision ofthe West Virginia Racing
Commission=s Ordersuspending and fining the jockeys. The case,
whichinitially began in March of 2009 at Hollywood Casino atCharles
Town Races, has been decided in favor of LuisPerez, Anthony Mawing,
Dale Whitaker, LawrenceReynolds, Jesus Sanchez, Alexis Rios-Conde
and TonyMaragh. The Court held that the Commission=s finalorder
constituted Aunlawful rulemaking retroactivelyapplied@ and the
record was insufficient to support thefindings of the
Commission.
The case began when seven jockeys at the CharlesTown Racetrack
were allegedly caught failing to weighout properly, referring to
the jockeys stepping on thescales, before going out to race, to
insure that theirweight matches the weight assigned to the horse
theyare riding. On April 8, 2009, only these seven jockeyswere
summarily suspended by the Racing Commission, even though all other
jockeys engaged in the sameprocedures when weighing out on the days
in question.PNGI proceeded to exclude these jockeys from
theracetrack Apr.14, 2009. After a lengthy factual hearing and
legal proceeding, the Commission suspended the jockeys for 30 days
andfined them each $1,000. However, based on thearbitrary
application of the rules by the Commission, under the advice of the
Jockeys= Guild and counsel, thejockeys appealed the decision to the
Circuit Court. The jockeys were represented and the case was
triedby Charleston, West Virginia lawyers Benjamin L. Baileyand
Christopher S. Morris of Bailey & Glasser. Baileysaid, AWe
could not be happier for our brave clients. This decision
vindicates their character andsportsmanship. Their long saga will
benefit the entireracing community in West Virginia, setting
thestandards and procedures to be applied to racinglicensees.@ AWe
are pleased with the Court=s decision,@ said TerryMeyocks, National
Manager of the Guild. AThe ridershave had to fight a tremendous
battle and have hadtheir reputations called into question.@ Cont.

West Virginia note cont. Meyocks continued, AWe hope that this
decision willset the record straight and it will be recognized
thatnone of the jockeys violated the rules of racing, nor didthey
do anything that would be considered illegal ordefrauding the

circumstances of the casearose, the Guild has worked closely with

NYS Gaming Comm to Issue 10-year Suspensions forCobalt
Violations Edited Press Release The New York State Gaming
Commission will issue astandard 10-year suspension to anyone who
violatesthe harness rule prohibiting the use of substances
thatabnormally oxygenate a horse=s blood, includingsupra-dietary
administration of cobalt salts. Cobalt salts have a number of
industrial and agricultural uses, butare not intended for
administration to horses. The Commission is considering a similar
rule forThoroughbred racing. The harness rule went into effectlast
month. AThe Commission will not allow those seeking tocheat to
undercut New York=s world-class racingprogram,@ said Commission
Executive Director RobertWilliams. AWe take seriously any practices
thatcompromise the health and safety of racehorses. EquineMedical
Director Scott Palmer and the New York DrugTesting and Research
Laboratory have instituted acomprehensive program to identify
violations and willcontinue to vigilantly advocate for the horse
and thepublic.@ Cobalt, a naturally-occurring element with
propertiessimilar to those of iron and nickel, is found in low
levelsin many horse feeds and vitamin supplements such asVitamin
B12 formulations. Low levels of cobalt arepresent in all horses and
are not considered to beharmful. Large doses can cause cobalt
toxicityassociated with myocardial and other organ pathologyin
humans and other animals. The detection ofabnormally high levels of
cobalt in the blood ofracehorses results from cobalt being
administered toimpermissibly enhance aerobic performance
throughillicit blood doping, similar to the
prohibitedadministration of erythropoietin (EPO). Administrationof
cobalt salts by oral or intravenous treatment willcause an abnormal
increase in serum cobalt levels thatthe New York Drug Testing and
Research Laboratorycan detect and is actively monitoring. To
enhance theefficacy of this new program, the Commission is
notcurrently publishing the laboratory threshold for cobalt.
The Commission=s rule prohibits only thesupra-dietary
administration of cobalt. Theadministration of feed supplements and
vitaminscontaining cobalt will increase the serum level of cobaltto
a degree consistent with oral supplementation, butwill not create
the abnormally high levels that resultfrom the administration of
cobalt salts. Oraladministration of commercially available Vitamin
B feedsupplements cannot elevate serum cobalt to a level thatwill
create a positive regulatory finding. Water-solublecobalt salts,
however, deliver a supra-dietary dose ofcobalt. Such
administrations induce a marked andstable polycythemic response
(increase in theoxygen-carrying capacity of the blood) through a
moreefficient transcription of the erythropoietin gene.
