Over 100 volunteers formed a human chain and passed thousands of books from the old library, across Fort Street (closed by special permission from the State) and into the new library. This library has served the community and Johnson County well, but the time for change is at hand. A process that began in 2008 with a needs assessment for the Johnson County Library System is finally moving closer to expansion of the main library in Buffalo. On August 10, 2012, Johnson County purchased the property just north of the existing library. The next step is to obtain proposals from architectural firms for the design of the expansion. The needs assessment findings showed that the Library should be twice its current size to meet the service needs of the community now and into the future. The only way to achieve the required expansion space of 10,000+ square feet is to make a two-story addition. The Library Board, staff members and Library Foundation (who will be paying for the design work from the chosen architect) are hopeful for a good number of design proposals and eager to see possible ideas for this expansion. It is the intent of the Library Board to be very up-front with Johnson County’s residents as this project moves forward. The Board is deeply committed to obtaining an expanded building that is compatible with the existing structure and the neighborhood in which it resides. The auction begins at 6 p.m. with the reception and silent auction, followed by the oral auction at 7:30 p.m. Attendees are encouraged to wear apparel appropriate to the 1920s era. Tickets are on sale at the library for $15 apiece. Brannian Auctions LLC will preside and the event will be catered by Sagewood Café. Proceeds will benefit current library needs, as well as the library’s endowment fund. For every $1 raised that goes into the endowment fund, the State of Wyoming will match that donation with $2. The Johnson County Library has received about $200,000 in private funds in the past four years, which earned the library $400,000 in state funding, along with a $100,000 incentive grant from the state, for a total of approximately $700,000 toward our $1 million goal. One of the highlights of the evening promises to be the auctioning of a one-of -a-kind gift donated by author Craig Johnson—a rough cut DVD of the pilot episode of the A&E series “Longmire” based on his award-winning Walt Longmire mysteries. It also includes a DVD of special features and a book of profiles of the main actors, all bound in a handsome leather case. The Friends of the Library will raffle off their “Fill Your Kitchen” basket that includes $200 for use at both local grocery stores, as well as all kinds of wine, cookbooks, gadgets and more. Raffle tickets are one for $1 and six for $5. Making plans for expansion

24 years ago. The moving of the collection from the Carnegie Library, across Fort Street is well documented. Over 100 volunteers formed a human chain and passed thousands of books from the old library, across Fort Street (closed by special permission from the State) and into the new library.

BEWARE OF THE BOOK

Take time on Tuesday, Oct. 16 to fill out a brief survey about library service for the annual Snapshot Day. Hundreds of libraries across the state will participate, and help show our Legislature how valuable libraries are to the people of Wyoming.

Congratulations to staff member Megan Herold, who earned her masters in library science from the University of North Texas in mid-August. She was one of a handful of Wyoming librarians who received a SWIM grant two years ago to fund the master’s degree process.

The Johnson County Library received the Agnes Milstead Award on Friday, Sept. 28 from the Wyoming Library Association for its Book Buddies program. Mary Rhoads and Steve Rzasa accepted the award at the annual conference in Casper. It honors a significant project or service which benefits children and/or teens.

Mary & Steve started Book Buddies last year as a way to have male volunteers read to third grade boys at Meadowlark Elementary School in Buffalo. The program was well received and has expanded this year to include girls. Volunteers will read to children every Tuesday and Wednesday.

The staff at Clear Creek Elementary School in Buffalo put on a book talk Tuesday, Aug. 28 for fourth and fifth grade students to promote the Indian Paintbrush recommended booklist.

Sponsored by the Wyoming Library Association and the Wyoming State Reading Council, the Indian Paintbrush Book Award provides the opportunity for Wyoming youth in grades 4 through 6 to select a favorite book and honor its author.

Over the past year, the teachers have worked together with Children’s Librarian Mary Rhoads to increase student interest in reading. Their presentations were aimed at further sparking student imagination and inspiring them to read these books.

The Johnson County Library provided a set of all 15 titles to CCES: 13 Treasures by Michelle Harrison; The Fourth Stall by Chris Rylander; Wonderstruck by Brian Selznick; A Long Walk to Water by Linda Sue Park ; Love, Aubrey by Suzanne LaFleur; Drizzle by Kathleen Van Cleve; Out of My Mind by Sharon Draper; Dead End in Norvelt by Jack Gantos; Powerless by Matthew Cody; Okay for Now by Gary Schmidt; Saving Zasha by Randy Barrow; Dog Lost by Ingrid Lee; Bull Rider by Suzanne Williams; The Flint Heart by Katherine and John Patterson; and Because of Mr. Terupt by Rob Buyea.
