The Franklin’s Tale

Page 2: Franklin's tale

During the Squire's Tale,

the Franklin interrupts in

a very polite way and

starts his own tale.

Page 3: Franklin's tale

Arveragus, a noble knight,

desires a wife, and finds

a woman named Dorigen

who is a beautiful

young maiden.

Page 4: Franklin's tale

When they get married,

they vow that they will

be honest to each other

and will always be

respectful of one

another.

However, soon Arveragus

gets called to battle

in England to fulfill

his knightly duties.

He leaves his wife

lonely and grieving.

Page 6: Franklin's tale

While her husband is

away,

Dorigen is invited to a dance

during a picnic.

Also in attendance is Aurelius,

who is young, wealthy, strong,

and handsome.

Page 8: Franklin's tale

Aurelius has secretly

loved Dorigen for two

years and tries to court

her.

Page 9: Franklin's tale

Dorigen says she will only marry him if he clears all of the rocks from the coast of Brittany.

Page 10: Franklin's tale

He becomes sick,

and his brother takes care of him

in his time of need.

Page 11: Franklin's tale

His brother remembers

encountering a

student-magician who could

read a book of magic

that is invisible.

Page 12: Franklin's tale

Aurelius returns to Dorigen

to tell her that all of the rocks

have been cleared.

She immediately

falls into despair,

as she thought it

was something he

could never do.

Page 13: Franklin's tale

However, after seeing that Dorigen is faithfully married to her husband, and seeing how noble Averagus is, he cannot force himself to be with Dorigen, and allows the couple to be together.
