Fun & Interesting Facts

Originally built in 1718, the St. Louis Cathedral in NewOrleans is the oldest cathedral in the U.S. The present structure, the third one on the site, dates from 1789.

Information about

NOLA & Louisiana

New Orleans is the home of the oldest pharmacy in America at514 Chartres Street in the French Quarter. These early medicalmixtures became known as cocktails, coining yet another term.

The formal transfer of the Louisiana Purchase was made atthe Cabildo building in New Orleans on December 20, 1803.

When states had their own currency, the Louisiana Dix(French for ten) was a favored currency for trade. Englishspeakers called them Dixies and coined the term Dixieland.

The term Uncle Sam was coined on the wharves of NewOrleans before Louisiana was a U.S. territory as goods labeledU.S. were from “Uncle Sam.”

Poker was invented in New Orleans during the 1700s. Thegame of craps was invented in New Orleans in 1813 as betting was common activity on the wharves.

The first theater in the U.S. was established in New Orleans.New Orleans is also where opera was first performed in theU.S., back in 1796.

New Orleans is the birthplace of Jazz, the only true Americanart form. Jazz gave birth to the Blues and Rock and Roll music.
