74 Chapter 5 Fracture toughness characterization of ductile phase containing in-situ BMG composite Fracture toughness of ductile phase containing in-situ BMG composites is studied. Unlike monolithic BMG’s, the composites show stable crack growth and crack arrest. Increasing the volume fraction of ductile dendrite phase with fully developed microstructure, produced by semi- solid processing, increases the amount of energy needed to advance pre-existing cracks. Although a standard evaluation of fracture toughness is not available at this point, due to sample geometry limitations, J-R curve evaluation of the composite reveals significant improvements in fracture toughness, having values that may exceed 136 MPa⋅m 1/2 .
