Filoxenia, the Greek word for ‘love of strangers’, is still a way of life in rural Crete where the hospitality of its people is legendary.

Fringed by long sandy beaches and rocky coves, the surprisingly green but frequently rugged scenery is splashed with patches of wild flowers and haphazardly scattered with Minoan palaces, mosques and minarets of Venetian and Turkish conquerors.
