Here is Vidhi’s account of the day: When I went to De Montfort University we did a lot of activities. My favourite one was fine art and graphics. It is my favourite because we used many things and it was fun to learn new things. Most things we did were in groups and some things were individual. We went to the university to experience how it is to go there and how life at university is. We also met real students who go there and they told us many things about themselves and about how it feels. For me it was really fun and challenging. I felt so glad and excited as we stepped out of the bus. It was so nice to be there. I enjoyed the day so much and I really hope I get another chance to go with everyone and have some more fun and learn more new things. Art & Design degree taster day
On Monday 15th January, eight students went to DeMontfort University for an Art & Design Degree Taster day to experience first-hand what taking an Art degree could be like. The students experienced different creative activities in Graphics, Theatre production and Fine Art and got to meet a range of students and tutors from Loughborough, DeMontfort and Leicester
Universities.
The students enjoyed it, learned about why University courses are beneficial and found it a
valuable experience. Here is Vidhi’s account of the day:

Top A2L and most Improved students
Congratulations to the following students who have the best overall Attitude to
Learning scores and also to the students with the top Most Improved Attitude to Learning scores.
A large proportion of the homework that is set at Rushey Mead Academy will be work that is aimed at making students learn material by heart. This is essential
now that most GCSE subjects have exams at the end of the year 11, rather than controlled assessments during the course.
The best way to make sure that students do well in their exams, is to help them to learn material well as they go through the school, revisiting it regularly and checking that it is still secure in their memories. Every key piece of learning that they cover during their courses will need to be retained in their memories until the end of year 11. In most subjects this is true of material covered from
year 7 onwards.
5 Key Positive Learning Homework Habits
Learn material WELL when you first study it - so that you really understand it, and can remember it, not just so that you can
scrape through the test. This provides a strong basis for future revision.
The best way to learn material by heart is to split it up, and return to it, various times over a period of time - e.g. 3x 10
minutes spread over a week will be much more effective than 1 x 30 minutes.
The best method of learning involves testing yourself over and over again. - Do NOT just read, highlight or copy out material
- this is really not effective.
Make cue-cards as you go through the year, either paper or electronic (such as on Quizlet) - don't put off the chore for the end
of the year or the end of the course. Stay in control by doing it regularly in small chunks.
Return to old topics regularly and quickly test yourself to see how much you can remember. The act of re-visiting and re-testing
both identifies material that you need to work on AND pushes the material that you could remember even more securely into
your memory.
The more time you invest during the course, the better prepared you will be in the run-up to the exams - when you can concentrate on USING the material you have already learned to do past paper questions. Research has shown that the number of past
papers completed before an exam is a better indicator of their level of success than a student's IQ.
Careers News
Year 9 Options Evening – Tuesday 6th February
The Year 9 Options Evening was extremely well attended by Year 9 students and their parents. The main questions were about how GCSE choices will relate to college and career choices in the future. The options faculties were very well represented and there were some exciting displays offered by Art, Product Design, Photography and many others. In total, around 16 of the GCSE options were represented at the event and the faculty staff were on hand to inform and advise students and their parents to
enable them to make informed GCSE choices.
Mrs Conneally and the Careers team supported the faculty staff and provided information on BTEC Health & Social Care as well as colleges, courses and career information. The event went really well and the feedback of many who attended was that they felt
better informed about the choices that the students needed to make.
Year 11 Mock Interviews – Wednesday 7th February
The annual Year 11 mock interview event at Rushey Mead involved around 300 students getting the opportunity to experience an interview situation as near as possible to the type of interview that they will receive at the colleges.
Around 24 employers/business people gave up their valuable time to volunteer to interview Rushey Mead students and each student will receive written feedback to help them to further improve their performance at college interviews. Many students were extremely nervous and the Careers team was on hand to help them to calm their nerves. The feedback from students has been very positive and many of them now feel much more confident about
their upcoming college interviews.
Thank you to Gail at Leicestershire Cares for organising the volunteers on the day and to the volunteers for giving their time up to
support Rushey Mead students in this way.
Free enrichment opportunities & lunch menus
We have included in this newsletter a list of free clubs offered at Rushey Mead Academy. Please encourage your child to attend.
The list will be updated on a termly basis.
