Review/Reflection

One of the major “key aspects to change people’s lives through adventure or experiential learning, lies in what we call “Reflection” Reflection is the sugar and spice, it is the icing on the cake, it is the rainbow in the sky and it is the most important part of the learning and/or therapeutic program. The term: Reflection/Review: This process is called differently by different authors abroad. In this script we will refer to the review process at the end of an activity or program as “reflection”. The most valuable instruction I found came from “The role of the instructor” by Ken Kalish. In this chapter of “The role of one of the roles of an instructor is that as a translator” it describes reflection as facilitating the discussion after activities in such a way as to:

Focused direction. Not interpreting the students experience for him. Stimulation of the student’s minds. Towards conclusive ends.

Focused direction This direction is from the actions of the activity and is directly related to the objectives as to why you did the activity in the first place.

Not interpreting Finding out what and how the student experience the activity. The “experience” and “feel” during the activity, how he “thinks” about this or that etc.

Stimulation This stimulation is directly associated with the needs and goals of the student. IOW ask questions directly related to the student him/herself.

Conclusive ends Mr Kalish calls these conclusive ends generalisations.(More on that later)

Without reflection you are only offering a good experience. Without reflection your program is meaningless regarding change and growth.

Page 6: Free Magazine - ALLES - Home

Without reflection your client will learn the minimum. Reflection becomes the steering boat of “your means to an end”

No Reflection - No Success, Know Reflection - Know Success.

“Generalisation” and “transfer of learning” The generalization and transfer of learning most often only happens during reflection, for that reason if there is no reflection there is probably no success (if we look at our objectives of the previous chapter) According to educators in the field, it’s the weakest link in the experimental learning programs. Definition: This generalization is the process of taking what has just been experienced in an activity or camp relive it in our minds, talk about our experiences and everything pertaining to it, learn from it and make it applicable to other situations and circumstances in real life. This generalization brings forth a transfer of learning-from the activity to real life. E.g. taking another route in an adventure trails and end up faster or closer to the end than otherwise stipulated. The generalization: Getting rid of the traditional ways of doing things in a changing or renewed world: e.g.

My grandfather did it this way, my father did it this way and sure as hell; I’m going to do it in the same manner.

Transfer of learning: The risk I took in the adventure course ends up being a great win for the group because we took Pete’s advice, maybe I must ask a few other peoples opinion before I continue investing my money in the postman delivering services as the way my parents and grandfather did. This “generalization” and “transfer of learning” seems to be the most important part of your program, otherwise you are just presenting a great experience and the transfer of learning normally happens during reflection time. Remember experience alone is not enough for education. Nb I have found, during camps and outing where student are with us for five days or more that this generalization becomes a part of their thinking

process after the first few says of drilling the “process” and they will come up with the most incredible learning experiences straight after the activity and we end up talking for hours after an activity. This results in a strange phenomenon, especially during therapeutic camps! In the beginning the client/people, especially young adolescence, will prefer doing hours of activities and spend five minutes talking/reflecting, at the latter stage of the camp as we went through the group process (later more on this) with some groups, they prefer to talk for hours and rather spend five minutes on the activities. My guess is that through these reflections, generalization and transfer of learning and surely God starting to “gate crash” our conversations,(he’ll just use any means and opportunity he can find to love, heal and meet people’s needs, even if he is not invited and knows he won’t get the glory for it), not just are these people’s needs are getting fulfilled, but they also start feeling a sense of being a “part” of a family, they realise “I’m not the only one with these issues”, they love being, for once in their life vulnerable, they share intimate issues that is getting resolved, they enjoy sharing-especially if it can help others(or themselves), and the list can go on and on. In fact, the results of having a skilled facilitator in this regard will transform lives to a greater expend, I believe, that some psychological programs have not been able to resolve for months. The evidence is overwhelming. Even in normal traditional camps, where no therapy was intended, lives will change with this process. Over the years we received numerous call and letters of appreciation regarding this. To me its just weird that teenagers who normally never likes to talk in such circumstances and especially not about their hurts and other vulnerable things will end up spending hours doing that. Let’s get back to our article:

“To reflect is to look back over what has been done, so as to extract the net meanings, which are the capital stock for intelligent dealings with further experiences. It is the heart of intellectual organisation and of the disciplined mind.” John Dewery-Experience and education.

This reflection is more than just a discussion or thinking back. It is to be logical and honest about the acts, feelings and outcomes, it is about looking at the adventure or exercise and learning something about it- and then

Page 8: Free Magazine - ALLES - Home

applying it to the situations in other realms and not just gather wasted un-used and irrelevant knowledge.

Practical and basic roll-out:

An example of a basic reflection session as discussed: Step 1:

a) What did I plan to do? b) What did I end up doing? c) What was the outcome? d) Could there have been a different outcome? e) What did I experience during the activity? f) What did I feel because of the outcome? g) Who said what h) What hurt me i) What made me laugh j) Why k) Etc.

Step 2: a) Do I want to try and achieve a different outcome now? Yes: do activity again, after that goes back to step 1 No: move step 3. Step 3: a) What situation in life has the same circumstances as our activity? b) Have you been in such a situation? c) What did you do/how did you act? d) Was the outcome similar to the mistakes we made in the activity? e) How else can we apply what we have learned in life?

Don’t be naïve! Do not teach that our activities outcomes and solutions have the same outcomes and solutions in life. Teach the process of how we overcome the difficulties in the activity and the skills involved to overcome.

E.g. look again at the example of my grandfather and father did it this way! We won’t teach the principal of: “don’t stick with habits and old ways”, but rather the skill of doing your homework about the subject before making decisions, or discussing with others who have more knowledge on subjects that I don’t know anything about.

Also remember: Particular experiences do not hold particular meanings.

Also remember: Particular experiences do not hold particular meanings.

The cliff-hanger and coat hanger story? No two people see and experience things the same. Don’t force your believes and ways on others! Rather teach principles than believes.

Because we address needs, we must also reflect on reactions of students during activities, e.g. fear, excitement, discouragements, humiliation, etc. These reactions are surface indicators of what lies deeper inside, like the tip of an iceberg. Remember that these reactions are not a reflection of our character, but rather an evidence of symptoms that grew from:

The way we see ourselves. The ways we think others see us. Experiences that left an impression.

A failure to reflect our feelings is a failure to address personal needs there and then. When we reflect on the feelings experienced, we can confront and address the needs made visible by our activity (individual needs) and then go on with our generalization of the group’s needs. People are individuals and we will treat them that way! Remember: In reflection, the instructor and/or facilitator is not the one talking, but the one guiding. You don’t sit and teach! You guide. In 99% of circumstances, “hungry needs” will make their own appearances like hungry teenagers.

“Filling our ears with all we have to say, we are deaf to what we have yet to year.” Windell Johnson

Do not always have to reflect through a “discussion” or “talking. Use students to act out what you feel or let them do drama’s as a group. Use your creativity and surprise them with your reflection. Other examples of reflection:

Read a short poem or a page out of a book, which explains how you/they felt.

Have a team member share a real life story. Watch a video. Use illustrations in nature. Get a specialist to give teaching session. Read a parable. Watch other children in the park/an activity.

Personal journal. Isolation or solo’s.

A personal Journal. A personal journal is one of the greatest means of reflection and one of the characteristics of highly successful people. Some people journal their feelings, what people say to them, their dreams or any experience they’ve had. What it is? In short, a journal is a diary of what happened and how I experienced it. A journal has no borders or limits except that it must be about me or us and must be true and honest. It is a sure way for people to look back it and learn more about who and what they are. Journal privacy is of utmost importance during camps and no one has a right to invade that privacy unless that person has given permission without pressure. Journals, most often than not, have much deeper insight to feelings, failures, victories, emotions etc, because it is “private”, the client is much more real and honest than they would be when verbal. To conclude: Reflection can be done as much as possible during your time with the students and must be encouraged to become a life style rather than an activity. Don’t forget, in the beginning, especially young people will hate this “talking” thing. They are in a generation that has most likely been taught either through peers or circumstances not to talk about themselves in this manner, and it takes a bit of skill and experience to get the conversations flowing; never the less, keep on trying, the results will astonish you and amaze some relatives ;-) A lifestyle of reflection is as important as living itself. This is the time where we look back and learn beyond measure. It is an essential life skill for growth and a key ingredient to success. Next month we will see how reflection ties in with “Emotional Intelligence” and how it can be applied to increase Blooms “stages of learning” We will also share more examples of reflection.

•Leadership Development –

•Adventure through play•Character development•Resolution enhancement•Risk taking and management•Group dynamics•Fitness training

We provide young people with the edge on a future with promise and potential and we equip youngpeople with skills that stand out on applications to universities and in the eyes of potential employers. We know that competencies such as an understanding of EQ skills, time, stress and conflictmanagement , leadership, and now more recently ”followship”, team work and collaborativeproblem solving and creativity will become increasingly important in a global economy.

Coupled with an acute personal, environmental and social awareness, young graduates have to becarefully prepared to enter the job market with skills and competencies not always fully provided by eventhe best schools. To address this we have designed a range of programs that enhance and enrich existingareas of personal development and produce ‘stand out global citizens’ complementing modernparenting needs - We are passionate about equipping young men and women with the skills and lifeexperiences they need to succeed at university, in a career and in life and to create the environment forpersonal and professional growth.

The Warriors program is distilled into 5 pillars which are integrated and delivered in 4 quests of sevenweeks each. Each quest has a flagship adventure activity complemented with a rich and variedassortment of diverse activities. These are available over different time periods during the year to caterfor increasing requests from schools, youth institutions and parents. Each is showcased on our website.Although we recommend full year participation, each quest with its unique features, make it possiblefor a student to join in at any time of the year and participate in a range of experiences that are designedaround the 5 pillars:

• Core Skills (EQ fitness) – strengthening the inner being.• Epic Skills - Driving resilience and character growth through adventure.• Self Skills - Part 1: How to develop and present a digital presence to the real world. Part 2: An introduction to the commercial world.• We Skills - Embracing the gift of giving – extensive community service• Eco Skills - Engagement with the natural world: conservation and wildlife appreciation.

Page 46: Free Magazine - ALLES - Home

The Warriors Seasonal Quest Programs are designed for young adults who are looking for realdirection, change and purpose. The foundation of the Programs is to support the transition ofentering adulthood. Being completely different from the typical well-worn commercial gap-years,Warriors has had remarkable results and success for over a decade. Past Parents and Warriorsbecome one big family, and all their references about their amazing experiences speak for themselves.

After the successful year on the Warriorsgap year program participants may apply for theMulti Activity Instructor Development Program. This is a selected portfolio of outdoor pursuit skillsdesigned to fully equip a graduate with therequired to enter employment in the adventureindustry. With this training our graduates will havethe qualification, skills and experience needed toget a jumpstart in the adventure guiding industry. This is a two-year Program starting in theWarriors Gap year program with the Second yearfocusing more on instructor traits. There is a growing need in South Africa tonot only train outdoor pursuits instructors, but todo so at a standard comparable with theinternational arena.

Our aim is to train instructors, not only forthe South African Market, but also for the widermore diverse international arena. Warriors instructors receive training fromprofessional facilitators, each of whom are highlyexperienced and qualified in their respective fieldsof expertise. With adventure guides being in such shortsupply in South Africa, and a growing need forexperienced and qualified multi-activity instruc-tors, Warriors Academy has set about developingthis course and aim at being national leaders in thetraining of such personnel.

The Spirit of Adventure Leadership year differs from most others in that it is a working year. It consists of three main parts, namely working as an instructor, participating in adventurous excursions and committing to a study program for the year. Instructing

We need young people just out of school to work as instructors with the school groups who attend the camp. The instructors are responsible for leading groups of about 10-12 people through adventurous activities and facilitating their learning and developmentthroughout.Wetraintheinstructorsinallaspectsoftheworksothattheyarecompetentandconfidenttomaintainthe extremely high standard of safety and quality we expect. This development will be invaluable throughout a person’s life. Instructors sign an employment contract, as required by law and are paid per day for working with groups. Most people will never get another chance to do a lot of what we offer and we are also able to offer slightly better prices because of group size and regular bookings etc.

Study

We expect each instructor to engage in some sort of study program each year. It is there for a number of very good reasons such as making better/more informed decisions about a full study path, gaining more insight into career choices, ruling out potential career choices etc etc. There is a vast selection of distance learning institutions, courses and subjects out there to choose from.Sometimes just the quiet and distance from the home and city allows minds to think a little more clearly and see a bigger picture. The development of each of the instructors is of as much importance as the development of the school learners and we do our best to help and encourage each instructor to grow and make sound decisions from the year.

Investment in the youth has always been a top priority for the ATKV, that is why we3 are so active in this regard. Klein-Kariba already has over 40 returning schools every year and this number keeps growing. The ATKV offers a post-matric gap year programme that offers school leavers the opportunity to acquire new life skills while they decide on a career. KWAZULU NATAL MIDLANDS, DRAKENSBERG, LADYSMITH, SPIOENKOP

We take pleasure in this opportunity to introduce to you our Em’seni Conference Centre and camp. “Em’seni” means “Place of Grace” and we believe that this is experienced by all who visit Em'seni. With its incredible natural beauty, Em'seni is a place where people will discover spiritual, emotional and psychological healing and wholeness.

WHERE WE ARE SITUATED

Situated on the banks of the Tugela River below Spioenkop Dam and nestling in the valley between Winterton & Ladysmith. The origins of Em’seni came from the need to create a home base for Scripture Union Independent Schools camping and the site operates as their home base. However, we were aware that many others will be able to make use of these wonderful facilities as well, and so Em'seni operates as a facility in its own name.

WHY USE EM'SENI?

After 11 years of existence, Em’seni has been used for School field trips, Adventure camps, Church groups, Confirmation camps, Leadership & Prefect courses, Scripture Union Winter & Summer camps, and YWAM events. We are the base for the Berg and Bush Mountain Bike race, Oxpecker Trail Run and many specialized courses.

FACILITIES

Em'seni offers about 130 beds, in combinations of up to 8 in a room. Quality ablutions adjoin the bedrooms. A large dining room and separate conference hall with smaller alcoves and meeting rooms allows for ample meeting space for 150 people. A modern industrial kitchen is fully equipped and food standards are high. Em'seni does not allow groups to self-cater, but instead its competent staff satisfy the physical needs while programme leaders can focus on intellectual, spiritual and other needs. Staff and other adults are accommodated in quality chalets.

•2.5 hours from Durban •3.5 hours from Gauteng •16 km from Winterton •30 km from Ladysmith

RUN YOUR OWN PROGRAM OR PARTNERSHIP WITH OUR COMPETENT STAFF

Em'seni is very flexible in how you make use of our facility. You are welcome to book it and run your own programme. Alternatively, we will work with you to make a personalised programme to meet your specific needs. We do have installed sound and data projection facilities and white boards are available.

ON SITE AND SURROUNDING AREAS

On site there is a swimming pool and spectacular Tugela River frontage, which offer many water opportunities including a “bum slide” and kayaking. A large field, and volleyball courts allows for any number of games and other fun activities. Lovely

river walks and access to the Spioenkop Game reserve and dam nearby increase options for activities. Em'seni is a birders paradise. The historical Spioenkop Mountain towers nearby and offers a glimpse into the Anglo-Boer war. Many schools use us as a base for touring the KZN Battlefields, with qualified guides available.

LIMINAL SPACE AND TEMPORARY COMMUNITY

“All transformation takes place in liminal space. Nothing fresh or creative emerges when we are inside our self-constructed comfort zones, only more of the same. Much of the work of the biblical God and human destiny itself is to get people into liminal space and to keep them there long enough to learn something essential and genuinely new. It is the ultimate teachable space…” Richard Rohr in Adam’s Return. At Em'seni we understand that getting young people out of their normal spaces and home comfort or discomforts is essential for making an impact on their lives. Liminal space is the in-between space, where the normal and expected is not present and new real things can happen. It is the threshold of the new, the doorway from the old – the pause before going forward. The creation of a Temporary Community takes place on a camp experience and elements that enable this process are being in Nature, with comfortable surroundings and minimal rules. This allows the young person to relax unwind and be ready to receive new ideas an challenges on how they live and perceive reality. An understanding of comfort, growth and panic zones is essential in creating a good teachable moment. A teachable moment, in education, is the time at which learning a particular topic or idea becomes possible or easiest. If a young person is in “panic” mode then learning shuts down and survival takes over. If a young person is in comfort zone then they can do and say the right things but there is little change potential. Processing helps young people make connections between their educational experiences and real life, as well as future learning. It helps them realize that they can apply the lessons they learn and skills they use in a “contrived environment” to real life issues. Processing helps create purpose, meaning, and focus of an activity and helps learners take advantage of teachable moments. These are things we understand, build into our programmes and impact on young lives, so join us at Em'seni and together we will build the future.

Learning has never been this much fun!

Some 90 minutes from Johannesburg and an hour’s drive from Pretoria, just outside Bela-Bela, lies the inviting ATKV Klein-Kariba resort in one of the Waterberg’s most beautiful ravines. This top-class resort offers a wide range of accommodation options with true Bushveld hospitality. At the adventure centre, even larger school, student or church groups can make use of Klein-Kariba’s facilities at a discounted rate.

With various activities, recreational facilities and amenities such as a restaurant, fast-food division and a well-stocked shop, there is no such thing as boredom at ATKV Klein-Kariba. To top it all, we are located along the Bushveld tourist route, which serves as the ideal base for day tours to explore nearby tourist attractions. The educational programmes at Klein-Kariba is designed to effectively focus on learner development in a fun and safe environment. We have fixed courses which includes a leadership development course, a bonding course, an adventure course, an eco-adventure course, as well as a nature course. We can also conduct activities or programmes that are required by school groups, by designing an educational programme that suites the specific needs of the school or group. The Klein-Kariba Leadership Centre is the ATKV's top destination for educational courses and can house up to 200 learners in a variety of accommodation units depending on availability. The resort boasts with everything from apartments to large and comfortable houses spread throughout the mountains surrounding the resort. Klein-Kariba also have wooden chalets surrounding the dam on the resort, fully furnished 'tent houses' and the 'Tekkie Camp' which consists of nine furnished tent houses that accommodates 12 people each, for affordable group accommodation.

Klein-Kariba's Adventure programme has become a favourite among school groups, and includes numerous group activities and games like box car racing, abseiling, archery, hiking trails, raft building, paint ball and air rifle shooting, swimming, obstacle courses, night marches, a kayak challenge, map reading and many more. The Nature programme is all about the identification of animal and insect species, animal track identification, and plant identification. The programme also provides social entertainment in the form of nature-related challenges that learners have to complete. The Leadership programme helps identify potential leaders through a series of challenges, team games and organised entertainment activities. The programme is designed in such a way that it stimulates leadership qualities in pupils. The Bonding programme helps pupils get to know and bond with each other by encouraging interactive participation in a range of different activities. We also regularly sponsor youth conferences, leadership development programmes, and educational symposia where you get the opportunity to contribute to the future of our children and the generation after them.

Situated within the beautiful 1,000 hectare Umhloti Nature Reserve, 15 kilometres outside Nelspruit, the Jane Goodall Institute (JGI) South Africa Chimpanzee Sanctuary is home to chimps that have been misplaced from their natural habitats in Africa. Chimp Eden was established in 2006 and is home to 33 chimpanzees. This JGI chimpanzee sanctuary brings the world of chimpanzees closer to humanity through education end eco-tourism. The goal of the chimpanzee sanctuary is to rescue chimpanzees that have survived the bush meat trade, been orphaned, traded in the illegal pet market, or rescued from being traumatised for entertainment in circuses, beach resorts and night clubs.

The chimpanzees at Chimp Eden are the lucky ones, living out their lives in a risk free environment and being provided with the necessary attention to recover from the trauma they have experienced. The chimpanzees spend their days in semi-wild enclosures, and show normal social interaction and behavioural patterns as group members. The South African chimpanzee sanctuary is proud to be part of the Jane Good Institute, which is a global leader in the effort to conserve and preserve endangered species and habitats, and in particular chimpanzees.

On your guided tour, each chimpanzee is introduced and their often sad stories are told in an effort to create awareness and educate the guests on the struggles wild chimpanzees face and what we all can do to help save an protect these beautiful creatures for our future generations.

The sanctuary is a non-profit organization and rely greatly on donations from the public and the guests that visit the sanctuary and support us by doing a tour, becoming a chimpanzee guardian or simply buying a unique gift in our curio shop.
