V^- .>'#2!*

Greetings from Africa in the name of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.I arrived safely on African soil on January 19th. It was great to finally gethere and to see Shanda Delaney's familiar face. My trip was good and excitingas I learned to exchange US dollars for gulden in Holland, then to the SouthAfricsui rand, then to the Zimbabwean dollar. What an experience to figure whatto tip and if things were too expensive etc. etc. in all these foreign currencies,

We (Shanda and l) left Jo'buig on Monday the 20th in my "new** car. Yep, a1982 Yellow VW Jetta GI5. It is in excellent condition and a really nice littlecar. We met Marcia Kay Thomson (my new flatmate) and Cecil Ross, (another singlemissionary) several hours north of Jo'burg. We did some shopping as more itemsare available in SA than here in Zimbabwe. After picking up all of the listsof things that they needed to get for others we continued on to the border. Oh,what an experience... you have to let them icnow everything you have in yourpossession. As a first time resident I do not have to pay duty or customs onany of these items but I do have to declare it all. We were finished in 1|- hours>diich from what I understand is good timej.•Smile*! Then on to my first night'sstay in Zimbabwe. We stayed at the Lion and Sleuhant Inn—thatched roofs, birds, dogs, cats, but no lions or elephants*! It wis a wonderful night*s sleep. Weheaded to Harare on Wednesday, the 22nd. Along the way I saw ny first mud hutsand they seemed as if I'd seen them before. I guess my slide presentationhelped me feel as if I*d been here before too! Smile!

We also saw a huge troop of baboons cross the road in front of us, as well asmany monkeys and a lot of cows! Yep, cows!! We also stopped several times fora "coke" break. You can get the "Real Thing" in even the remotest of places!*

We reached Harare early afternoon and came to the College, Thank you all forthe many cards and letters that were waiting for me here. It was great to getmail my first day here. (l love to get raaill) I'm settled in somewhat nowbut only partially until the two crates arrive. It has all the things I couldnot get in a suitcase—Ha! Ha! (One wels on!ly 4-' x x 8' and the other was4' X X 2*6". And I would need a BIG suitcase for all of that—right!)

Life here is at a much slower pace than in the US, But, in Harare, we can goto an occasional movie and dinner out as well as shopping of all kinds downtown. It is culture shock to have to stop for tea time in the morning andafternoon, but one custom I'm quickly getting use to!! Harare is so beautiful. The gardei^ and flowers always so neat and colorful. There is not any trashalong the roads for they use everything over and over!! Driving has definitely ....been a cultiire shock—but the other day I realized that it seemed comfortableto be on the left-side instead of the right-side of the road!! (Am I adjusting?)

I have never been greeted so enthusiastically by people. The students, all 10of them plus the 2 kitchen workers, all greeted me with hearty handshakes andBIG smiles. They are so excited to learn about me and about life in the US.They also express a love for me because I have come to help themi! I'velearned several Shona wortte—enough to get a few laughs and smiles from thestudents here at the College. They desire so much to learn about the Lordso they can return to their homes to teach others. And all .are serioiosabout their education.

My job here consists of many things from secretary, to grocer shopper, toimmigration/customs errancfe to whatever else needs to be done. Team Workis the name of the game,

I wish I could fully express to each of you the blessings the Lord has givenme since I arrived. He sent a friendly face when I was nervous and unsure\diat to do when going through customs in S.A, He helped us quickly throughthe border. He helped me feel "at Home" without much trouble. He hasblessed me with a wonderful mission "family", who are always willing to helpif the need arises, I am so thankful to asus for giving me a deep senseof joy and peace in Zimbabwe, I do miss all of you and am thankful for the

"'lart'you take i"n~oui' (the Lord's-and: my)-ministiy hex-e.— -

Please continue to pray for me as I continue to learn my way around townand all that I need to know. And please keep the mail coming. It is sucha joy to know people in the US care so much! 11 Pray for the college also.We are expecting a total of 20, 22, Z^• ???, students in May. And we arehaving to do some building changes as quickly as possible but with veiy littlemoney. But the Lord, continues to provide the wisdom we need to make thedecisions and the students so that we can train them to be leaders of the

Thy word is a lamp unto my feet and a light unto my path.—Psalm 119:105

Gree t i nqs name oi our Lord and Sauiour Jesus Christ.

With the -flowers blooming and the trees budding it is becoming anew adventure as we head into summer and all that it has -for us.It has been so di-f-ferent -for me to not experience one day o-f rainsince the end o-f April and still none to come until November. Ihave heard that much o-f the southeast In the U.S. has beenwithout rain this summer too. I am sure the heat has beenu n be ar ab 1e at 11 mes. Bu t with Fall c om i n g there will h op e -f u 1 1 ybe some rel ie-f. It is so exciting to see how the Lord hasblessed us with change—even down to the seasons in our lives.

We have had an excellent -first term o-f our "new year". Thestudents have grown and changed so much.

I want to tell you o-f one o-f our students, Reuben Mundudye. Heis in his second ye.ar and -from the Mashoko Area (southeasternZimbabwe). He was a very shy young man In January when Iarrrived. Not too sure o-f himsel-f or o-f his abilities, and nota Qood student grade—wise either. But a change started to takeplace around April. He and 5 other ZCC students came to helpduring their holi day with the Hoi i day Bible School (L'BS) i nHarare. Reuben worked with the littlest ones (pre-school age)and WOW what a change I began to see that week.

He has this past term started a junior youth program on Saturdayafternoons at a primary school near the college. What a blessinghe has been—self-confidence in all he does. He has become a

dear and special blessing to me. (And his class work hasi mproved also!)

For "spending money" he comes to my flat (apartment) and does thegardening. He is an excited and more assured young man. Pleasecontinue to pray for all 23 students at the college. We try notto stress that grades are THE MOST important BUT theirindividual efforts ARE important. It is great to see it allfinally come together and they begin to understand and"plug-lnto" the classes and the lessons they are learning, in theclassroom and outside of it too.

I attend Greencroft Christian Church now and It is also a

blessing to me. The people there, though may be only 40-50 innumber, are excited about growing and learning. The church ismultiracial and we all love and strive to serve together as onebig f am i1y.

At present we are meeting in the farm house that is on our 5acres of land (Charlie and Betty Delaney live in the back portionof the house). We have started to renovate the old pool pavilionto house the growing congregation. The enthusiasm of the peopleIs shown In many ways... through their helping with the nurseryand pre-schooler to the volunteering for setting up tea and"goodies" which follows the service each Sunday.

Page 12: Free Jayne 1986 Zimbabwe

On June 22, we experienced an exciting time. We had our "MiracleSunday". We had a goal of $-3000.00 to be giuen that day, to helpwith the renouating of the pool house. Well the Lord surelyblessed us that day with "exceedingly abundantly above all thatwe Ccould) ask or think", for there was over $6000.00 given thatday. This was truly a time of fellowship and sharing as weworshipped together during the service and also shared togetherin fellowship after the service with a dinner.

As i t stands now, we plan to buiId an adequate new churchbuilding on the land we have and use the renova.ted pool p'av i 1 i onfor youth activities and a fellowsh ip hall. Please keep thisgrowing, loving, serving congregation in your prayers also.

Greetings in the name of Jesus,

Enclosed is a copy of a letter Jayne. Linda has written to her home church inTallahassee. We enjoyed it, so we wanted to share it with all of Jayne Linda'sfriends. The holidays are fast approaching and these will be another first timefor Jayne Linda, If you haven't already done so, take time today to write aspecial letter of encougement to Jayne Linda.

On Saturday, November 13» we talked to her because she needed to tell us abouther car. As you may remember, she purchased a used VW Jetta when she arrived lastJanuary in South Africa. It now needs to have the carburetor rebuilt, but sinceparts are not readily available in Zimbabwe, this means a trip to South Africa, which will taJce at least two days. Please pray for her travel, that she has nomore car problems on the way to and ftom South Africa,

This newsletter is sent to over 250 addresses, and we pray that the words fromJayne Linda will lift your spirits as they have for us, her forwarding agents. We suggest you include Galatians 6 in your Bible studies. Since several haveasked vrtiat Jayne Linda actually does in Harare, here is a list taken from arecent letter,

"I do everything but teach...I am the secretary for the Zimbabwe ChristianCollege, secretary for Jack Pennington (Chairman for the Central Africa Mission),This includes going to immigrations, customs, import control, stay in touch withall our missionaries in Zimbabwe, buy food for the 23 plus people we feed threetimes daily, oversee the six workers, do the books, pay the workers, buy food forthe conferences we have, help with the young people's group, have daily contactby radio with our two mission hospitals and do any errands that the missionhospitals need." We believe that is for one week.

As you know, Jayne Linda is paid a salary of $4^0 per month from the giftssent. This comes from the generous gifts of aix Churches and about ^0 other

1^• For the last five months —June t.hrough October —these giftsaverage about $1163 per month. In addition to her salary there are the following fixed expenses. Health Insurance $82,80, Social Security Premiums $60,27,Reserve for return travel to US $100, This leaves about $if30 each month forher missionary use. Some of her expenses in Harare are Rent $200, gas $230,and Electricity $4o. (Those last three are Zimbabwe Dollars.) She also willbe required to pay taxes to Zimbabwe which will be about 20^ of her living $.

If your church is not currently helping with a missionary, why not ask themto support Jayne Linda, Or maybe a special love offering could be taken nearChristmas for her. Your church will be blessed and the Lord's work will bestrengthened in Zimbabwe,

We, as Jayne Linda's forwarding agents, continue to remember her supportersin prayer and we encourage each of you to step out in faith for our Lord andSavior, Jesus Christ, Someone in your hometown today needs Jesus, be ready totalk to that person today on behalf of Jesus,

Jesus loves you,

Greetings in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ. This letterhas been long in coming to many of you an'd. I apologise for thedelay. The work here in Harare, Zimbabwe, is rewarding and attimes frustating, but the He sustains-me continually.

The rewards have been the more than 30 people that have cometo the Lord and have.;been obedient in baptism because of a 6night evange 1 i s.t i c -efrf or t. Also, th>e.young people have started totake deep and sincere looks at their own lives and being obedientin baptism also. This has been an exciting two months. We have

_se-ejj aboLL_t__45-bap t-i sed at the two churches, Har a.r-e..-Chr i slJ,anChurch and Greencroft Christian Church, here in Harare.

Another reward is to see the multiracial people pulltogether and truly work "as unto^ the-Lord." The shepherdingprograms, the building funds, the discipleship and the prayergroups are all going well.

The frustrations seem to be where Satan tries his hardest to

hit...the little things. Such as lack of car parts, lact of soappowder for laundry and the slow pace in which most everyth1ng isdone. But when I stop and place those-thingsn~perspective—thehorde's grace, blessings and promises out number the "littlefrustrations" of life here.

My prayer for each of you is that the Lord continue to helpyou grow and change into what He has planned for you.

Thank you so much for your prayer support and your financialsupport. It is exciting and truly one of God^s blessings to haveyou share with me in these ways. Your continued prayers forZimbabwe are greatly appreciated, as we see the rains coming andknow that they are very needed.

I hope to hear from you all personally and thank you againfor all your love for me. May God richly bless each of you.

In His Love and Service,

"Let us not become weary in doing good, forwill reap a harvest if we do not give up."

DECEMBER 1986

"May the joy o-f the season surround you, Merry Christmas."

As I stop to think about Christmas, I think o-f theChrist child who came and who loved and died -for each o-f us.

I think o-f the joy o-f giving, living, loving and sharing. Ithink o-f all that we can make o-f the time as well as all the

things we can keep it -from being. I think o-f -families beingtogether and "extended" families celebrating His preciouslove. I think o-f how excited the students at Zimbabwe

Christian College became with just a simple few pieces o-fcandy, and an American ball point pen, and a few homebakedgoodies each. What an enjoyable sight it was to see thembegin to dance and thank God for the blessings He has giventhem through this small "gift" and how they appreciated it.This was more than most of them have ever received at

Christmas. How precious they are to me.I would like to tell you about Lester Moungo this

newsletter. He is a second year student, 39 years old andtruly as inspiration to me. He is an encourager and anuplifter. He has a wife and little girl. (All of ourmarried men must leave their families at their homeplace dueto the lack of facilities. We have 6 out of 23 students that

are married.) At times this is hard for him to be away fromhis family due to illness and help with the farming. This issomething these men must consider before coming to ZimbabweChristian College.

Lester is fully committed to the work of the Lord. Hehelps with many churches in the area west/northwest ofHarare. He serves these churches faithfully on the weekendsand always returns to help with the baptized believersdiscipleship. He realizes the need to train leaders for thechurch but knows it is a slow and sometimes painful process.Lester is truly a leader and a loving servant of the Lord. Please keep him in your prayers as he studies and grows.

Page 16: Free Jayne 1986 Zimbabwe

We have closed out the second term o-f our school yearand looking -forward to some rest and change o-f pace. As weget the building cleaned and scrubbed, keep our vegetablegarden going between the rain and get the things done thathave been put o-f-f — we do need strength and rest.

Some o-f the recent events that have happened (or willhave happened by the time you receive this) are thecelebration o-f Thanksgiving with my mission -family. As 30 o-fus gathered around the table we thanked the Lord -for Hiswatch-care over us all, -for His continued blessing o-f thosewho support us (you) , and -for our -families in the USA -fromwhom we are separated during these holiday seasons.

I will spend Christmas with the Delaney's and Jill Shawat Greencro-ft. We will be excitingly -finalizing the plans•for Shanda's wedding on January 3, 1987. This will be ahappy time as Mark Oakley (from Zimbabwe) and Shanda aremarried and continue to work with the church at Greencroft

here in Harare. Please pray for them also as they starttheir new life together.

Thank you each one for the cards, letters and gifts youhave sent. It is truly an encouragement and lots of fun, too.

May God continue to bless each of you as you haveblessed me during this season of remembering.
