School website: www.garfield.enfield.sch.uk Headteachers Message Welcome to our third edition of our Community Flyer and a big thank you to all those staff, parents and pupils who contributed to it this week. Please do keep your photographs, stories, articles, poems and news coming. As you can read this week, there are lots of ideas and opportunities for you to get involved in and these include an exciting Maths competition and activities to commemorate next week's V.E. bank holiday on Friday 8th May. As we have had such fantastic feedback from you about our new flyer, we are going to aim to get an edition out to you every week. As next Friday is a bank holiday, the flyer will go out on Thursday. This means everyone will need to send in any articles or photos by Wednesday 6th May please. I know that many parents have found the online home learning activities very helpful, however we know that this is not working well for some, for lots of good reasons. Over the next week or so, we are working on further improving and extending the ways home learning can happen. We want to support each parent and pupil to do what works best for you. This will include emailing some parents to see what would work better which might include you wanting more paper packs for your child or children. Through all of this, we know everyone is doing the best they can under difficult circumstances, so please know we will not be putting pressure on anyone to do more than they can. It is important that you understand that due to many real issues around E-safety and safeguarding, like the majority of schools, we are not providing live online lessons with our teachers. We have provided home learning opportunities each week since the closure and this included initially paper packs and then a weekly class message from the teacher and new learning activities for the week which go on our website every Monday at the end of the day. We will send parents a text each week to remind you of this. Our website will continue to be updated and Mr Newson (Asst Head responsible for parent partnership) will be leading the sections for parents. Please do call into school or email into the school office if you have any queries or worries. We are here to help and can then direct you to the relevant staff member or outside service as appropriate. I want to finish my message this week by saying again, how much I and all the staff miss you. When I am in school now, it is not the same. It is the people in a school that makes the school come alive. It is so quiet - I miss hearing the voices, the laughter, the singing. We will be together again but only when it is safe to do so. We must continue to follow the current government guidelines in order to stay safe. For now, please enjoy our latest edition, hopefully it will make you smile and remember you are a valued member of our very special school community. Let’s celebrate V.E.75 Day together!

Next Friday 8th May 2020 is a special day to remember. Why? Britain will be commemorating the

75th anniversary of V.E. Day when the guns fell silent at the end of WW2 in Europe. This is a

chance to remember and say, “For those who gave so much, we thank you.”

Our veterans and soldiers are now helping us and supporting the NHS in the battle against the

coronavirus. They are still risking their lives or providing amazing inspiration as the 100 years-old hero Captain Tom has done through fundraising for

the NHS. So what can we do to show our support and thanks next Friday? We’d like you to make bunting or a

poster to display to celebrate V.E.75 Day. Please take pictures and send them to our school. There is an excellent website to give you lots of ideas at bbc.co.uk/makeadifference.Thank you.

Mrs Walton

Once upon a time, there was a little boy called Jonah. He was enjoying the summer holidays as the weather had been so beautiful. The sun shone for what seemed like forever and the skies were such a clear blue, like the sea on the beach that Jonah and his family had visited on his last summer holidays the previous year. One evening, Jonah planned with two of his best friends to meet at the park on their bikes the following day and he went to bed that evening feeling happy about the adventures they would go on with their bikes. He smiled as he fell asleep and hoped his dreams would be filled of treasures that they would discover on their journey. The next morning, Jonah began to wake. He stretched out his arms, yawned and slowly began to open his eyes. His bedroom seemed much darker than usual and the sound of tapping came from the corner of his room where his window was. Surprised, Jonah quickly jumped from his bed and ran to his window to look outside. It was raining! Jonah noticed the rain was really heavy and there was no sign of the beautiful sun. Instead, the sky was covered in a blanket of dark clouds. Jonah felt really sad as he knew he wouldn't be able to go on his adventure with his best friends that day. His big sister Maisie called out to him, "Jonah, it's breakfast time!" Jonah put on his favourite warm cotton jumper and went downstairs. Maisie was in the kitchen, sitting around the table. She had been looking after him most days while their parents were at work. "What's wrong Jonah? Why do you look so sad?" Maisie asked. "I'm feeling sad because I had planned to go to the park today with Aaron and Joshua on our bikes, but it's raining so much outside so I know I won't be able to go now," Jonah said, his voice sounding like he was about to cry. Maisie stood up from her chair and walked over to Jonah. "I know you’re feeling sad and disappointed about the weather Jonah and that you can't meet your friends today, but outside the rain is doing wonderful things to the earth. It's feeding the trees, flowers, the animals and it also helps provide us with nourishing water for us to drink," Maisie explained.

Jonah thought about what Maisie had said and began to feel better about things. He sat down and began to eat his cereal. Maisie sat down with him. "Anyway, we can do lots of fun things together today as I'm not able to meet my friends for a walk either. Maybe we could play a board game. You must always try to remember that it won't rain forever and that after the rain, the sun is sure to shine again," Maisie told Jonah. Jonah liked those words 'after the rain, the sun was sure to shine again'. Those words comforted him and his sadness felt like it was disappearing.

Jonah had fun that day playing board games with his sister Maisie and the next day, Jonah woke up to his bedroom looking much brighter and the warmth from the sun bursting through his window. He jumped out of bed and looked out his window. The trees looked much greener, the birds were singing a happy loud song and the world outside was waiting for Jonah and his friends to discover it. Jonah remembered the special words his sister had told him and he smiled and quietly said to himself, "After the rain, the sun is sure to shine again." :) The End Emily (EYA from Bumblebee Class)

MATHS POSTER COMPETITION

This week, a maths poster competition is being launched. This poster will be about how maths impacts on your daily lives and will show different examples of how you use your maths skills at home. This could include using measuring equipment to weigh ingredients to bake a cake, using written addition and subtraction when creating a shopping list with a budget or counting how many different coloured cars pass your window.

This competition begins on Monday 4th May and closes

on Friday 15th May and is open for pupils of all ages, from Nursery up to Year 6. You could design your poster on the computer or hand draw it on a piece of paper. Please attach your entries to an email (a word document or a pho-tograph of a hand drawn entry) and email them to [email protected],

A winner will be selected from each year group and these will be announced on the Garfield website on Monday

18th May, along with the winning entries. Be as creative and imaginative as you can! You can even get your family in-volved as well!

Good Luck! :)

Home Learning

It is important that every child continues to complete some schoolwork every school

day. The school would like to say a big thank you to all parents and other family members

who have been supporting their children with their work and also to the pupils themselves for all their efforts while learning in such different

circumstances. Home learning tasks and activities for every

class are updated weekly, every Monday, on the school website at: https://
