Following the creation of Nottinghamshire County Council’s £1 million COVID-19 Community Fund to help communities across Nottinghamshire as they respond to the current Coronavirus public health emergency, County Councillor Andy Brown and County Councillor Reg Adair, who represent the Leake & Ruddington division, are delighted to report that £5,000 from the fund is being allocated to East Leake Crisis Response, managed by East Leake Parish Council. Andy and Reg have also allocated a further £500 from their Councillors’ Divisional Fund to support this work.

Councillor Andy Brown said: “I’m delighted that East Leake Crisis Response is one of the organisations benefitting from Nottinghamshire County Council’s COVID-19 Community Fund. This is an incredibly challenging time for residents, but it is also bringing out all that is best in local people,

helping and supporting each other, especially the most vulnerable and elderly. Our contribution of £5,000 from the COVID-19 community fund and £500 from our own divisional funds will help to support this work.”

Councillor Reg Adair said: “I cannot thank enough our social care and NHS staff and also the army of volunteers who are providing tremendous support to people at this most difficult of times. Nottinghamshire County Council has launched a wide range of initiatives to support them in this work, of which the COVID-19 Community Fund is one example, as well our Coronavirus Community Support Hub.”

The Leakey Pens, East Leake’s writers’ group, are looking for local people to get creative as they take their daily walks during lockdown.

The Leakey Pens have launched a group on Facebook called ‘Poems and Places’ so that people can share photographs of their favourite places in East Leake, accompanied by a poem or a piece of prose.

They aim to collate a selection of pictures and pieces of writing by local people into a book to go on sale at the time of East Leake’s scheduled Cultural Festival. The

idea was to have the pieces on display at sites throughout the village over that weekend. Of course, all events are in doubt right now, but through social media everyone can get involved and the project can still go ahead.

The Leakey Pens are particularly keen for parents to help their children to get involved, get creative and then share their pictures, poems and pieces for them.

Pieces and photographs can be posted directly on to the Poems and Places Facebook page.

We in East Leake are very fortunate to have a space like Meadow Park. In the lock-down period it has provided an area in which to take exercise, walk dogs and give small children a change of scene and a breath of fresh air.

With the playgrounds closed Meadow Park provided colour and a variety for residents with small children and kept them away from the closed playgrounds which only tantalised those too young to understand what was happening.

A very thoughtful person put up pictures of Easter bunnies and Easter eggs around the park over

the holiday period and many small children (my granddaughter included) thoroughly enjoyed spotting them. A very big thank you to whoever took time and trouble to do this.

Despite successive flooding over the autumn/winter months and some variable weather, Meadow Park looked very colourful in April.

In May you should spot celandines, violets, speedwell, red campion, wood sorrel, anemones and bluebells. Fruit trees in the orchard area will be in bloom and the hawthorn will be noticeable by its blossom and distinctive smell. The fruit trees have been planted for the benefit of wild life and the fruit (apples, cherry etc) are small and quite bitter.

In May butterflies such as the orange tip, small blue, common blue, small copper, red admiral, peacock, and brimstone can be seen (as well as a variety of white ones). Birds will be well underway with nesting and raising their young. Most of the nesting boxes will have birds in them, mostly of the tit family. We did not manage to clear out the old nests last autumn, early winter but this should not deter our regulars.

You may be interested in the results of the RSPB (Royal Society for the Protection of Birds) Garden Watch.

Back in January nearly half a million people counted almost eight million birds, making this year’s Birdwatch one of the biggest ever.

The UK top ten:

1. House Sparrow 2. Starling 3. Blue tit 4. Woodpigeon 5. Blackbird 6. Goldfinch 7. Great tit 8. Robin 9. Long-tailed tit 10. Magpie

This year’s top ten for the UK is little changed from 2019, with the top three birds unchanged from last year. Once again, top spot is taken by the house sparrow, making it first for the seventeenth year running. There’s a little bit of shuffling at fourth and fifth, with the woodpigeon moving into fourth and, last year’s number four, the blackbird, dropping one spot to fifth.

06 NEWS

Talented performers from Keyworth School of Theatre & Dance entertained audiences at Loughborough Town Hall on 14th and 15th March. The cast of 196 was made up of pupils aged from 3 to adults.

The opening dance, The Time Machine, set the scene for the whole show depicting an inventor from the 1800's who with help from showgirl assistants built a time machine from 'cogs' and was successful in discovering time travel.

The Inventor played by Abigail Dring was also successful in making it to the final of this year's CBBC's singing show 'Got What It Takes'.

The Inventor, who holds the whole show together travelled along a time line from the prehistoric era to the present day and then into a dystopian future. The latter performed by the senior commercial

dancers, who had spent weeks prior to the event with commercial teacher Arron creating a dance video which was projected as they danced live to depict 'dystopia'

An audience member commented 'Totally amazing show, the costumes, dancers, choreography and that dystopia dance was another level! Well done to Kirsty, Ann and all the KSTD team'.

Principals Ann and daughter Kirsty said they felt very lucky that the show was able to go ahead as 'Timeless' was the last show to take place before Loughborough Town Hall closed its doors the day after, due to the Covid-19 pandemic. "We would have been bitterly disappointed if it had not gone ahead, as the parents, pupils and teachers at KSTD had all put so much effort into the production. It was a huge team effort and such

a success raising that amount for Macmillan. The performers were all amazing and all the teachers at KSTD felt so proud", said Kirsty, 'Timeless' producer.

KSTD have temporarily closed their doors due to the pandemic and instead examination pupils have been given the opportunity to access the online classes KSTD are offering to keep some of the examination classes going and to keep up pupils' spirits during these difficult times.

"Unfortunately, our summer examination sessions have been postponed but we hope to reinstate these as soon as we can", says Ann.

KSTD looks forward to opening its doors again and returning to a busy timetable of weekly classes in all genres of theatre dance for pre-school classes-adult tap for all dancers from beginners to

advanced.

In the meantime we wish to congratulate all our 'Timeless' performers and also thank all the amazing ‘Timeless’ team, made up of teachers/ choreographers, scenery/props designer, photographer, chaperones / backstage, the administration team for all their help with the production and wish them and their families well during this difficult time.

- Ann, Kirsty and all the KSTD team.

I’m among the fortunate in this time of Covid-19 isolation, in that I have a garden. So, given that the pandemic has arrived in the spring, when a naturalist’s attention is strictly on the outdoors, I am able to indulge myself to some extent in the wonders of wildlife without the need to travel.

Normally I would wander beyond the confines of my boundary hedges but as many commentators have said, there is boundless variety on our doorstep if we only look.

I have looked at moths in my garden for over fifteen years and

identified 452 species at the latest count and for over forty years, I’ve watched the birds that have used the garden (49 species) and those that have merely flown over it and been observed from its confines (another 25).

I haven’t carefully recorded other groups but it is easy for me to tot up that there have been 17 butterflies and just 6 species of (wild) mammal. If mine were a more rural garden I might have added several more, such as Badger, Weasel, Roe Deer and Mole to that

list though keen gardeners would probably be happy to forego some of these.

I’ve only recorded wild flowers over the past few years but I’m already up to 121. I could be more tidy but it’s interesting to see what blows in and much of my wildlife depends on them. Pandemic lockdown has given me time to weed out many wild flowers this year so I won’t be having any Elephant Hawk-moths – they need willow-herbs and I’ve pulled them all up!

I’m told that with some effort, I could easily find a dozen or so mosses and liverworts and I’ve barely mentioned the insects; Britain has 1,830 species of bug, 4,075 beetles, 7,064 flies and 7,500 ants, bees and wasps (hymenoptera).

Given that my whopping 467 butterflies and moths is around 20% of the British total and assuming that other insect groups are similarly represented in our gardens then I could easily have missed another 4,000 insect species.

But enjoying garden wildlife is not about numbers, it is about the pleasure they bring in their behaviour, buzzing, colours, song, flight, behaviour and unpredictability.

I lie down on the ‘lawn’ after a digging session and watch a Tawny Mining-bee explore the

vicinity before deciding on a site to excavate its tunnel, leaving a tell-tale miniature volcano of dry, crumby soil. The vertical shaft will be 2-300mm deep and have cells branching off in which she will lay her eggs and provide nectar and pollen for the larvae.

Over in the pond, where the Greater Spearwort is getting out of hand, Smooth Newts are swimming to the surface for a gulp of air before submerging again and briefly exposing their spotty orange bellies. They will lay their eggs on the surface leaves.

The baritone ‘cronk’ of a Raven prompts me to look up and there it is – very high but its distinctive silhouette is unmistakeable and near it is a soaring Buzzard. They are clearly enjoying the sunshine and the breeze as they stoop and tumble at each other.

No need to travel when the spring warmth brings our nature back to life.

12 The latest news is online nottinghamlocalnews.comGARDENING

May is one of the most exciting gardening months of the year.

There are seeds to sow, patio pots to be planted and hanging baskets to be hung. Vegetables such as runner beans and green beans will soon boost the production in any area designated for food crops. In the garden tulips should still be blooming and decorative shrubs will be making a striking show.

Beds & Borders In sheltered areas, sowing seed and planting out tender bedding plants can be undertaken early in the month. The end of May is the earliest that we can expect frosty nights not to be a fatal event. Take your pick of when it's best for you to plant outside - either early if you are prepared to cover your plants when a frost is forecast for later in the month.

The lawn Mow the grass as often as you are able and start to reduce the cutting height of the mower to get to the ideal height for summer. Why

not give your lawn a weekly cut in summer to a minimum of 20 mm (3/4 of inch) and if it is well fed, the lawn will become thick and strong. If weeds are a problem use a selective weedkiller to kill them off.

While you’re mowing, take note of any bare patches, moss and weeds and deal with any problems you see.

If you are on a water meter it costs about £3 per week to water the average lawn. Our web site contains a watering tool to help you calculate how little it costs to water your lawn. If weeding and feeding sounds like hard work Greener Gardens can do it for you.

Grow your own It's time to start tender green beans into growth including runner beans, climbing French beans and dwarf bush beans. Tomatoes - You may have sown the seed at the beginning of April, if not you may be able to buy seedling plants from local stockists.

Finally, Now is a great time to sow seeds of green salad leaves.

Nowadays you can buy a packet of mixed seed. When the leaves are about 10cm tall start cutting with a pair of scissors leaving the stumps behind where next month's crop will emerge.

Patio tubs & baskets As colourful displays from tubs, containers and hanging baskets are some of the most important summer garden features.

You can start planting up tubs and hanging baskets with summer bedding, ready to put out at the end of May or early June, whenever the fear of frosts has passed. Starting them indoors means they will come into flower earlier in the summer.

Plant up your patio pots, tubs and hanging baskets with the fuschias,

geraniums, petunias and other trailing and bush plants that will provide colour for the rest of the summer. Regular watering and feeding will keep your containers looking fantastic all summer.

Greener Gardens are taking a pro active part in dealing with COVID-19. We have amended our working practices to ensure that along with our staff, new and current customers remain safe, especially the vulnerable.

13Great local photography on our Instagram @Nottslocalnews

In these deeply troubling times, I wish everyone the very best, particularly all those who work for our wonderful NHS. Never before have we been so indebted to them. It would be difficult to write constructively about something were the topic not so obvious.

Being told to stay at home and not venture out has been a real shock to most of us. Especially to someone like myself who works outdoors and would live outdoors if possible. But out of this COVID-19 crisis one thing has become very apparent. How much we value our open spaces and in particularly our gardens. Being able to use the garden has allowed for a degree of sanity. I empathise with anyone who does not have this luxury.

This pandemic has brought home how valuable an asset our gardens are. Even before this, much has been expressed on the value of how gardens can improve our mental health. They can be places where we can take in fresh air. Watch and help wildlife. Have fun

and interact with the kids. Let the dog go crazy. Be at peace. The list is endless. Life will return to normal, but I can see massive changes

coming to the way we work. Hopefully, this acts as a wakeup call and allows for better practices to be developed. Paying those that

contribute so much to our general well being to be paid their worth.

Statistically, during this crisis, only 15% have carried on working from their work place. Many others have carried on from home. Since lock down, we as a business have had an increase in enquiries for improving garden spaces and in particularly garden offices, play areas and gyms. People have had the time to evaluate their spaces and want to make better use for them. We have been responsible and followed government lock down advice, but once allowed, look forward to the huge challenge of making our outdoor spaces greater.

Stay safe and best wishes from myself and my team.

We have been building quality gardens locally for over 30 years. To view examples of our work visit www.duncanrossgardens.co.uk or contact us at [email protected] or call 0115 9336463.

For the last few months Prograss have been training up new team member Oliver Dod and he is now fully prepared and working on Prograss lawns.

His training included passing both the PA1 - City & Guilds Principles of Safe Handling and Application of Pesticides and also the PA6 - City & Guilds, Award in the Safe Application of Pesticides using Pedestrian Hand Held Equipment which are the necessary qualifi-cations required to work safely on grass areas.

Ollie, as he likes to be called, is a local lad originally from West Bridg-ford but two years ago he became a married man to his wife Frances-ca and had an amazing wedding in Thailand. They now reside in Gedling, Ollie's interests include ice and roller hockey as well as being a keen football fan.

Ollie's previous work experience was indoors doing administration etc. but when he out that there was an opportunity to work outdoors at Prograss, he jumped at the chance

and is now firmly established as an important member of the Prograss team.

Prograss are currently working on Spring treatments which usually includes the application of a nice, fresh, lively, slow release fertiliser however if there is too much moss still present after the wet Winter it may be a different product with an iron content to control the moss. The Prograss operator will decide this after inspection. Those fast emerging Spring weeds will also be dealt with on this visit. This will set the lawn up nicely for the Summer.

They will also be busy doing mechanical work which includes hollow tine aeration, scarification and overseeding using the new seed disc drilling machine. The seed germination results from this machine have been fantastic even in dry weather and the fact it cuts the seed into the soil considerably reduces loss from bird activity.

If you would like to give Prograss, your local, independent lawncare company, the chance to show you

what a difference they can make to your lawn then please contact them for a free, no obligation lawn health check and quote by calling 01949 837367 or simply visit their website at pro-grass.com. Alternatively

you can send them an email to [email protected].

Projet are your local, independent external property cleaning company, using their experience and expertise they can make an amazing difference to how your property looks.

Here is a recent patio clean that we completed with photos of what it looked like before and after they have cleaned it. You can see it is almost unrecognisable and the customer was full of praise for the work done. The concrete slabs look a completely different colour from what they were before the work, transforming the appeal of the garden.

To get these results the first thing that must be right is the equipment. Projet use a high specification, commercial pressure washer that is built into the van and has its own internal water tank needed to generate the power required to remove even the most difficult stains and grime.

They have also invested heavily in the tools needed such as applicators, sprayers, brushes etc.

to make sure that when products such as sealants, sands and biocides are applied, it is done with the precision needed to make the job look perfect. They also use the best quality products available so the end result has the required finish.

But as we all know having the best equipment is worthless unless you have the right person using it and Projet director and main operator Joe Hegarty is hugely experienced and knows the trade back to front. Joe is fully qualified in all the necessary fields such as holding a spraying and chemical application license and It will be him that will be doing the job so you can feel rest assured that your project will be completed to the highest standard.

Projet take on all types of external property cleaning including patios, drives, paths, roofs, conservatories, gutters, facias... In fact anything external that needs cleaning, they are more than happy to take a look at and tackle.

If you would like Projet to come and

do a free, no obligation inspection and quote then please contact them on 01949 833525 or you can email them on [email protected].

You could also take a look at their

brand new website available here: www.projetltd.co.uk which has a great deal of information and pictures explaining what they do, their process and advice.
