104 FRIDAY, February 24, 2017 The Principal, College of Humanities and Social Sciences to present the following for the Conferment of the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy (Sociology) EJANG Mary (Ms) Social Networks, Gender and Ru- ral Livelihood Patterns in Post- conflict Uganda Ms. Ejang Mary investigated the impact of displacement on social networks, gender and rural livelihoods among internally displaced persons in northern Uganda. She established that before displacement, the communities had strong attachment through kinship relations called doggola. The kinship network and informal social activities promoted means of living and were the basis for community trust, cooperation and reciprocation. The conditions in camps weakened the strong social attachments due to broken bond and individualistic survival means that contributed to new forms of economic livelihoods and group dynamics with women assuming men’s roles. Therefore, post-war reconstruction programme should integrate social relations and gender components for sustainable livelihoods. This study was funded by the Sida-Makerere Bilateral Research Corporation, and supervised by Assoc. Prof. Andrew Ellias State and Prof. Charles Rwabukwali. Conferment of the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy (Literature) GULERE Wambi Cornelius Riddles and riddle discourse in Lusoga language and culture: a performance centered approach Mr. Gulere Wambi studied riddling and found that riddles were a form and style of socialization that used symbols in consensus building and collective knowledge creation. Riddle acts refreshed the people’s power of observation, critical thinking, reasoning, insight, teamwork, and raised their quality of interaction, confirming that riddles were important forms of literature that delighted and taught many people. And that, riddling made coded words, gestures, and ordinary dress more meaningful in conversations. He defined the seven moves in riddling as; Antecedent, Precedent, Unraveling, Crowning, Declamation, Affirmation and Agreement; and established 14 performance patterns with some or all these moves. He proved further that, for proper meaning-making and re-performance, an artistic written record of a riddle act should be inclusive of audience, context, verbal and non-verbal texts in their sequence of performance. This study was funded by Mak-NUFU Folklore Linkage Project and African Humanities Program / American Council of Learned Societies (AHP/ ACLS), and supervised by Dr. Benge Okot and Dr. Susan Nalugwa Kiguli. Conferment of the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy (Social Studies) OCEN Laury Lawrence Reading monuments: the politics and poetics of memory in postwar Northern Uganda Mr. Ocen Laury Lawrence’s thesis examined how the agency of public war monuments in postwar northern Uganda re-imagines the different sites that they occupy. While these monuments transform their locations, this project shows that they also carry potential risks of perpetuating a systemic crisis of memory. He has innovatively illuminated the phenomenological possibilities that reading a monument offers, when it is read multifariously as object, text, and art; which departs from the dominant discourses that simply look at monuments as artifacts representing spectacular events of war. Ocen’s engagement of literary theory elucidates formalistic connections between literary works and material arts, an experimental move that promises to build epistemological synergies that expand, rather than constrict methodology in the social sciences. This study was funded under Makerere Institute of Social Research Interdisciplinary PhD and M/Phil in Social Studies, and was supervised by Assoc. Prof. Ernest Okello-Ogwang and Dr. Florence Ebila. Conferment of the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy (Sociology) KWIRINGIRA Nkiriyehe Japheth Learning from community-led to- tal sanitation (CLTS) for improved shared latrine use and main- tenance: the case of Kampala slums, Uganda Mr. Kwiringira set out to develop strategies for improved shared latrine use, cleaning and maintenance in slums. Previous sanitation interventions focused on sanitation infrastructure and not maintenance. The most effective way to keep slum shared latrines clean and usable is; in the short run, for local authorities to involve house owners and landlords and in the long run to tackle extreme poverty in slums. For better outcomes, the two approaches ought to go hand in hand. Dr. Kwiringira’s work will benefit urban planners and managers especially at Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) and public health practionners as they tackle slum upgrading and infectious diseases resulting from poor sanitation and hygiene respectively. The relationship between law and gender relations in land decision-making processes, using a case study of Ibanda Town Council, in Western Uganda
mr. godard busingye examined the relationship between law and gender relations in land decision-making processes, using a case study of ibanda Town council, Western uganda. To suggest ways of addressing the problem of low level of effective women participation in land decision-making processes, the study identified the family, clan, and culture as some of the arenas of the ideology of patriarchy that promote gender discrimination, women exclusion, oppression and subjectivation. it identified constraints to women’s access, ownership, control and use of land and identified avenues such as engaging in business, resisting the practice of widow inheritance, and engaging in politics as some of the ways through which the ideology of patriarchy can be weakened. This study was self-funded and also supported by christian university, and supervised by Prof. Joe oloka-onyango and Prof. sylvia Tamale.
