SCOPEThe impact test is one of the most importantmechanical tests on a material and serves to establishan understanding of the applicable enduseconditions.End-use refers to the performance of the finishedproduct or component and not the basic resin pellet. In particular, among the destructive mechanicalcharacterizations of plastic products, the response ofthe component to impact conditions is just one of theseveral considerations to determine material behaviour

and engineering application. To perform impact tests with an energy rate higherthan that obtainable using the pendulum, to breakdifferent specimen shapes or finished products, a dropweight instrument is necessary. Therefore Ceast, leading the design of impact testinstruments for fifty years, has improved its line ofsturdy and flexible dart drop testers with the newFractovis Plus.

    FIELDS OF APPLICATION

The new Fractovis Plus can perform : Coupon tests in order to carry out Charpy, Izod and

    Tensile Impact tests

Biaxial impact tests on films, sheets, plates and pipesin accordance with the standards

Component tests and impact tests on finishedproducts (glass, helmets, bumpers, etc.) as thecomponent design and the shape can influence thebrittle or ductile performance of the material

Non-instrumented and instrumented impact tests onspecimens of different materials (polymers, ceramics

    and composites).

NEW CONCEPT OF MODULARITY A main novelty of the Fractovis Plus is the Upgradeconcept. In fact the instrument is pre-wired for easyconnection of all options at a later date.

STANDARDSDesigned and built to meet the following standards:

    ISO 179-2, ISO 180, ISO 3127, ISO 6603-1, ISO 6603-2,ISO 7765-1, ISO 7765-2, ASTM D 256, ASTM D 2444, ASTM D 3763, ASTM D 5628, ASTM D 6110, ASTM E 23and others equivalent.

BASIC FEATURESCeast instruments are characterized by their versatilityand their user-friendly interface. The Fractovis Plus improves the user-machine

interface in terms of simplicity with the new control panelso that the operator can manage the instrument toperform tests without any PC. This panel, equipped witha LC display and a soft-touch keyboard, provides instantaccess to the most widely used impact testing functions, including start/stop and reset drop position. The test execution is fully automatic controlled bymicroprocessor. It is possible to run an Autochecksequence at any time to check the instrument. Allcalibration parameters can be edited using the keyboard. The speed detection system, in order to record thestriker speed just before the impact event, and thespecimen clamping system, in order to clamp, automatically, rigid plastic specimens, are basic featuresof all the Fractovis Plus line.Fractovis Plus offers also different types of strikers.

    STRIKERS

    Example of Instrumented test curves

POSSIBILITY TO CHOOSE LOAD CELL SENSOR

Statistical elaboration example of Non-Instrumentedtest according to ISO 6603-1 method B

A variety of interchangeable strikers available to meetstandard test specifications and custom applications

NON-INSTRUMENTED TESTNon-instrumented impact tests are able to provideinformation on the quality behaviour of the materialunder the impact of a striker applied on the specimen.

INSTRUMENTED TESTInstrumented impact tests provide full details of theimpact event, from initial contact to final failure of thespecimen by recording the force/time curve of theentire impact event.Instrumented impact technology is able to provide avalid method to evaluate the fracture toughness of amaterial; in fact, in accordance with linear elastic fracturemechanics and elastic-plastic fracture mechanics, it ispossible to evaluate the energy release rate, respectively

GIC and J c, intrinsic property of a material, whichprovides the most meaningful data to be used in thedesign of real components.

    Strain gauge striker Piezoelectric striker

SAFEDue to the high energy involved during a test, Ceasthas taken particular care of the safety features withinthe Fractovis. Micro-switches and protective circuitsensure that the operator performs the test in totally safeconditions. The instrument is built to comply with CEsafety directives.

    SOFTWARE FOR INSTRUMENTEDIMPACT TESTS

Using the latest generation of Ceast Data Acquisition System,DAS 8000, instrumented strikers and dedicated software,

D8EXTWIN, it is possible to generate the force/time curve ofany impact event.Below are listed Ceast software options to be used withFractovis Plus for easy management of instrumented testsand for their advanced elaboration:D8EXTWINmain module to manage instrumented impacttests and to analyze the resultsWLEFMHRto determine the stress intensity factor (K IC ) andthe energy release rate (G IC ) at high test speedD8WFILTto analyze and eliminate plastic oscillation due toresonance vibrationsD8WTTAto analyze impact test results performed atdifferent temperatures in order to evaluate the fragility indexDAS8CLWto perform instrumented striker static calibration.

WLEFMHR MODULE Advanced software has been developed by Ceast R&Ddepartment in order to allow further analysis of instrumentedimpact results: WLEFMHR.This software can be considered as a tool for the evaluationof data that can be used for design applications. It is based upon a testing procedure developed by ESIS(European Structural Integrity society) TC4. A three point

bending (SENB) specimen configuration, with a very acutenotch, like a crack, is required for the test. The software isable to provide, automatically, the value of K IC (stressintensity factor) and G IC (energy release rate) elaborating theimpact test results and provides, for R&D departments andinstitutes, an important tool for advanced analysis.
