History of French Wine

French Wine Originated in the 6th Century BC. The Colonization of Southern Gaul by Greek

Settlers flourished the Viticulture. The Gauls Knew how to Prune it thus the

Viticulture flourished and Wine became traditional business.

The Roman Empire Liscened Regions in the south between (316-397)BC.

During the Middle Ages Monks maintained Vineyard in France .

Different Regions Of Wine Production

• The Recognized wine producing region in France are regulated by the Institut National Des Appellations d’Origine- INAO.

• Every appellation in France is defined by INAO in Individual regions.

• If a wine fails to meet the expectation of INAO’s Strict criteria it is declassified to lower appellation.

Alsace: This region specializes in White Wine and also known as the white-wine region. Sharing borders with Germany this region shares grapes such as: Riesling, Pinot Blanc, Pinot Noir etc.

Beaujolais: This is a red-wine region generally made from Gamay grapes. Situated in central East of France below Burgundy and above Lyon. This region is famous for the Beaujolais Nouveau, a popular Vin de Primeur which is released annually on third Thursday of November

Bordeaux:It is one of the famous region in France for wine production. It also has a long history in wine production and exporting wine overseas. This is a red wine region and famous for wines like: Chateau Lafite-Rothschild, Chateau Latour etc. Usually made from the grape Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and sometimes Cabernet Franc.

Brittany: It is not an official wine region anymore with some other also being removed yet has a rich history in grapegrowing and winemaking. It is trying to revive it’s viticulture and making some recreational Vineyards such as: Rennes, Morlaix etc.

Burgundy:Burgundy or Bourgogne as called in France is where red as well as White wine are equally important.It is probably more terroir-conscious than any other region and divided into largest number of appellations and Cote d’or provide high price wines.Contd…..

Champagne:Situated in eastern France, close to Belgium and Luxembourg and is coldest of France’s major wine production region. It is home to it’s major sparkling wine Champagne which can be both White and rose.

Corsica:Corsica makes wine and the consumption of wine in that area is done by the locals itself. It is a Mediterranean island and in the region an island wide Vin de pays designation is still developing.

Ile de France:It is another non official made wine region and this region also has a rich history and these type of region no more make wine but still covers 12 hectares of vineyard altogether.

Jura:It is a small mountainous region close to Switzerland where some unique styles of wines are produced for example: Vin Jaune and Vin de Paille. Extensive use of Burgundy grapes such as Chardonnay and Pinot noir and some other grapes are used.

Languedoc-Roussillon:It is the largest region in terms of Vineyard surface and production. It is the region where France produce it’s most cheap wines and it is also known as “Wine Lake”. Most of its wine are sold as Vin de Pays.

Loire:Primarily is the White Wine region that stretches long along Loire River in central to western France. Four sub regions are separated along riverUpper Loire: Sancerre AOCTouraine: Vouvray AOCAnjou: Coteaux du layon AOCPays Nantais: Muscadet AOC

Picardy:It is one of the non official wine regions which is now merged into the Champagne region.

Provence:It is situated at southeast France and close to Mediterranean and the warmest wine region in France. This region produces mainly Rose and red wines. Most common grape is Mourvedre.

Rhone:This Valley is primarily a red wine region in the Southeast France along Rhone river.Syrah is the principle grape in wine making.

Savoy:Savoy or Savoie is a white wine region in the Alps close to Switzerland. Roussanne is the most common grape and Chignin Bergeron is the famous White wine.

South West France:This region is somewhat a heterogeneous collections of wine areas inland or south of Bordeaux. Some areas produce red wines of red Bordeaux while other produce dry or sweet white wines.
