Local Activities Bat Watching at Congress Avenue Bridge Austin is known for its large Mexican Free-Tailed Bat population. The best time to watch the bats is around sunset. This nightly show can take place anywhere from 7:30 – 9:45 p.m. It can take up to 45 minutes for all the bats to exit the bridge for the night. Arrive early to find parking and find the best bat viewing spot. Barton Creek Greenbelt The Barton Creek Greenbelt travels through south Austin, showcasing the unique beauty of Barton Creek. This trail is ideal for hiking, bird watching and more. No reservations are required, but check the website austinparks.org/barton-creek-greenbelt before visiting to view trail access points.
