Dieting itself is a primecause of obesity. I learnedthis the hard way.

My educational backgroundis in bookkeeping andaccounting. Math.

When I became interestedin a career helping peoplelose weight I found my choic-es were very limited.

Nutritionist, dietitian,bariatric physician, psycholo-gist. None were really abouthelping folks lose weight, so Ibecame a business owner.

This was in the early1980s, weight loss researchwas limited, and down rightinaccurate much of the time.

Coffee, for example, wasonce considered a big diet"forbidden." It was inaccurate-ly deemed to cause an "errat-ic" metabolism, as all stimu-lants were. Today we knowthat coffee in moderateamounts is a very beneficial,antioxidant rich, beverage.

Chocolate was thought tobe a sin against humanity,high in fat and calories.Today dark chocolate in mod-erate amounts has proven tobe a heart healthy food.

I asked 510 weight lossclients what they needed tobe able to lose weight com-fortably and keep it off.Here's what they said in thateye-opening survey. Itshouldn't surprise you.

About ItCalorie Deprivation

Crash diets cause cravings,deprivation, binging, emotion-al turmoil and eventual fail-ure.

Calorie deprivation attacksthe body's will to survive.Your body responds by CON-SERVING ENERGY (notburning calories). Storing fat,burning carbohydrates andwater. Metabolism slows toprotect the body from starva-tion.

As a result, your metabolicrate becomes erratic, lessefficient. Fat burning muscledeteriorates. Percentage ofbody fat increases due tomuscle loss.

Keep in mind, one pound ofmuscle burns 70 calories in aday while a pound of fat onlyburns three calories. The endresult of this physical assaultand carnage is regaining 10-15% more weight after eachdiet.

Portion Size

Poor Food Choices

Let's face facts. Americadoesn't snack on beansprouts and granola. Themajor problem is simple. Wedon't eat breakfast. By noonwe're starving so we eat afast food, triple bacon andcheese, three pound quick-killburger. After work, we hurryhome and put a starving manfrozen pizza in themicrowave.

The solution is really sim-ple. A 16 ounce fruit smooth-ie for breakfast. I offer a greatone in my book, Cure DietDisease With Invisible WeightLoss. Cold, sweet and realeasy to get down at five inthe morning.

Also, add more fiber to yourdiet via nuts, vegetables,whole grain bread, cereal.

Eating Out

We eat out more than everbefore. Studies prove eating75% of your meals at home,increases the odds of losingweight and keeping it off.

The average restaurantmeal has 100-300 more calo-ries than a home cookedmeal. It's harder to maintainan effective diet eating morethan three meals per week inrestaurants, according to myclient surveys.

Hidden Calories

Research and experiencewith overweight people taughtme they share similar pat-terns of eating behavior, thatdestroy even the most valiantweight loss effort.

These eating habits aren'tnew, everyone knows aboutthem, we just don't empha-size the terrible damage theydo to a genuine attempt atweight loss. Here are two ofthe big ones...

1. Couch Calories.Usually high fat, sugarysnacks and drinks. Chips,soda, beer, ice cream and

cookies. Surveys revealedmy clients admitted to con-suming 350-1000 calories onthe couch every evening infront of the television or com-puter. An extra 350 caloriesper day is the equivalent of a36 pound per year weightgain.

2. Soda Consumption.The average American drinks225 soda calories everyday.Or the yearly equivalent of a23 pound weight gain. Switchto real home brewed iced tea,lemonade or coffee and youcontrol the amount of sweet-ness.

A glass of home brewediced tea with two teaspoonsof sugar has only 32 caloriescompared to a 12 ouncesoda, 150 calories. A 118calorie difference. Make thissimple exchange three timesa day and lose 36 pounds in12 months.

Thirsty Eaters

Many of my clients snackedconstantly. Partly becausethey mistook thirst for hunger.Next time you feel like asnack, have a glass of wateror iced tea instead. If you'restill hungry, have a snack. Fast Eaters

Fast eaters can easily con-sume the equivalent of threemeals in the time it takes meto finish my first. This behav-ior is predominant with over-weight folks and the damageis greatly underestimated.Cure this problem by simplypaying attention to it.

Bag Snackers

The only food I strongly urgemy clients not to eat. Onlyone! That's because bagsnacks, like chips, are devas-tating. One 1.875 ounce serv-ing of Lay's Potato Chips has280 calories. One hundredseventy (170) of those calo-ries are in the form of fat.

Here's the problem. Noone. Not me. Not you. Notanyone I know eats only1.875 ounces of chips. Weusually eat twice that amount.Or about a 58 pound per yearweight gain if you ate ameasly four ounce or twoservings every day for a year.

So there you have it. Whydiets fail. I didn't get into thepsychological reasons of dietfailure, like boredom andemotional eating. Or brainchemical triggers and littleresearched influences ofweather.

However, one thing is forcertain. Diets cause obesity.You don't brush your teeth

with a chain saw. And youcan't achieve genuine lastingweight loss with a traditionalcave and crave, starve andsweat diet. Wrong tool for thejob.

As ironic as it sounds, youcan't lose weight when youare starving. And if you don'tenjoy the food you eat, youwon't eat it for long. Trust meon this one. I've seen it withmy own two eyes. If you wantto spend the remainder ofyour life in an overweightbody, DIET!

My average clienthas been on a mini-mum of three diets.

Many admitted going on morethan three per year for sever-al years.

You name it -- cabbagesoup diet, water diet (danger-ous), fasting diet, low carbo-hydrate diet, high fiber diet,high protein diet, vegan andvegetarian diets, starvationand calorie deprived diets. Allhad one thing in common. Alleventually failed.

It's not based on pie in thesky nutrition, therapy or staymotivated foo-foo. But hardindisputable mathematicalfact.

As a matter of fact, themore calories you currentlyconsume the more weightyou will lose. But you be thejudge. Here it is... And it'sfree from me to you. I havewatched it work weight lossmiracles, hundred of times.

The 10% WeightLoss Solution

After years of studyingserving sizes and how peopleeat, I discovered most serv-ings and portion sizes requireless than ten adult bites tofinish.

Bite sizes are individual.Women require more bitesthan men. Children morethan women. The ten biterule is not always accurate.But it is the majority of thetime.

A Big Mac requires six toeight bites to finish. A hotdog, five or six bites. Piece ofpie, five or six bites. Normalvegetable servings are abouta half cup or six bites. Large

slice of pizza, eight to tenbites, slice of meat loaf, sixbites, 12 ounce soda, six toeight swallows. Large frenchfries, eight to ten bites.Sixteen ounce steak, ten to14 bites.

Check it out for yourself.I've measured these foodsand others for this exact pur-pose.

The average overweightperson in America consumesbetween 3,000-3,500 caloriesper day. But for argumentssake let's assume you're eat-ing between 2,000-2,500calories per day.

Now this is important. If youeat 2,500 calories a day andleft one bite of each servingon your plate, you could rea-sonable assume you werereducing calories, sodium,sugar and fat intake a MINI-MUM 10%.

In reality you will be leaving10-25% because many foodsdon't require ten bites.

Food cravings are abig problem with peo-ple losing weight.

However, they can be com-pletely avoided. Diets endbecause you give into a crav-ing. Then your brain says,"Well you've blown your dietnow, so just as well eat andenjoy!"

Giving into a craving is thefirst step to feeling guilt andthe eventual wild binge wherehard-won weight loss isthrown out the window.

Cravings are the result ofself-deprivation which is whyself-deprivation never worksfor lasting weight loss. EVER!

You can't tell yourself youdon't want something, whenin fact you do. This type ofinternal conversation onlyintensifies cravings becauseyou're thinking about it. Andyou know the "I really don'twant it" part of the conversa-tion is just not so. You dowant it.

If you didn't want it, youwouldn't crave it. You would-n't be telling yourself the "youdon't want it" bare-faced lie.There is a much better wayto deal with cravings. Once

you understand their originsand just exactly what a crav-ing is you can eliminate themcompletely. Let's begin.

How ToEnd Your FoodCravings Today

Any weight loss program ordiet that forbids eating yourpreferred foods, the foodsyou're accustomed to, isdefective and will fail. If youdon't enjoy the food you eat,you won't eat it for long. Andthat's the biggest reasondiets fail.

The only way foodexchanges work is when theexchange food is as enjoy-able as the food youexchange it for.

Anyone who talks aboutchanging your habits is notbeing honest. Changing life-long habits is not easy. It'spainful. It's self-deprivation.It's going without. Most peo-ple don't want to put up withsuch self abuse and I agreewith them 100%.

Diets cause cravings.Forbidding foods causescravings. You cause cravings

by depriving yourself of thefood you crave.

The more you use motiva-tion or "will power" (it doesn'texist) to battle a craving themore intense the cravingbecomes.

In most instances we cre-ate our own cravings. First,you can't crave a food ifyou're not thinking about it. Acraving is nothing more thana thought.

When you keep thinkingthe same thought over andover again, "I wish I had apiece of pecan pie.""Wouldn't a Whopper begood right now?" Thatthought becomes a craving.The proverbial snowballrolling down a hill gainingsize, weight and force until itbecomes an unstoppable

The end result is alwaysthe same. The snowballbecomes so large, just likethe craving, you give into it.

All this from one singlethought that is revisited timeand time again until itbecomes an uncontrollabledesire that must be fulfilled.

The best way to controlcravings is to not have a "for-bidden" list of foods.Research has proven thelarger the list of forbiddenfoods the less possibility oflasting weight loss results.Simply, don't involve yourselfwith any diet or weight lossprogram that restricts thekind of food you eat.

If you can eat it, you won'tcrave it. How can you cravesomething you're allowed toeat? If the ice cream in yourfreezer is calling your name,eat it! The best way to beatcravings is to give into them.

Enjoyment of food is not acharacter flaw and youshouldn't feel guilty abouteating it.

Now the differencebetween an overweight per-son eating ice cream and athin person eating the sameice cream is quantity and fre-quency.

One of my male colleaguesonce said, "You can't expect

an overweight woman toexert self-discipline. The factthat they're overweight isproof that they cannot eat inmoderation or use commonsense. Their emotions com-pletely dictate their behavior."I almost strangled the jack-ass. His clients are put on a1300 calorie diet. He adver-tises, "fast weight loss" andhe gets it. What he doesn'tadvertise is his 100% gainback rate.

I couldn't disagree with theabove philosophy more. It'sidiotic. You can't expect peo-ple to suffer. Eating is anenjoyable experience. Self-deprivation doesn't build self-discipline like my foolish malecolleague expounds.Deprivation destroys self-dis-cipline.

His drill instructor, supertrainer approach is not tobenefit his clients, but to feedhis own suffering ego. Hiswife needs to lose at least 50pounds and both daughterscould lose 30 pounds each.

The lesson here is simple.The more you push the moreblow back. The more youfight a craving the moreintense the craving becomes.

Give in to your cravings.Use common sense andmoderation. Keep the quanti-ty reasonable and reduce fre-quency to a manageable andcomfortable level.

Try this. I learned how tocontrol cravings by talking tohundreds of people. Thengoing through years of trialand error. Eventually itbecame real obvious how toreduce cravings to insignifi-cance. Let's examine thebiggest causes of cravingsand the proven ways toreduce them.

Hunger - The ravenous,uncontrollable and damagingcravings occur from hunger.Worse, these are the crav-ings that cause the mostovereating.

The solution is simple andreal effective. First eat break-fast. When you eat a goodbreakfast you are 400%more likely to lose weightand keep it off then folkswho skip breakfast. Makesure your breakfast is high infiber. Fruit, whole grains andprotein will insure you are notravenous by lunchtime.

I also recommend fruit andnuts for mid-morning andmid-afternoon snacks. Youdon't crave when you're full.Fiber kills cravings because itfills you up.

Triggers - Many sweetfoods cause cravings formore of the same. Reputableresearch has shown whenyou eat foods with combinedhigh amounts of sugar andfats you trigger cravings formore of the same. In partbecause sugar causes aspike in blood sugar. Afterthe spike it plunges. Youcrave more sugar and thecycle begins again.

The combination of sodaand chips is a big time trig-ger. The more soda youdrink, the hungrier youbecome. A vicious cycle thatleads to habitual abuse andmany, many unwantedpounds. Reduce sugar andhigh fat food combinationsand you reduce cravings pro-portionately.

Boredom Eating -Experts call this "stimulus"eating. You eat to stimulateyour sense of taste, touch,feel, smell, sight and evensound.

Boredom eating results incouch calories. Chips, dip,cookies, ice cream andcandy. Mindless, massivecalories. Boredom eating is asymptom of a sedentarylifestyle. The more sedentary,the more you eat from bore-dom, the worse the weightproblem. Each is in directproportion to the next.

Emotional Eating -Reaction eating. Eating as anemotional response tomoods, events, circum-stances and stress.Emotional eating is the resultof an unresolved problemcycling around in your head.The problems cause an emo-tional reaction. And that reac-tion can be uncontrolled crav-ings and eating.

Cravings are controllableand you can completely elimi-nate them if you wish. Veryfew of my clients suffereddamaging cravings becausethey stayed full and satisfiedeating a sensible diet.
