Rosebery School Whitehorse Drive Epsom KT18 7NQ T.01372 720439 www.roseberyschool.co.uk @ RoseberySchool1 1 Friday 4 November 2016 Dear Parents and Carers, It has been lovely to speak with many of the Sixth Formers who enjoyed a wonderful week in New York and Washington over half term. I am very grateful to Mr Waight, Mr Harvey, Miss Nejad, Miss Lowe and Mr Styles for giving up their holiday to run such a fantastic trip. This is just one of the myriad of opportunities available in Year 12 and 13 that we highlighted at our very well attended Sixth Form Open Evening this week. This area is blessed with many excellent post-16 providers, but naturally we believe that the academic and enrichment experience on offer at Rosebery is second to none. As a result of their dedication and the personalised and relentless support from their teachers, our Sixth Form students thrive in a challenging but secure environment, they are terrific role models for our younger students, and become articulate, compassionate and empathetic young women capable of leading their local and wider community. Next week, the shortlisted Head Girl candidates pitch to their peers, and I am very excited about hearing their thoughts on how they will contribute to the Sixth Form and the school as a whole. In the light of my comments in last week’s newsletter relating to the school’s finances, I am even more grateful to the volunteers of the PSA who ran the very successful film night last Friday evening and to those parents who came in this week to begin preparations for the Christmas Fair which is now less than a month away. You will receive raffle tickets via your daughter and we very much hope that you will feel able to purchase these to support this, our biggest fundraiser of the year. Next Friday sees our annual Mufti Day and further details of items which we would like everyone to bring in to support the Fair can be found later in this newsletter. Thank you for all your support. Finally, can I draw your attention to the new Student Blog which is a fantastic addition to our Hub. It is written by the students, for the students, and we hope it will become an important means of communication and a celebration of all the ways our students make this such a vibrant and inspiring school to belong to. Have a lovely weekend. Ros Allen@RoseberyHT Blog: headteacherroseberyschool

Talisa Yorke 12D - I have recently released a song for my Grannie who has Cancer. It's called 'Prove It Wrong'. I am trying to raise funds for the Princess Alice Hospice & Macmillan Cancer Support, so if you could buy the song through iTunes or want to donate, please see the links at the bottom of this page. Read the story behind ‘Prove It Wrong’ In July 2015 my family were given the devastating news that my Grannie had terminal Cancer, with a prognosis of 12 months left to live.
I have always played the saxophone and taught myself guitar, so I decided to record my Grannies favourite songs onto a CD to listen to, whilst going through the gruelling sessions of Chemotherapy at the Marsden Hospital in Sutton.
Grannie is a fighter, my love & admiration for her is that she takes on all of life’s challenges - be that the early death of my granddad, to embracing technology with iPads, iPhones & emails, to which I have been her ICT support person.
This was the first time in our family that Cancer, or “Doris” as Grannie calls it, had touched my life. I was heartbroken. I wanted to convey my support and love to Grannie in the only way I knew how, by writing a song.
The song was originally called ‘You're a fighter’ and I gave it to Grannie in August 2015 to take to chemo sessions. Whilst we knew nothing could be done about the Cancer, we knew with Grannie’s strength, character and with our strong family behind her, she would beat the prognosis of 12 months.
Chemo was gruelling, side effects heart-breaking but not once did my Grannie falter - what an amazing inspiration to me, a 16 year old girl. I am and forever will be in awe of her.
Well, she did it!
It is now November 2016, Grannie is 70 (great party), I am nearly 17 (hopefully a great party) and Grannie is now happy to share her song & story. We have changed the title to ‘Prove It Wrong’ because she did, we are now 15 months and counting…
The song is available on iTunes £0.99 and Spotify where 60% of the proceeds are going to, Princess Alice Hospice in Esher & Macmillan Nurses; who are truly amazing. If you'd like to donate more to both of these fabulous causes then I have set up a just giving page for both, (see below).
If this song can help or inspire anyone else going through Cancer, either to beat it or prolong their prognosis, then both Grannie and I will feel truly happy.
You can take a look at my short promotional video on the link below. We would like to reach as many people as possible,
so if you could share this post with all your friends and family that would be great.
