ROLL OF HONOUR OF THE EUROPEAN OPEN TOURNAMENTS

2003-2017

There have been eight tournaments in this series before Istanbul, and 779 medals have been handed out. The most successful nation in those events is, perhaps surprisingly, the Netherlands with 107 medals, 39 of them golds, also the record. Second on that list is France, with 91 medals and 31 tit-les. Players from a total of 17 nations have won European open titles, including the USA and China from outside of Europe. A total of 34 countries have contributed to the medallists, including players from Argentina and Bra-zil (zone 3), India (zone 4), China (zone 5), Australia (zone 7) and South Africa and Zimbabwe (zone 8). That only leaves zone 6. On the individual front, Sylvie Willard leads the pack with ten medals, ahead of Carla Arnolds and Wietske Van Zwol with nine. Catherine D'Ovidio and Marion Michielsen have eight medals, Bep Vriend has seven, which is also the total attained by Philippe Cronier, who is the most successful male player.

UPDATE AFTER THE ISTANBUL MIXED TEAMS

With 14 medals by French players (not counting Franck Multon, who officially represents Monaco), France has almost closed the gap in the nation count. They now have won 105 medals, just three less than the Netherlands.Meanwhile, Sylvie Willard has extended her lead in the individual count, having just won her eleventh medal.

Reess led 35:20 after the first session, and on Board 15 they took an extra overtrick. On 16 Reess went down in a part-score at both tables, but what was in store was much worse for them.

slam (and the {Q may be redundant), and every pair has at least one way of asking for those cards. Instead, after a pointless 4[ cue-bid, West had to do something. 4NT was alerted as an attempt to stop below slam, not a keycard ask. East no longer had an option to ask with 4NT, so she just closed the auction with 6]. Not a good contract, because if you wish to cater for a bad diamond break you have to play 6{, and if you make 6] after (the actual) club lead, you would also have made 7{, 7] and 7NT. In fact, 6] could go down due to a 5-1 trump break with 7NT and 7{ making. Actually, 6] made with an overtrick, but…

Here 2} was strong, 2] was either hearts or a strong balanced hand, 2[ was a relay and 3NT described a semi-balanced hand with hearts. 4{ was a natural slam try. It seems that Josephine's 5NT convention (or some version of asking for trump honours) is not popular in France. Instead, once again East started to cue-bid and poor West couldn't make any cue-bid in return. Impressed with his partner's persistence on diamonds, Bompis decided to go for a grand, and he was rewarded with a 2-2 diamond break. Making 7{ tied the score at 36:36.

On 18 North had to bid over a 1{ opening with a flat 18 count including 10842 in diamonds. Overcalling 1NT would have described the strength perfectly, and partner would have passed with 5 HCP. Instead both players were worried about the lack of a diamond stopper. They doubled and after a 1]/1[ response they had to bid 1NT, showing 19-20. As a result, both N/S pairs overbid. Soulet went two down in 3NT, while Krasnosselski exploited a defensive error to make 2NT, endplaying the opener. Good Six took the lead 44:36. Next board they conceded 5 IMPs when Bompis-D'Ovidio made a very optimistic 4[ contract, and then...

This is one of those situations where disasters may happen, unless the partnership has clear rules about which doubles are for takeout and which are for penalty. All I can say is that a 3] bid by West might have been less risky. Of course, East might have a hand with four good clubs and a heart singleton, but you can't win them all.

To make matters worse, every finesse was on for declarer in 3} doubled. Frey led [K (the only way to prevent a second overtrick, provided they later cash ]A). Declarer won and continued spades. Eventually he finessed trumps successfully and even managed to discard a losing heart on dummy's diamonds for a whopping +1070.

At the replay, West showed her hearts at the earliest opportunity with a multi 2{ opening. The 4} response asks opener to transfer into her long suit. At this point Soulet ventured a phantom sacrifice, but he was not that far from making 5}! Bompis led a natural [K and this time the defenders took all their tricks for +200 and 15 IMPs to Good Six.

North didn't open with a decent 13-count. In bygone eras some theorists argued for passing such hands, but nowadays one would pass only if desperate to create a swing or just miscounting HCP. I would assume the latter, which might happen when you have to play five days in a row without respite. The five-handed Reess team had performed excellently up to this session, but North's unfortunate pass allowed East to show 18-19 (instead of 15-18), so the game was bid and six more IMPs went away. More damage was around the corner…

Mikhail Krasnosselski could have beaten this contract at trick one with a small club lead, but he respected declarer's 2} bid and led a passive heart. His choice of ]7 indicated a poor suit, and when declarer gave up the lead in spades, his partner switched correctly to }K – two down.

Of course, West was at fault. A fourth-suit forcing bid of 2] could do no harm and then he would have discovered East's 6-4 shape.

Playing Two-over-One, West could also afford a 2NT waiting bid to find out more about his partner's hand. Three Hearts was probably a transfer to spades (a treatment suggested by Martens in one of his books).

Good Six extended the lead to 103:44 on Board 26 when D'Ovidio, holding Q6 in trumps, led her doubleton rather than the suit bid by her partner. She was rewarded with a trump promotion after finding AK in her partner's hand.

Two Clubs was forcing. In my opinion, 4[ shows a poor hand with excellent long trumps, just a little too good for a preempt (this is the standard treatment of a 4[ rebid in an uncontested Two-over–One auction). With a better hand West could jump to 3[ or cuebid 2{. Evidently, Bompis expected more. His 5[ bid asks partner to bid slam with a diamond control. D'Ovidio dutifully cooperated, but there were too many holes in hearts and clubs as well. A successful heart finesse through a hand marked with 0-2 HCP was too big an ask, and one down was -11 consolation IMPs to Reess.

After a monstrous second session Good Six had taken the lead from Reess by 103-55. Not an insurmountable lead but Reess would need a good third session, not only to bring them closer, but to have momentum for the final session. Some swingy boards would also be a help, not only for Reess but for this tired scribe.

As usual, you can't always get what you want. The Great Shuffler did not appear to consider this poor mortal’s wishes when the first five boards were the flat, in fact as Blackadder’s Prince Regent might have said: ‘They were flatter than a flat thing.’

North was not going to let E/W off lightly. However, that old and oft repeated Bols tip ‘The five-level belongs to the opponents’ was yet again true here. Both 5{ and 5[ were slated to fail. But 6{ doubled was still a good save against 4[. East led his singleton heart to West’s jack who continued with the ace and another which declarer ruffed with his ten. He crossed to the ace of spades and took a losing diamond finesse. Now with the help of the club finesse declarer had the rest of the tricks for -300.

Both the trailing team and the spectators were hoping that the boards would not be as stultifyingly dull as in the previous set. We duly saw a swing on the first deal – but not in the direction that those who might have wanted a close match would have preferred

Since none of us in the Bulletin Office had ever seen a 3] call on the sequence from the Closed Room it wasn’t easy to say that it clearly meant one thing or another (well it is easy to say, but not with any degree of accuracy). The consensus was that West’s failure to overcall in spades meant that her failure to bid spades at her second turn suggested the call had to be stopper asking. Mauberquez did not see things that way, and jumped to 4[. Had Lund Madsen

doubled Frey would no doubt have run? Maybe not, if the jump to 4[ showed self-supporting spades. In 4[ declarer lost control early, and emerged with two trump tricks and three minor-suit winners for down 250.

D’Ovidio handled the auction extremely well in the other room, deciding to get both her suits in efficiently and give up on game unless partner could contribute again voluntarily. She bought the hand in a safe partscore and wrapped up her contract for +130 when she played North for the {Q. Well done, and 9 IMPs to Good Six.

The next deal was a grand slam whose chances came in at rather worse than a finesse; a good opportunity for a swing?

Both tables set diamonds early, the French being unable to raise diamonds immediately except with four or extra values. After keycard revealed one ace, both Souths asked for the trump queen and discovered it along with the }K but no [K. Lund Madsen with the ebullience of youth leapt to 7{, confident that facing for an opening bid opposite she would buy some play for the grand slam (though wasn’t a hand like [Qxxxx ]J {KQxx }KQx, or the like, a live possibility?). Reess took a more sedate approach, bidding 6] to give her partner an out at 6NT. Soulet’s spade jack and heart singleton gave him hope that he would have enough for the grand slam. Right he was. Both tables took the spade finesse (Madsen playing to pitch clubs from dummy

then ruff a club in the North hand, Reess playing two rounds of spades early and ruffing out the suit). No swing.

On the next deal both E/W pairs competed over 3{ to 3[ with a diamond void, on what rated to be an eight-card fit for their side, but was actually a seven-card fit. They gave up 50 in 3[ instead of collecting what might have been 300 from 3{x when their partner turned up with most of their hand suitable for offense and irrelevant on defence. Still 9-0 for Good Six, and the boards were ticking away. When the next deal saw both E/W pairs cash nine winners in their 3NT game, we had seen four deals go past without an IMP for the trailing team.

I wonder whether Lund Madsen would have been better advised as a passed hand to bid 3] (fit showing) over 2[? As it was, she virtually committed herself to saving against a game where her side had a winner in every suit on normal defence. In the other room Reess got her side to the rather awkward 5] when Soulet did not read the 4NT call as showing diamond support. Still, neither defence could get a force going and both declarers tackled hearts by running the jack then leading up to the king, for down 300. Another opportunity gone begging; still 9-0 on the set, and a 56 IMP lead for Good Six.

Reess had an easy advance to 3NT, Lund Madsen a far harder call at her second turn. In theory the diamond game is nothing to write home about on the N/S cards but with the {K singleton and the heart finesse working, Drijver had no problem taking 11 tricks, but still losing 11 IMPs to the 660 from the other room. And yes, after a heart lead there is a strip-squeeze for 12 tricks.

The next deal saw another opportunity for swing coming along – but this time the apparent swing to Good Six went the other way.

Reess’ decision to save turned +100 into -100 but it was obviously a sensible moment to sacrifice (unless Soulet’s pre-empt was along the lines of his actual hand). That meant Good Six was on their way to a big pick-up, with 3NT doomed on a heart lead. Up to a point, Lord Copper. The low heart lead from Drijver went to Lund Madsen’s seven and declarer’s jack, and now West had 10 tricks rather than six. It is very hard to find a hand where this play was necessary, and ‘third-hand high’ does seem the logical thing to do here. Still, that meant 11 IMPs more for Reess, trailing by 34 IMPs.

The N/S pairs then both played 3NT where a 3-3 club break meant that even had the defenders in either room found the best lead (they didn’t) game was always going to make. On the next deal Madsen passed out an aceless 13-count in fourth seat at one of the tables. That gave Good Six 2 IMPs (in the other room Reess/Soulet with a combined 23-count had not been able to make 1NT). But the next big swing got us in the immortal words of Sir Alex Ferguson to ‘squeaky-bum time’.

In the Open Room Bompis’ double was entirely consistent with a club void and D’Ovidio’ s club length did not argue against that. She suited the action to the word, and that was -1310. In the open room it appeared that the extra level of pre-emption might keep N/S out of the failing slam. The 3[ call wasn’t clearly setting hearts, though, so Drijver took a second effort. Well done in a sense, and cuebidding would have led to 5]…but Lund Madsen opted for keycard and ran into a bad hand for 1430 when Mauberquez could double for the lead. Again, Lund Madsen had a chance to escape below slam: after a keycard response is doubled one should play pass as denying a control. Responder can sign off without a control now and responder can redouble without the queen but with a control, other calls showing a control and the queen. When she actually jumped to slam the defence had no problem in collecting their two tricks. The match

margin was now 18 IMPs and as we shall see there was at least 18 IMPs worth of swing in the last three deals…

Both Easts’ decision to refuse to open a strong no-trump got them to 3NT the wrong way up, as the cards lay. With a 16-count can you really hope to describe your assets accurately if you don’t make the value bid? Yes, the small doubleton and five-card major aren’t ideal, but this looks as if it is more about telling the smallest lie. Both Norths led a heart. D’Ovidio ducked the first two hearts, won the next, and took the top clubs to discover she had no re-entry to hand outside diamonds. She was thus reduced to her 25% chance of finding both honors onside. When Reess split her honors on the first round of the suit D’Ovidio ducked and when she finessed on the next round, she had 630.

Frey also received a heart lead and decided not to risk ducking two hearts and receiving a spade shift: not unreasonable? She led a diamond at once, and Lund Madsen hopped up with the king, so Frey won the ace, crossed to a club and played a second diamond. Madsen got this right again, winning her queen and cashing out.

You could argue that D’Ovidio earned her swing by reading her opponents well; but it certainly seemed that Frey was rather unlucky to have played the technically superior line and suffered a game swing in the process. The 12 IMPs made Good Six’s lead 30 IMPs, and on the penultimate deal of the match they added a further 6 IMPs when Drijver’ s opening bid of 4] on a 1-7-1-4 good hand ran into a takeout double, (converted to penalty by the Yarborough opposite for -690) while a slower auction saw 4] undoubled concede 450.

A final flat board saw Good Six win by what seemed a convincing margin, but they had been run closer than the score suggested.

ISTANBUL DIARYMARK HORTON

The Editor presents his diary from the European Open Championships in Istanbul

20 JuneIt was a busy day yesterday, culminating in the first

awards ceremony of the Championships when medals were presented to the successful teams in the Mixed Teams Championship and the BAM. Although national anthems are not played at transnational events, the medallists gave an impromptu spirited rendition of the Marseillaise (there were 15 French nationals on the podium) and a foreshortened rendition of the Russian national anthem.

It was also an important day for the EBL Executive who discussed forthcoming Championships. Appreciating that it is important to embrace the latest technology we understand that they may be about to announce the introduction of VAR at every table which should be of enormous benefit to all the Tournament Directors. Paying homage to the Cricket World Cup, matches that are unable to be completed will be decided using the Duckworth-Lewis method. Disputed bidding matters will be resolved using a combination of Hawkeye, Sniko, Ultra Edge & Hot Spot.

In close matches, Formula 1's DRS system will be applied; as soon as a team gets within 2 IMPs all overtricks will count double.

With BBO unavailable, coverage of the Mixed Pairs Final will be intense (how else will the world learn of the many brilliancies and blunders that might occur).

Not quite so easy for our off-site reporters - we thought we might send them the hand records and ask them to predict the bidding. I have a vague recollection (these days most recollections are vague) that some years ago I proposed enlivening VuGraph presentations by giving each spectator a hand held gizmo on which they could attempt to predict the next bid - the system would be called Predict-a-Bid. One might even offer a prize for the spectator with the best percentage. It might work best by restricting it to the actions of one player - just imagine the fun you might have using Predict-a-Bid with Christina Lund Madsen.

Swedish legend PO Sundelin is, amongst other things, checking the convention cards of the teams who will contest next month's European Youth Team Championships in Norway. One pair, having a little room left of their card have included the following under 'Very Important Notes':Whiteboards are remarkableRussian Dolls are full of themselvesMoses had the first tablet that could connect to the Cloud

I expect by now you are becoming impatient to see a deal, so turning reluctantly to the bridge here is a deal from the first session of the EBL Cup. As they might have said in Monty Python - 'and now for something completely different'...

Celebrating the victory - Bas Drijver, Christina Lund Madsen Mikhail Krasnosselski, Tania Dikhnova, Pierre Zimmermann

Altuğ Göbekli, ortağı Dicle Toker’in yukarıdakilerden (d) seçeneğini tercih ettiğini bildiği

INTERNATIONAL BRIDGE PRESS ANNUAL AWARDS

BEST BID HAND CANDIDATES

The IBPA has now arranged long term sponsorship to present its annual awards in Sanya, the home of the Hainan Bridge festival. Last year the awards were televised by Chinese National Television, and this will also be the case in the current year.

The presentation takes place on September 29 – the day after the Bermuda Bowl finishes in Wuhan, and all players who are shortlisted (and appropriate journalists) should by now have been informed that they are on the list. But I am pleased that since the shortlist had to be put together a little earlier than usual, we will be able to show all our readers the candidate hands. Barry Rigal

The awards to be presented in Sanya are as follows:

The Yeh Bros Best Bid Hand

The Gidwani Family Trust Best Defended Hand

The Keri Klinger Memorial award for Best Played Hand

The Richard Freeman Junior deal of the year

And IBPA Personality of the Year.

The 2018 ACBL Fall NABC Honolulu

Playing in the quarterfinals of the Baze Senior KO, Steve Robinson and Peter Boyd employed an unusual control-asking treatment that landed them in the plum spot.

A handy little gadget to have in the toolbox! Should it be called “Roman Key Card Inclusion Super Gerber”?

The 2019 Memhis Spring NABC

Simon Hult and Peter Bertheau are not a regular partnership, but they improvised very nicely here. This was from the first final session of the Platinum Pairs.

(See top of next page.) Given the space available (yes, West might have done better to bid two notrump, but who knew how the hearts were divided?), the two-club call was intended as forcing without spade support, else some other call such as double, two notrump or three of a minor.

The four-diamond jump showed the void, so Bertheau bravely drove to slam and was absolutely right. The top clubs proved enough to allow the spade loser to be discarded in peace and quiet.
