During the evening, not only did Olson discuss the many, many wonderful desserts in her latest cookbook Another Cup of Sugar as well as useful tips and tricks, but everyone also got to enjoy lemon pound cake, toffee squares, cookies and cream brownies, pine nut biscotti, shortbread and apple sauce cake. Olson is the host of the television shows Sugar and Kitchen Equipped on the Food Network. Events like these are part of the Oakville Library’s goal of providing interesting adult programs in the community. Attendees found the event both entertaining and applicable to their own lives. “Absolutely perfect! Interesting and inspirational; incredibly enthusiastic about her work. Great event,” said Lorna Peaker. “Continuously entertaining and informative,” said Rina Maini. “I enjoyed the question and answer period. I will be using her tips the next time I bake,” added Stephanie Kaech. “I enjoyed finding out about behind the scenes. I can’t wait to try out some of the cooking tips she shared,” said Christine Szklar. “She was very witty and funny,” said Heather Kress. Similar to her TV shows, Olson likes to focus her desserts around a themed ingre- dient. Each theme in the new book is paired with one simple recipe, which is fast and easy to follow, and a more elaborate dessert that’s great for impressing dinner guests. Olson joined Food Network Canada after an appetizing seven-year experience as pastry chef at Inn on the Twenty in Jordan, Ontario, where she met her hus- band, Chef Michael Olson. In addition to co-authoring the cook- book, The Inn on the Twenty Cookbook together in 2000, the pair also own and operate Olson Foods and Bakery, located in the heart of Port Dalhousie, Ontario. Now that February’s month of sweet indulgences has past, it’s time to get your diet back on track. Did you know March is Nutrition Month? The library has new books and cookbooks about nutrition and eating healthy. The following books are just a few of the items in this category that will be available soon for borrowing: The Portion Plan: how to eat the foods you love and still lose weight, by Linda Gassenheimer. Nutrition Almanac, by John D. Kirschmann. Prevent and Reverse Heart Disease : the revolutionary, scientifically proven nutri- tion-based cure, by Caldwell B. Esselstyn. Superfoods: nutrient-dense foods to protect your health, by Michael van Straten. The Best Life Diet, by Bob Greene, with a foreword by Oprah Winfrey. More events will take place this spring, including a Green Gardening Day event and a seminar on how to start your own export business — the first of a series of business events in partnership with Halton Region.
