• DO NOW: Highlight or circle the words ACT NOW on your handout. Read the required activities for today’s class activity.

• HOMEWORK: Complete and Study Review

• AIMS:– The Learner Will Understand the nature of science and demonstrate an

ability to practice scientific reasoning by applying it to final exam review exercises. (HSSCEs: P1 and P2: Inquiry, Reflection, and Social Implications)

Handout

Your Homework:

1. Draw a wave and label its parts.2. Compare frequency and wavelength using a

double-bubble thinking map.3. Give an example of a direct relationship.4. Explain how bats sense insects’ locations.5. Define and give an example of a MEDIUM.

What kind of wave does not require a MEDIUM? Give several examples of this.

• Amber notices that she sweats a lot when she runs fast. When she walks fast, she sweats a little, and when she walks, she is a little bit warm. Amber also notices that she feels cold when she is not moving. Just for fun, she creates a data table and graph.

A bat uses sonar to “sense” an insect. The bat uses the echo from a high frequency wave to locate objects.

A WAVE REFLECTS (BOUNCES) OFF OF A SOLID SURFACE:

ACT NOW.

• You are going to “be a bat” with sonar:• Touch your nose.• Quickly bring that finger to touch the tabletop

nearest to you.• Bring that finger back to touch your nose at

the same FAST speed.

• You just modeled HIGH FREQUENCY sonar.

Can we HEAR sound in space?

Page 16: Friday, March 4, 2011 Integrated Science B Final Exam Review Brain-Based Emphasis Inkster High School Mrs. Gall.

NO.

Sound requires a MEDIUM – matter- to move.Atoms bump each other like dominoes…

Page 17: Friday, March 4, 2011 Integrated Science B Final Exam Review Brain-Based Emphasis Inkster High School Mrs. Gall.

MEDIUM: matter through which the energy of the wave moves

Page 18: Friday, March 4, 2011 Integrated Science B Final Exam Review Brain-Based Emphasis Inkster High School Mrs. Gall.

Can we SEE light in space?

Page 19: Friday, March 4, 2011 Integrated Science B Final Exam Review Brain-Based Emphasis Inkster High School Mrs. Gall.

YES. We can see our sun and the stars.

Page 20: Friday, March 4, 2011 Integrated Science B Final Exam Review Brain-Based Emphasis Inkster High School Mrs. Gall.

If it doesn’t require a MEDIUM…

Then it must be an “electromagnetic wave”:LightRadioInfraredUltraviolet

Again…..Organic – remember the phrase

CHOw down.C = CarbonH = HydrogenO = Oxygen

Organic: means it has Carbon (C), Hydrogen (H), and Oxygen (O)

CHOw down!

• Today’s lesson is a continuation of Friday’s brain-based, interactive review activities. We will again use an emphasis on visual, sensory, and social approaches. There will be a greater emphasis on student synthesis of ideas to create catchphrases and artwork (posters). For example, we have used the catchphrase “CHOw down” to reinforce the idea that things that can eat or be eaten are organic, and are composed of Carbon, Hydrogen, and Oxygen (as well as other elements.) Students will have the opportunity to create catchphrases and posters to reinforce concepts about: conservation of mass and energy; simple and complex machines; and electricity and magnetism. (AIM: The Learner Will understand the nature of science and demonstrate an ability to practice scientific reasoning by applying it to the review lesson. HSSCEs: P1 and P2)

Law of Conservation of Mass and Energy

• Energy cannot be created or destroyed• E = mc2

6 Simple Machines

• Change the direction or distance over which work is done

• Inclined plane• Lever• Screw• Wedge• Pulley• Wheel and axle

Page 29: Friday, March 4, 2011 Integrated Science B Final Exam Review Brain-Based Emphasis Inkster High School Mrs. Gall.

Inclined Plane

• Work = force x distance• Lift the box: force = 10 N; distance = 10 m• Work = 100 Joules

Page 30: Friday, March 4, 2011 Integrated Science B Final Exam Review Brain-Based Emphasis Inkster High School Mrs. Gall.

Inclined Plane• Work = 100 Joules• Slide the box• The work is greater: the box slides against the

direction of motion. FRICTION opposes the direction of the work and increases the work.

Page 31: Friday, March 4, 2011 Integrated Science B Final Exam Review Brain-Based Emphasis Inkster High School Mrs. Gall.

Inclined PlaneThe work is spread over a longer distance. If the total work is 120 Joules, but it is pushed over a distance, the work is spread out too. Here, the person pushes upward (120/ 5 = 24) with a force of 24 JoulesAt each interval. He’ll Push farther, but can lift The box even If he’s weak.

Inclined Plane

All simple machines change the force and/ or distance of the work that is done.
