LOVE OF WORK FAMILY SPIRIT IN THE WAY OF MARY SIMPLICITY PRESENCE

A Message from the Principal of Operations, Mr Burton Saunders AMENDED MAIN CARPARK PROTOCOL – NOVEMBER 2018

Dear Parents, Staff and Students,

Most of you are aware by now that Marist Brothers Linmeyer will be

starting our Capital Development Project – the High School Multi-purpose

Hall within a week or two.

Now that the contractor Pro Build (who built our Marcellin Block in 2016) has been officially

appointed, we can inform all persons who make use of the Main Carpark of the area the

contractor requires for his Building Materials, and site office.

Much consideration and discussion took place between Marist Brothers Linmeyer and the

Contractor to ensure that the minimum space could be made available to the building site,

without compromising the scope of work necessary for the project to move ahead smoothly.

Please view the plan below carefully and familiarize yourselves with the changes to the way in

which the traffic flow is indicated.

IMPORTANT POINTS TO NOTE:

1. This revised plan will be implemented from 1 November 2018, and will remain in effect until

the project is completed.

2. The first (North) High School gate in East Street will now only be for the contractors use.

3. Both High and Primary school parents will be expected to enter the second gate in East

Street (South) Primary School side.

4. High School parents will be expected to move over to the High School side as soon as the

carpark widens out beyond the contractors fencing. This route will be indicated with either

traffic cones or direction signs.

5. As a number of car parking bays have been lost due to the building yard enclosure we can

no longer accommodate the Matric students who have been parking inside the premises or

the “walking moms” who arrive early to leave their cars in the carpark while going out for a

walk.

6. Staff who have designated bays under the shade ports will continue to park in this area –

please do not pull into these bays to drop your children off, no matter how tempting - the

teacher could be two cars behind you waiting to enter their parking!

7. Double parking, parking on the Pedestrian crossing and taking up the “disabled” parking

areas is to be avoided and is not condoned.

8. An extra security guard is to be employed to assist with direction and traffic flow – please

do not abuse this person – he is there for everyone’s safety and well-being.

AND LASTLY:

Please be positive, patient and understanding – the improvement and additional facilities that

this new project will add to the whole campus will be worth it in the end.

Should any parent wish to contact me or the school on issues relating to carpark issues, please

feel free to do so during office hours by sending me an email at [email protected]

Thanking you once again for your patience and understanding related to this matter.

Yours sincerely,

B. Saunders T. Williams G. Norton

Principal – Operations Principal – Primary School Principal – High School

PRAYER FOR THE WEEK Lord Jesus, may I never doubt your guiding presence and your

merciful love towards me. Through the gift of your Spirit, fill me

with courage and persevering faith to trust you in all things and

in every circumstance I find myself. Give me the strength to cling to your promises when the world around me begins to

shake or crumble. When my love and zeal begin to waver, fan

into my heart a flame of consuming love and dedication for you

who are my All.

TECH-FREE BREAKS

As this year has progressed, we have noticed that introducing technology, namely iPads,

comes with some obvious pros as well as the few cons. The pros should outweigh the cons

but that depends on the “usage ethics” of our students. Like the technology use at home, we

need to enforce some downtime from the students’ screens.

We have introduced “tech-free breaks”. This means that students need to lock away their

iPads and start engaging with each other. Catch up face-to-face time, play some physical

games, have a conversation, take a walk and eat without staring at a screen; this promotes

our Family Spirit and Presence characteristics. Responsible usage of any technology is as an

important skill that we need to enforce while students are on our premises.

EISTEDDFOD RESULTS 2018 The Eisteddfod has once again, been very successful this year. The students took part in the

National Eisteddfod of South Africa, Alberton Eisteddfod, the Germiston Eisteddfod and the

Johannesburg Festival for Advancement of Music. They had to forfeit time in their August

holidays to participate in their events.

The Eisteddfod has grown from 79 entries in 2017 to 182 entries in 2018. I would also like to

congratulate the Matrics who, even though they had many other responsibilities, still made

HIGH SCHOOL SPORT

EQUESTRIAN Horse Riding for the Non-Horsey Parent:

Show Jumping is competitive precision riding over a set course of obstacles, which although

perhaps solid in appearance, are easily knocked down. Each knock or refusal incurs penalties,

which are marked against the competitor. The winner is the rider who can jump the course clear,

and then jump at least part of it again, raised and this time against the clock, to be clear and

faster than any other rider.

Savanna Moreira is a Grade 8 Equestrian Team Rider who

competes, with her horse Chewbacca, in the SANESA

Show Jumping Discipline. Savanna is new to the High

School Equestrian Team and recently competed with her

horse, Chewbacca, at the SANESA Newcomer’s

Challenge in the Level 1 60 cm class. The pair placed 4th.

Congratulations Savanna – we look forward to watching

you continue to ride with passion and confidence next

year.

The Marist Brothers Linmeyer Equestrian Team wants

you! If your child is horse-mad, we would like to

encourage you to speak to one of the MBL horse-mad

family and join us for the 2019 season!

SWIMMING Congratulations to Brad Gunther, Grade 11, who

competed in the Sun City Dischem Open Water

swims this weekend. Brad swam the 3km and

THERAPY CORNER

Ways to unify your parenting style Sometimes parents aren’t as divided as they seem. However, children are confused as there are six parents instead of two. The voices of four grandparents speaking through mom and dad. Therefore, it is important to examine your past and leave your baggage behind. This will enable you and your partner to make the right parenting decisions for your child without being influenced by your past. Instead of accusing each other of being too lenient or too strict, discuss the points of conflict between your parenting styles with specific concrete examples. Discuss your definition of maturity with your partner, this will help you to gain insight into what each of your goals are for your child’s future. This can be used to formulate a joint disciplinary mission with short term and long term goals. The disciplinary mission will help you to decided together on rules, rewards and penalties. Once this has been decided upon it is essential to agree never to disagree about discipline in front of the children. Lastly, just as we plan ahead for a five or ten- year business plan, we need to do the same for our children. Children go through different developmental levels and what works for a pre-schooler will not work for a teenager who has started smoking etc. Therefore, be proactive, plan ahead on how you are going to deal with certain situations as they get older, this will help you to be in control of the situation and prevent reactive decisions which often make the situation worse. In conclusion, keep the following in mind: In reality, our children are our legacy. One day they will become other people’s spouses, parents and grandparents. Healthy parenting develops healthy adults who actualise their purposes in life and develops healthy future relationships. Karen Joubert Educational Psychologist
