The Tenth Sunday in Ordinary Time

June 10, 2018

Dear Parishioners and Friends:

“Who are my mother and my brothers?” And looking around at

those seated in the circle he said, “Here are my mother and my

brothers. For whoever does the will of God is my brother and

sister and mother.” [Mark 3: 33-35]

I bet that Mary, standing outside, trying to get word to Jesus to come out, was not thrilled when she heard this! This scene makes outsiders of Jesus’ family and insiders of his followers. What is Jesus (in the gospel of Mark) trying to do? Just before this Sun-day’s gospel passage, Jesus chose twelve disciples to do what he does: to proclaim his message of God’s reign and to cast out de-mons. Jesus is gathering a new family of faith. What Jesus said indicates the radical message of his teaching: those who do the will of his father belong to his family. His new definition of fami-ly includes those strangers sitting in the crowd who buy in to his teaching as well as his disciples and maybe blood kin, even the scribes, Pharisees and seekers. This is the meaning of the ancient axiom: “Water is thicker than blood.” It means that water of Bap-tism and the relationship shared by mutual obedience to God’s Word is more powerful than the claims of blood ties.

In a world divided by political rivalry, national, racial and ethnic prejudices, this is a RADICAL claim. Our obedience to God’s Word takes away our right to most of our political squab-bling and tribal feuding. If it does not, those involved are not be-having as Christians.

Questions for the week: When have you appreciated other Catholics as your brothers and sisters? When have you claimed a family closeness with someone who is not Christian? What opened you to them as a fellow child of God?

I will be departing this Thursday, June 14 for a two-week vaca-tion. Fr. Healy is looking forward to visiting with you on Father’s Day weekend. Please take some time to celebrate Dad! I will do the same with my father in Smyrna.

Queridos Feligreses y Amigos:

“¿Quién es mi madre y mis hermanos?” Y mirando alrededor a

“See you in September …!!??” We know that everyone needs to enjoy some time away and vacations can be holy times of refreshment and renewal for our families. But PLEASE, remember your parish family in your faithful

tithes through the summer months because we still have to pay for the electricity and functioning of buildings even while we are away at play.

BAA: The Bishop’s Annual Appeal has gone quite well so far this year as we are way ahead of schedule

at 87% of our target BUT there are 2 dozen parish-ioners who gave last year and gave zero/nothing this year. However humble, please, please support our

mother Church and send in your pledge this week. I will be mailing out letters to those who have not this week. FB

No impor-

FB

The Word Among Us: A vibrant understanding of the Eucharist requires some effort on our part. You are invited to pick up one of the special daily missals called “The Word Among Us” that are on the table in the church vestibule. If you cannot afford the $2 to put in the envelop, then take one anyway, and pray through it each day this month so that you can feed on God’s Word and recognize his presence in the Eu-charist when you come to church.

which our whole community renews our own conver-sion so as to provide an example that will help the catechumens to obey the Holy Spirit more generous-

Parish Mission Prayer

Father of Mercy, your Holy Spirit has called us from many lands and cultures to become the faith community of St. Joseph Parish. You gather us to proclaim your Word of Mercy for all through prayer, sacrament, and service. O Holy one show us how to nourish this commitment through faith formation, hospitality, and stewardship, so that through us your com-passion may embrace the cross of all the needy, through Christ our Lord. Amen
