How can we better prepare and grow the work of the Lord here at
Franklin Circle?
Through communion, Christ called us to recognize the needs of our
community around us and to share Christ’s abundance. Through
service, Christ showed us how to kindly demonstrate love, humility,
and grace. Through preaching and ministering, Christ showed us how
to share His Word with others and to call them to love the Lord and
each other.
Through those gifts of community, abundance, service, ministry, and
love, we grow and we allow others around us to grow and thrive.
Here at Franklin Circle, we help the homeless make it to tomorrow.
We help children find hope in the future, find new friends, and be
creative. We keep lonely feelings away and pray for physical and
spiritual healing. We have a place to celebrate life events and to
share the blessings of the Lord.
As you read this article, you may have already heard of our 2014-
2015 stewardship campaign, “From Bread and Wine to Faith and
Giving: a Journey into the Spiritual Discipline of Generosity Around
the Table of Jesus”.
This campaign was chosen by the Elders because it represents what
Franklin Circle is all about: loving God, loving our neighbors, and
bringing the example of Christ to Ohio City through service and
mission.
This campaign allows us to consider prayerfully how we can use our
resources over the next year and beyond to serve the work of the
Lord.
Also, as we consider the implementation of recommendations of our
Visioning Team, we can see the spiritual transformation that is going
on around us. This campaign allows us to expand that work into the
spiritual, volunteer, and financial ways we make the work of the Lord
possible.

fortunate here at Franklin Circle. First, we are a debt-free congregation. This is remarkable, and a
reason to praise the Lord! Many of our fellow churches struggle financially because of congrega-
tional debt.
Also, we must celebrate the fact we have a long term endowment. Many churches do not have the
kind of foresight that our members did many years ago. Because of their wisdom, they set a long
term future for Franklin Circle financially.
As our treasurer had written a couple of newsletters ago, we cannot be complacent. Christ chal-
lenged the first Disciples to think, plan and act in new and innovative ways. Today, Christ calls us to
imagine how we can change and grow our commitment to service, time, and financial growth to ad-
vance the work of the Lord here.
As you choose personally to add your gifts to this campaign, our stewardship efforts will have con-
crete, positive impacts. We cannot grow the mission work of Franklin Circle without you!
Please pray for God’s blessing on this campaign. Please pray to discern God’s will for your involve-
ment in this year’s campaign. And please commit a pledge to support the work of Franklin Circle.
Abundant Blessings,
Robert Horrocks

Welcome New Members!
We’ve had quite the “harvest” of new members the past few months, and we are grateful for the faith and confidence these wonderful folks have in God and in this church! Larry Yost reaffirmed his faith and joined our church at the outdoor worship service and picnic on August 24th. Leonard Carle reaffirmed his faith and joined our church on September 14th. Gust Riley reaffirmed his faith and joined our church on September 26th and LaShawnna Riley offered her confession of faith on September 26th and is preparing for her baptism here at FCCC. Tsunami Morgan reaffirmed her faith On September 26th. And, most recently, Kim Posanti reaffirmed her faith and joined on October 12th. Please add these good folks to your church directory:
We are excited to announce that we are having a potluck-style dinner for the Transforma-tion Sunday dinner to be held Sunday, November 16 following the worship service.
So many people came forward and indicated that we can honor the work of the Lord here at Franklin Circle Christian Church best by preparing and sharing the dinner ourselves. We are happy that so many people came forward to help – Praise the Lord!
We offer a list so people can prepare side dishes and desserts. If your last name is A-H, make a salad; if your last name is I-R, make a vegetable/side dish; and S-Z make a dessert. These are only suggestions, so bring what your heart calls you to. And do try to make enough for yourself and some guests! Chuck Mesrobian has agreed to cook baked chicken for the main dish and we will provide the drinks. Please consider what you will bring, because we want everyone to attend and enjoy the dinner.
Again, we are very happy and thankful that everyone has reached out and supported the stewardship campaign in this way. Please prayerfully consider your continued support of the cam-paign through your 2014-2015 pledge.
The Rev. Jim Schimmel preached at the 172nd Anniversary of North Eaton Christian Church on October 12 at both services. Reports were he was wonderful, as we well know! Caro-line Rubin is again a mentor for a fourth grade student at Dennison Elementary School. What a gift to our community! David Forst retired in October from 26 years in the Police Department of the greater Cleveland RTA. Lance Miner has a new job at Key Bank in their hospitality depart-ment. Pastor Allen attended the Homecoming Festivities at the Cleveland Christian Home on Oc-tober 11th. Kate Vincinquirra is the new Development Director there. We will be hearing more from Kate in the near future! Dennis McMillan Jr. officiated at the wedding of some coworkers here at Franklin Circle Christian church on October 11. On October 15th, Theresa Inman was awarded a "Lifesaver Award" at City Hall for her work as an EMD in Cleveland. Congratulations, Theresa! James McDermott (Dawn’s son, Hannah’s brother) played Edward in The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe at Bay Village High School in October.

Congregation-Wide Evangelism Event “From Our Doorstep To Yours!”
Saturday, November 22 from 9 a.m. – noon
The Evangelism & Publicity Team, always open to fun new ideas, is sending our congregation out into the community to get to know the neighbor-hood around the church and to offer an invitation to our church, particularly the events during Advent and Christmas. On Saturday, November 22, from 9 a.m. to noon we will be sent out to streets around Ohio City equipped with bags to hang on the doors of our neighbor’s homes and apartments. The bags will have flyers about events coming up, from our Thanksgiving Meal, to World AIDS Day, to our Christmas Concert, and especially our Christmas Eve Service at 7 p.m. on December 24th. We’ll even be including a packet of hot chocolate as a gift! There are other special gifts if the house seems to include children or pets. We will also offer a si-lent prayer for the residents of each home we visit.
This event is for the ENTIRE CONGREGATION! If you are excited about what is happening here at Franklin Circle Christian Church and want more people to experience it, then come join us!
It has been a busy, and expensive, summer for the upkeep team! When a panel from the sanctuary ceiling fell earlier in the year, the Trustees reviewed half a dozen bids to repair the damage and prevent other panels from doing the same. Frost Con-struction was awarded the contract for two reasons: they were the low bid and be-cause they ALWAYS give us more than we pay for. Some $57,000 later, the ceiling is absolutely beautiful. No more tan water stains. No more areas where the paint has chipped off. Next time you join us, look up and see what your gifts to the church helped to accomplish.
In the spring, a list of projects that needed volunteers was printed in the Messenger and quite a few of you took up the challenge. Lanni, Barb, and Kevin set up the scaffold and scraped and painted the windows of the office. Allan Brown scraped and painted the windows of the ladies room and tool room. Caroline has spent a day or two every week painstakingly wire brushing and painting the fire escape—a much bigger job than anyone thought! Colleen and the youth group are in the process of painting the gym bathrooms. Claire and the Library Team are getting ready to paint the new library. Al Betts and a team of volunteers from Chagrin Falls High School emptied out the new archive room, brought in file cabinets, and moved around the tables before reloading it with 170 years of history. There were so many, and they worked so fast, that they had time to load a dumpster with stuff that has been accumulating on the 3rd floor.
Kim Posanti has officially joined the Upkeep Team and we could not be more thrilled. She brings many skills to the team and we can’t wait to get her on some projects!
Our most sincere apologies if we have failed to thank YOU for your help to the team!

Support our students so they can Come Home to a Disciples of Christ Institution!
Your gift to the Thanksgiving Offering, to be received on November 23 and 30, helps under-write the education of students attending our 14 member undergraduate institutions and our 7 seminaries or divinity houses. You are helping ensure that when students from your congregation go away to study they will Come Home to a Disciples institution.
Coming home to a Disciples College or Theological School is possible through the scholar-ships and grants that are made available by generous individuals, the Disciples Mission Fund and your gifts to the Thanksgiving Offering. Together, we can make coming home to Disciples educa-tional institutions more affordable. For generations, thousands of students have attended the Col-leges and Universities of the Christian Church—receiving both a quality education and the opportu-nity to remain within our Disciple’s heritage. The Thanksgiving Offering helps continue this tradi-tion.

Faithfully Working Towards The Future At the September 28th and October 26th meetings of the Official Church Board
of Franklin Circle Christian Church, the Elders, Deacons, Trustees, Officers, and Team Leaders of our congregation received and discussed the report from the New Visioning Team. After over a year and a half of hard and faithful work, a “Big Vision” and eleven more specific recommendations, along with a host of ideas, suggestions, and supportive ma-terial were offered to the Board. After some deliberation, lead by our Board Chair, David Muich, and a few modifications, the Visioning Team’s report was received and the “Big Vision” and 11 recommenda-tions were voted on and approved. Now the hard work begins! There will be several occasions for the congregation to be brought on board with our plan for the future, including some votes that will be necessary, but I thought I would give you a quick “snapshot” of what was approved. First and foremost the current mission statement of Franklin Circle Christian Church and our place in this diverse community in our historic buildings were resoundingly reaffirmed. This is both a thing to rejoice as well as a huge challenge. The document also celebrates what is happening in our section of Ohio City and calls for our church, with its unique values of diversity, hospitality, and ser-vice, to become a “hub” of the “circle” and take a greater lead in shaping the changes that are going to occur in the coming months and years.
Of course, in order to have this kind of influence, our church will need to grow in membership and in financial security, and several goals are set for these important developments of our congregation, es-pecially the preservation of our rich and wonderful diversity! And finally, the “Big Vision” caps off with a commitment to being a “true community”, with a “deep spirituality” and a “passion for justice” through a greater emphasis on leadership development, empowerment, and support.
The recommendations that follow cover everything from building greater trust, focusing more on new member involvement, broadening our commitments to more issues of justice and sustainability, shaping our ministries to include more focus on single parents, to creating a Hospitality Team and im-proving our building to be more hospitable! Each proposal will be looked at by all the staff, teams, and boards of the congregation in order to make real and practical changes to reimagine our community of faith as a viable, responsive, and forward thinking church in the 21st Century.
If you would like a copy of the approved document, it is available to all, just contact me or the church office. And as I mentioned, there will be an event, most likely just after the new year, to festively and formally introduce the vision and recommendations to the congregation and community. Until then, I as your Pastor, and the Official Board ask for your prayerful support as we seek to grow this congrega-tion into the amazing church of the future that God envisions for us. Gratefully Your Pastor, Allen
We Mourn The Death Of:
Jessie Lavander (Diane Howard’s cousin) died Tuesday, October 14.
Hospitality For Community Events
As part of the Visioning in which our congregation engaged over the past year and a half, we identified one of our most significant communal gifts to be that of hospitality. Likewise, our Big Vision talks about our church be-ing at the hub of the developments happening just north of our facilities so that our values of diversity, inclusiveness, and hospitality are part of the con-versations and decision-making.
It is in this light that we are called to take advantage of every opportu-nity we have to share the ministry of hospitality every chance we get, espe-cially when the community comes right into our building. There are two such events coming up:
November 4th
is General Election Day. Volunteers are needed to be here to greet hun-dreds of voters as they arrive and wish them well as they depart. We may even offer refreshments if we have enough volunteers! Polls are open from 6:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m.
November 11th
is the regular Community Meeting hosted by Ohio City, Inc. This is a great opportunity not only to meet our neighbors around the church, but to learn about what is hap-pening in our community. Pastor Allen and our custodian, Monique, and Beverly Wurm, our Facili-ties Coordinator are always present, and occasionally a few church folks, but this is a prime place for us to interact with those who live right around the church and provide hospitality for them. OCI provides some refreshments, but we could augment that, and perhaps offer additional services (child care, tours before or after of the church, an information table…).
Please let Pastor Allen know if you can help with either of these and what times you are available, by e-mailing him at [email protected] or calling 216-781-8232 and leaving a voicemail for him.
Forum To Explore Music That Makes For Peace The multi-media presentation will explore the power of mu-sic, both to help make our lives more peaceful, as well as to in-
spire us to work for peace and justice in our world. From ancient music of the medieval abbeys to modern music by Aaron Copeland—from Simon & Garfunkel to Mumford and Sons, those gathered will share music that brings peace and harmony to the soul. In the second half of the presentation, musicians as diverse as Tracey Chapman, Helen Reddy, John Legend, and Garth Brooks will illus-trate how music has inspired generations to move from reflection to action in order to address the great injustices of our lives. As with all Widening The Circle Forums, the presentation is free and will include refresh-ments. Childcare is available if requested at least one week prior to the forum. For more informa-tion please call Pastor Allen at the church office at 216-781-8232 or via e-mail at [email protected]. All are welcome, and friends and coworkers are especially invited!
Near West Theatre Presents Jesus Christ Superstar November 21 through December 7
FC3 Evening – Friday, December 5 – Get Your Tickets Early!!!
This fall, in 2014, Near West Theatre will be between homes. They left the St. Patrick’s Club Building in June, and their new $7.3 million theater in the Gordon Square Arts district is not quite completed. But they’re still doing shows! They are thrilled to announce an explosive produc-tion of one of the most popular musicals of all time, Jesus Christ Superstar, presented in the his-toric West Side United Church of Christ, located at – well, at West 38th Street and Bridge Avenue, Cleveland. Does that sound familiar? It should! It’s literally across the street from their old St. Pat’s home of 3 ½ decades. For three weekends in November and December, and for rehearsals all fall, the people of West Side UCC are opening their beautiful church to Near West Theatre. They will transform this space of stained glass and intricate wood carving into a theatrical rock venue.
Jesus Christ Superstar, the king of rock operas, was created at the end of the turbulent ‘60s with a social and political rebel at its center. Jesus’ meteoric rise to fame provides, as the title sug-gests, a parallel to contemporary celebrity worship. Judas sings, “If you strip away the myth from the man, you can see where we all soon will be,” prophesying centuries of controversy that would surround this one man, his life and his identity. Propelled by a stirring score that is driving and ma-jestic, satirical and tender, JCS illuminates the transcendent power of the human spirit. This show startles the mind with its relevance and social implications.
It is sure to sell out! Their production will feature a large cast of children, teens and adults. Experience the convergence of lead guitar, pipe organ, pews, passion, percussion and provoca-tion. Lyrics by Tim Rice & music by Andrew Lloyd Webber
