Proposed Water FJK Projects to Rotary International∎ Purpose

• Provide Safe Water to meet the operational needs of a Community Sickle Cell Clinic, Bawum, Bafut, Cameroon.

∎ Impact• Provide water supply to a clinic that serves over 1,000

families who receive services each year.

What is Sickle Cell Disease∎ An inherited blood disorder.∎ Has no cure.∎ Can be managed for affected persons to live a normal live.∎ Estimated 7,000 children are born with the condition in Cameroon each year.∎ About 25% will die before the age of five undiagnosed.


Sickle Cell Disease in Cameroon

∎ Common occurrence in Cameroon that has not received attention of Health Officials like malaria, HIV/AIDS and non-communicable diseases.∎ Established protocols for diagnosis, prevention and management are lacking.∎ No health promotion programs to bring awareness.∎ No structured program or dedicated infrastructure to address affected persons’ needs.Fr John Kolkman (FJK) Sickle Cell Foundation, in 2010, was established to address the needs of the affected communities.

Project DescriptionAn erected 450 square meters facility to serve about 1,000 families per year needswater to be functional.

∎ A well be constructed in the clinic site about 20 m from the building. Water from the well will be pumped into a two high level tanks (5,000 liters each – similar to the picture) for distribution to the clinic and two distribution points.∎ A hydrologic study of the area has been conducted that shows the drought water table at 31 m with a water yield of 1.3 cubic meters per hour, enough to meet clinic needs.∎ The water system will powered by Rural Power Systems of California. ∎ ∎ The Sickle Cell Clinic to serve over 1,000 families a years comprises:• five (5) Exam rooms (5)• Conference room (seminars, workshops and support meetings)• 2 pain management and counseling units• 4 bathrooms & 2 shower rooms• Pharmacy (dispensing room)• Reception/registration area∎ Future expansion of the Sickle Cell Center to include a cafeteria, guest

house, a library, and admission unit will utilize the water system.∎ The total project is estimated at $10,000 USD. FJK Foundation is requesting $8,000 from Rotary Club Internationl
