Thenew entrants in Caterham-on-the-Hill are: WestwayButchers in Westway, It’s aPet’s Life in Chaldon Road,Cheveux by Toni in the HighStreet and Olivish Mediter-ranean restaurant, also inthe High Street. The newCaterham Valley businessesare The Floral Gallery inStation Avenue and LaFiaba Italian restaurant inCroydon Road. Chris Windridge, who origi-nally introduced the idea ofa loyalty scheme in Cater-ham, said: “The launch hasgone really well. Shoppershave been really enthusias-tic about the scheme andare keen to back our initia-tive to support local busi-nesses. Most of the shopsthink it’s a great idea andwe hope to have even more

Members of a local churchare bitterly disappointedthat their dreams of a newplace of worship have beenthwarted by local planningregulations. Oakhall Church has servedthe local community inCaterham for the last 115years and has been holdingits Sunday services in deStafford School in Burnt-wood Lane since the congre-gation outgrew theirpremises in Francis Road.When the church set aboutpurchasing Garrod House,an empty office building inChaldon Road, the PlanningCommittee of Tandridge Dis-trict Council agreed thechange of use from an officebuilding to a church but withten restrictions attached. Oakhall Church member,Andy Mayo (pictured onpage 1, far right) said: “Wewere happy to compromiseand accepted seven of theten conditions but three ofthem would make it unvi-able for us to move into thebuilding. The first was thatwe could not occupy thebuilding after 10pm; thesecond was that we couldnever use the outside of thebuilding after 6pm and thethird was that we could nothave music of any sort, noteven a child banging a toydrum, outside the buildingat any time. Tesco backsonto houses in Grove Roadand yet has full permissionto function 24 hours a day.Surely we cannot have onerule for big business and an-other for a local charity andchurch?” At a public meeting onThursday, 27th August, thePlanning Committee refusedto lift the restrictions.Planning Committee mem-ber, Councillor Matthew

Groves from Caterham,said: “Tandridge Council’sPlanning Committee ap-proved the change of use forGarrod House to allowOakhall Church to turn theoffice block into a largechurch where many commu-nity activities and youthevents would take place.Everyone is aware of what agood job Oakhall Church dofor the community. One ofthe key issues of the plan-ning policy is to limit the im-pact made on the localcommunity. I was able topersuade the committee toamend one condition so thatthe church can stay open tothe early hours a couple oftimes a year, perhapsaround Christmas andEaster. I’m pleased thecommittee supported mymotion to relax the condi-tion.” Tandridge District Councillorfor Chaldon, Pat Cannon,said: “This building has re-mained vacant for a numberof years and to a lesser ex-tent is becoming an eyesorein the same way anotherbuilding in the Caterhamarea has been for too longan embarrassing time.Having a religious building inan area can only be good forthe community whateverthe denomination, and I be-lieve it brings with it addi-tional core activities thatserve to enhance that com-munity.”Andy added: “The siteopens onto a main road withnobody to disturb and theschool opposite fully sup-ports our application. Theparish council also fully sup-ports the removal of theserestrictions which would bedifficult to observe and couldeasily be inadvertently bro-ken. They would be a con-stant source of anxiety to usas trustees and we thereforecannot go ahead with thepurchase.”

East Surrey residents re-quiring urgent medical as-sessment can now be seenat Caterham Dene Hospitalfollowing the opening of itsnew Rapid Assessment Cen-tre last month. DameChristine Beasley, ChiefNursing Officer of England,was the Guest of Honour atthe opening ceremony onMonday 10th August, whenshe unveiled a plaque tocommemorate the event. Speaking about the hospi-tal’s new centre, DameChristine said: “I am de-lighted to be here for suchan important occasion forCaterham Dene Hospital.It is so important forcottage hospitals such asthis to keep up with thetimes - things have changedso much over the last 20years and some hospitalsget stuck in the pastwhich is not good for thecommunity.”The new service has beenset up to provide residentswith fast access to seniormedical and nursing opin-ion, on-site diagnosticequipment and physiother-apy services. Its main aimis to prevent acute hospitaladmissions and Accidentand Emergency atten-dances. Nurse Practitioner, PaulaDeadman, explained: “Ourrole is to investigate, diag-nose and institute the cor-rect treatment regime andfor the patient to remain inthe community, in their ownhomes. To this end we canassist with providing sup-portive care and equipmentto help patients remain in-dependent.”

The centre has access to X-ray services, ECG tracingand can screen for infection,anaemia, renal function,oxygen status and warfarinlevels on-site, with the mostcommonly seen conditionsbeing possible deep veinthrombosis, chest infectionsand falls. The staff are alsoable to give blood transfu-sions and intravenous infu-sions.Lead Nurse Practioner, Ali-son Cass, said: “We are de-livering a service to thecommunity that we are veryenthusiastic about. I feelvery strongly about servicesbeing accessible and with

the frail and the elderly thishas not always been thecase. The type of patientwe see is someone who hasbeen referred, where thedoctor has concerns aboutthe person’s health andfairly immediation attentionis required over the nextcouple of days. This is not awalk-in centre for peoplewith injuries and illnesses -they are still going to EastSurrey Hospital or their GP.We will be gradually ex-panding our services ac-cording to the communityneeds - we want to delivera service that is led by thecommunity.”

‘A Better Cater-ham’ - ready totake on biggerthings!This summer saw the ABC‘A Better Caterham’ steer-ing group transition intoa company limited byguarantee, known as the‘Caterham Community Part-nership’. The ABC groupwas originally formed threeyears ago to co-ordinate the‘ABC Healthcheck’ survey oflocal residents. Since thesurvey, the ABC group hasworked hard to secure fund-ing and implement im-provements to the town inaccordance with the issueshighlighted as a result ofthe Healthcheck. Spin-offshave included the launch ofthe Shop Smart loyaltyscheme, a Meet CaterhamBusiness event at SurreyNational golf course andhelp with co-ordinating the

first ever Caterham Festivalearlier this year. The transition to a limitedcompany will give the groupa more permanent basisand help to secure fundingfor improving the townthrough bids to grantproviders such as theSouth East England Devel-opment Agency (SEEDA).

At 2.35pm a Spitfire, Hurri-cane and Lancaster of theBattle of Britain MemorialFlight flew over the KenleyTribute to commemorate'The Hardest Day' (18th Au-gust 1940), when RAF Ken-ley was almost destroyedby enemy action.A party of Air Training Corpscadets from Selsdon (66Squadron) and Kenley (450Squadron) were present

and the Standard of Kenley& Caterham RAFA flankedby the two ATC Bannerswere dipped in salute as thethree aircraft passed over.Veterans of 615 Squadronwho were based at Kenleyin August 1940 hold theirAnnual Reunion on thenearest Sunday to 'TheHardest Day' at thePortcullis Club as guests ofthe local RAFA Branch.Club members and veteransshared memories and hap-pily chatted until the dayfinished at approximately5.00pm.

Mile of PenniesThe Building Fund of St.Peter and St. Paul's Churchin Chaldon has been givena boost following an inno-vative fundraising eventheld earlier this summer.The 'Mile of Pennies' tookplace on Saturday 18thJuly to help raise moneyfor the new extension atthe church. Local resi-dents took their smallchange to lay along a mile-long trail that had beenlaid out in the churchgrounds. Secretary of theSt. Peter and St. PaulFundraising Committee,Patricia Johnson, said:“We were delighted withthe turn-out. So manypeople have been savingtheir small change whichthey brought along for thechildren to line up on thepath to the church.” The pennies ran out afterhalf a mile but the eventstill raised £401.13 for theBuilding Fund. The churchis now over halfway tomeeting its target of£326,000 for the exten-sion that will provide a

room for meetings and ed-ucation facilities, a toilet, akitchen and level accessinto the church for thosewith mobility problems. Patricia added: “Thankyou to everyone who sup-ported us including friendsat Glebe House and St.Luke’s Church and theGuides – especially theRainbows who had beencollecting for weeks in avery heavy pot!” The Fundraising Commit-tee are always pleased toreceive pledges and dona-tions. Importantlyeach will be on hand toprovide in-depth knowl-edge of the respectiveareas. This move does notmean that you will haveseen the last of the officersbecause if something oc-curs when they are onduty, if no-one else isavailable then, as with all

my staff, they will respondin order to reassure andcombat crime within Tan-dridge.Early August saw PC JoClarke and PCSO NickWhite along with col-leagues from CID carry outa drugs raid at an addressin West Parkside, Warling-ham following the issue ofa warrant under the Misuseof Drugs Act. A search ofthe property found sub-stances believed to beClass B cannabis whichwere seized along with aquantity of money anddrug paraphernalia. An18-year-old man was ar-rested on suspicion of pos-

sessing a Class B drug withintent to supply.In the same week swift ac-tion from PC Bassom withcolleagues from the 24/7response team led to thearrest of five suspectedburglars within minutes ofa break-in. Sometime be-tween 4am and 5.30am,burglars broke into asports clubhouse in Har-row Road causing morethan £700 worth of dam-age before stealing 30 bot-tles of spirits, beer andwine as well as a cash-tilland a small amount ofcash. The burglars wereseen running from thescene by a member of thepublic who contacted Sur-rey Police. Local officersquickly attended and lo-cated items matchingthose that had beenstolen. Five men were ar-rested on suspicion of bur-glary and attempt to steal. These two instances illus-trate that we do respondto and act on informationfrom the community. Sea Cadets refurbish

vandalised HQCaterham Sea Cadets were not to be de-feated when, in 2007, vandals caused sig-nificant damage to the front of theirheadquarters in Caterham-on-the-Hill.After an appeal in the Caterham Independ-ent, Caterham Round Table donated themoney for repairs only for the criminals tostrike again three days later. Undeterred,Caterham Sea Cadets decided to embark ona building project which would repair thedamage once and for all, whilst improvingfire safety and disabled access to the build-ing. Speaking about the project, the Command-ing Officer Aaron Clarke said: “This was amajor project for such a small charity, andthough we are open to young people aged10 to 18, we struggled to accommodate dis-abled children or even elderly or disabledparents. The huts are years old and weren’tbuilt under such strict fire or disabled legis-lation. We undertook to bring ourselves intothe twenty-first century.” The project, costing £10,200, is nearingcompletion with only some internal work tobe done. It has involved fitting a state-of-the-art fire alarm system, emergency light-ing, cooking facilities, disabled ramps andimproved fire exits, as well as internal doorwidening. It was funded by a Surrey GrassRoots grant, a grant from the Marine Societyand an innovative Sky Dive by one of the

Unit’s 17 year-old cadets. Direction FireLtd also donated a fire alarm systemworth almost £5,000 when they heardof the ambitious project. Unit Chairman, Tony Skilbeck, said “Thisis a huge step forward to enable inclu-sion of all in our Unit’s activities. Wehave lots of further improvements inmind to make the building a safer andmore pleasant and practical environ-ment. We are looking to increase ourcadet numbers and expand the activi-ties on offer. There is a real buzz aboutthe place now.” Caterham Sea Cadets is open on Tues-day and Friday evenings from 7pm to9.30pm and young people are encour-aged to get involved. If you haven’t discovered‘The Harrow’ yet inStanstead Road, Chaldon,then a trip to this popularcountry pub is well worth avisit. David and Becky, theowners, have established agreat reputation for tradi-tional, home-cooked foodwhether you fancy a lightlunch-time bite in the gar-den or a cosy three-courseevening meal in their rusticrestaurant. It was the latter that mypartner Keith and I enjoyedon a recent Friday-eveningvisit, and after a hecticworking week it was lovelyto chill out in the gardenwith a glass of wine beforegoing inside for dinner. Mychoice for starter was theHomemade Soup of the Daywhich was mushroom. Thesoup was thick and creamyand came with some warmcrusty bread - real comfort

food! Keith ordered theDeep Fried Whitebait andsaid that it was: “Whitebaitas it should be - spot on!” David recommended one ofthe day’s ‘Specials’ for mymain course, the ‘Slowroasted pork with applemash, gravy and fresh veg-etables’. A very generousportion of sliced pork ar-rived on a bed of creamymash with a side serving ofvegetables. The pork wasbeautifully succulent andwent perfectly with theapple mash. Keith choseanother Special, the ‘TunaSteak cooked pink andseated on a bed of rice andgarden peas, topped withlemon mayo’, which he said

was delicious and a nice,light alternative to steak.Other choices on the menuincluded Freshly BatteredCod with chips, mushy peasand tartare sauce, Honeyand Mustard Glazed Hamwith egg and rustic chips,and Rump Steak marinatedin a red wine and mush-room sauce. As we move rather toorapidly into the autumnmonths many gardens arenow taking on a rathertired looking appearance.Roses have become brownlooking, dahlias seemedslow to start, whilst sun-flowers and gladioli are al-most non-existent.Remember the few hotdays at the time of theWimbledon tennis champi-onships which promptedthe met. office forecast of‘a barbecue summer’?This, of course, did notmaterialize leading to themet. office issuing anotherstatement saying that themedia wanted “a headlineforecast” and long rangeforecasting always carriesa risk!Leaving that aside, thedull, damp conditionswhich have prevailed overmost of the summer haveprovided good growingconditions for shrubswhich rely on their foliagefor display, but the lack ofsunshine has had an ad-

verse effect on blooms –the hydrangea excepted.Hydrangeas, as outlined indetail last month, likeplenty of water and havebeen well accommodatedthis year.The garden can be fresh-ened up in the weeksahead by cutting backsummer perennials whichhave finished floweringand forking over bordersprior to planting springflowering bulbs. Cut background cover geraniumswhich will significantly im-prove their appearanceand probably produce asecond flush of flowers.A number of shrubs whosemain flowering is earlier inthe year may also producea second flowering, so re-sist the temptation toprune too hard and givethem just a light trim.Harder pruning can thenbe carried out in late Octo-ber or, in many cases, nextspring.September is a goodmonth to divide irises andtransplant evergreens.Let’s just hope for a dryautumn.Happy gardening.

flypast of the Battle ofBritain memorial squadronon Sunday 16th August? The three 1940 aircraft fly-ing line abreast broughttears to my eyes. The Spit-fire and Hurricane returnedto make their salute overthe Airman’s Corner, St.Luke’s churchyard inWhyteleafe and then a verynoisy Lancaster followedthem. Each year brings backmemories of that fatefulday in August 1940 whenthe German airforcebombed Kenley Aerodrome.It was frightening for a tenyear-old to be in an air-raidshelter and then see all theblack smoke billowing overthe airfield. The Chaldon FeteThe Chaldon FeteThe annual August Bank Holi-day fete at St. Peter and St.Paul School in Chaldon was asoaring success again thisyear. The late summer sun-shine and the promise ofplenty to entertain attractedhundreds of people to theevent, which made £5,500last year for local charities. The popular Fun Dog Showhad record numbers of en-trants of vaarious shapes andsizes - all looking well brushedand glossy and on their bestbehaviour. The Polygon Dix-ieland Jazz Band provided themusic for the afternoon and

local Tandridge District Coun-cillor, Pat Cannon and othervolunteers kept everyone fedwith a steady supply of deli-cious hot dogs and burgers. Amongst the attractions werea number of stalls represent-ing local organisations, includ-ing the Chaldon AmateurDramatic Society, the BourneLocal History Society and theChaldon Footpaths Commit-tee, all keen to promote thewide range of activities onoffer in and around the village.

A View from the PresidentOur Club, having played its first match in September 1928is just about to embark on its 82nd season and I, havingjoined in September 1960, will be starting my 50th year withthe Club in one capacity or another. My continuousinvolvement since then has therefore put me in the uniqueposition of having known almost every player who hasturned out in the black, amber, silver and mauve kit designedby Laurence Beauvais who at that time taught art atCaterham School. The black and amber reflects the Schoolcolours and the mauve or purple addition represents (as itdid in Classical times) those who have moved on to maturity.

The Club grew quickly, over the years increasing to four the number of senior sidesregularly fielded on a Saturday, and with a growing reputation for the rugby traditionsand the friendliest of welcomes to newcomers. We were also noted for innovation, beingone of the first ‘junior’ clubs to host an Annual Seven-a-Side Competition which willcelebrate its 50th Anniversary before long. For many years, too, we capitalised on therugby tradition for song and socialising by initiating the erstwhile annual (serious)singing competition.In recent years, a reduction in the number of regular senior sides has been compensatedfor by our hugely successful mini-rugby and youth enterprise and, indeed, the furtherinnovation of a talented Women’s XV. It could be said, therefore, that rugby is not simplya game played by men with funny shaped balls but is an activity that finds a place foreveryone either as players or in running all the activities that make the Club tick. I was first introduced the Old Caterhamians in 1989where my son had started playing at the age of 7.When I walked through the clubhouse doors it immediatelyfelt like home to me and 20 years on it still does.My interest in the sport took me to coaching through themini and youth sections over 18years. This has broughtgreat memories of both serious playing side and the funside of the game, including many memorable tours throughthe youth section and seeing players mature.

I now find myself as Chairman of the Old Cats; a community rugby club that is runby volunteers for the benefit of all who want to be involved in the game of rugbywhether on or off the field of play from the age of 5 years.The Old Cats provide a safe, qualified coaching through to the senior game where thespirit and enjoyment expands. Whether observingwildlife, discovering newplaces or rediscoveringfavourite haunts, it’s achance to unwind, switchoff and breathe in goodfresh air.But did you know that inour part of Surrey therehas been a 21-year con-servation project specifi-cally designed to make thecountryside accessible?Almost 200,000 hours ofvoluntary help have beendevoted to improving ourlocal countryside since theDownlands Project beganin 1988. This means restoration,creation or conservation ofponds, chalk downland,woodlands, heathlandsand self-guided trails.They also carry out scrubclearing, tree planting andsign post, step and stileconstruction.They provide gloves, tools,training, tea or coffee, bis-cuits and above all lots offun. The Project’s successis thanks to a dedicatedgroup of volunteers who

are ready to welcomenewcomers. Teamworkingis an enjoyable and essen-tial part of this opportu-nity. Welcome to our new regu-lar column following thefortunes of Whyteleafe FC,through the 2009/10 sea-son in Ryman Division 1South. Pre-season saw a com-pletely remodelled Leafeside with only a handful offamiliar faces remainingfrom a disappointing lastcampaign. Results wereunsurprisingly mixed asmanager Stuart Masseytried to find a group ofplayers that gelled. Thefinal week saw a spirited

0-2 defeat to a CrystalPalace XI, followed by animpressive 4-0 win overTilbury, so hopes wereraised leading into the firstleague game, which sawus up against a usuallystrong Sittingbourne side. The ‘Leafe Army’ travelledwith hope and the opti-mism that a new seasonbrings, but unfortunatelydespite dominating a largepart of the game we leftSittingbourne emptyhanded. The first half wasgoalless, but Leafe did

enough to suggest that wecould get a result. How-ever hopes were quicklypunctured in the secondhalf when our hosts scoreddirect from a free kick onthe edge of the box. Wat-son then quickly replied,levelling the scores with atowering headed goal froma Kember corner. At thatstage the game lookedours for the taking, butdespite a fair amount ofpressure Leafe conceded asilly penalty in the last tenminutes, which was dulyconverted, condemning usto a 2-1 defeat. The fol-lowing Tuesday saw us en-tertain a fancied Ramsgateside at home, and an ac-complished team perform-ance saw the first threepoints of the season col-lected, with a 25 yardscreamer from Butler seal-ing a 1-0 win.
