The Biomuseo, the innovative biodiversity museum designed by starchitect Frank Gehry, has finallyopened today in Panama after a ten-year-long construction period. The building's colorful origami-like canopies were designed in reference to the richly diverse flora and fauna of Panama, one ofthe most biodiverse places in the world. The high-profile museum is Gehry's first project in LatinAmerica.

As if its multicolored facade wasn’t eye-catching enough, the Biomuseo is prominently sited on thehighly visible Amador Causeway at the Pacific mouth of the Panama Canal. The 44,132-square-footbuilding will serve as a major civic and educational resource for the residents of Panama, as wellas an attractive tourist destination. The museum houses a series of permanent exhibitions createdby Bruce Mau Design and is surrounded by a new 6-acre Biodiversity Park designed by Gehry incollaboration with landscape designer Edwina von Gal.

Gehry centered the Biomuseo on a public open-air atrium covered by a sequence of multicoloredmetal canopies, each folded and staggered to evoke Panama’s local vernacular of tin roofs andcolorful facades. The origami-like roofs also help protect the interior from the region’s wet-seasondownpour and wind gusts. A museum store, cafe, and a temporary exhibition space branch outfrom the central atrium.

The Biomuseo’s main and permanent exhibition is titled ‘Panama: Bridge of Life,’ which unfoldsacross eight galleries, five of which are fully installed. The galleries use a mix of digital projections, acoustics, arts, and interpretative signage to tell the story of Panama’s biodiversity and history. Theexhibition narrative extends into the Biodiversity Park, which also offers educational opportunities.

Disappointing to say the least!

Pretty building, but full of Coruption, Nepotismo and over cost, a refletion of thepanama culture a country of cousing and family, with the Smithsonian taking hispece of cake

I am so psyched!! I am a native of Panama living in the US. My family and I will bevisiting Panama in 2015 and I am definitely going to visit this museum. Gehry is agenius. He makes architecture come alive. By the way, Jean… I am not sure whatyou mean by saying that this is awful? Are you talking about the building itself or itslocation?

OMG, isn’t it wonderful and awful at the same time? An upscale barrio. The buildingblocks of a genius. The only Gehry building I’ve been in is the one on the CaseWestern Reserve University, and that one’s controversial, to say the least. Whatever,Gehry is a master of innovative design.
