1. Introduction

In the year 2150, 70% of the lands in world are drowned in waters. The human

population is decreasing every day. All humans on Earth now have to go on

with life with only 30% of land left. As a mayor of a city within the 30% of land

left, I have now decided to save the human population by building a new

city where all humans can leave in peace with every they need in a city.

The city I am going to create will be called the Circle of Life. The Circle of Life

uses part of the remaining land left to save the human species. The Circle of

Life is a specially shaped and a perfect circle, which has a city in it. The Circle

of Life will prevent any excess water to wipe out the city. There will definitely

still be land left with the Circle of Life.

This report will include everything about what is a city, examples of past cities,

present cities and future cities. These investigations will help in the planning of

the Circle of Life. Last but not least, the report will explore about the Circle of

Life, explaining about the contents of the city as well as the plans of the city.

1. The City

What is a city?

A city is defined as a center of population, commerce and culture. It is a

town of significant size and and importance.

History of cities

Cities have developed as early as 4th millennium BC. The first city ever to be

existed in the world is the city of Uruk, which is a Mesopotamian city. The

Indus Valley Civilization and ancient China are two other areas with major

indigenous urban traditions. The Indus Valley Civilization is one of the most

developed ancient cities, with buildings built with bricks, roads to split

buildings and other elements of a city in the present-day. Elements such as

authorities and governance, technology, arts and crafts, transportation, and

religious buildings are part of elements in the Indus Valley Civilization.

What makes a city and a good city?

A basic element that must be found in a city is the zoning of the city. Zoning

such as government buildings, business area, commercial areas, recreational

areas, educational areas, religious and cultural areas, hospitals, services

areas, industrial areas, residencies, community area and etc. A good city is

made up with a good zoning of the city, and a system. What makes a good

city should be a green and sustainable city. A good city must know the

smartest way for waste management, using environmental friendly items such

as fuels, plastic bags and containers. Public transportation is also one of the

most important elements to make a good city. Public transportation must be

safe, efficient, and environmental friendly.

What is a future city?

A future city is a city that shows drastic changes in every aspect compared

to the present city. It is just like how present cities show drastic changes

compared to ancient cities over a period of centuries. An example of the

aspects that changes in an ancient city to a present city is the architecture,

the services, amenities as well as technologies.

2. Investigation & Data Collection: Ancient City

Mohenjo Daro

Mohenjo Daro is one of the earliest cities to exist. It is one of the largest settlements of the ancient Indus Valley Civilization. It is located in Sindh, Pakistan and it was built around 2600 BCE. Mohenjo Daro was abandoned in the 19th century BCE.

Mohenjo Daro has a planned layout based on a street grid. Mohenjo Daro is one of the first settlements to use bricks to built buildings. It is considered an ordered urban layout due to straight roads separating the buildings. The city is divided into two parts, the Citadel and the Lower City. Mohenjo Daro is the first city in the world to implement a sewage system. The city also has public baths a large residential structure designed to house about 5,000 citizens,

and two large assembly halls. The city has a marketplace with a large well where citizens can obtain water for usage in their homes.

The element of the Mohenjo Daro that will be implemented in the Circle of Life is the marketplace. Citizens of the Circle of Life can purchase goods such as food and home items.

Investigation & Data Collection:

Present City Kuala Lumpur

Kuala Lumpur is the capital city of Malaysia. It is located in the heart of Klang Valley and it is the most populous city in Malaysia. Kuala Lumpur was established in 1859, originally founded by the Malay Chief of Klang, Raja Abdullah. In 1881, a flood swept through the city, following a fire that engulfed it earlier. Yap Ah Loy, the Chinese Kapitan was the father of modern Kuala Lumpur. Yap Ah Loy brought a sprawling piece of real estate for the setting up of a brick industry which would spur the rebuilding of Kuala Lumpur. Yap Ah Loy successfully redeveloped Kuala Lumpur in the 1890s. Kuala Lumpur was originally only called a town until 1st February 1972, where it was finally granted the 'city' status.

The elements of a city that are found in Kuala Lumpur is the governance, hospitality and tourism, retail, parks, sports and recreation, the culture, transportation, skyscrapers and etc. An element of a city that makes Kuala Lumpur stand out is the retail. Kuala Lumpur is well known for its shopping malls such as Mid Valley, which is one of the largest shopping mall in the world, Pavilion, Suria KLCC and many more. It is also home to one of the most famous skyscraper in the world, the Petronas Twin Towers. Kuala Lumpur has also various education areas. It has many schools, from primary to secondary as well as many colleges and institutes.

The element of Kuala Lumpur that will be used in the Circle of Life is the shopping malls. It will be included in the commercial area of the city.

4. Investigation & Data Collection:

Future Cities LUSAIL, QATAR

Lusail is the newest planned city in Qatar. It is located about 15 kilometers north of the city of Doha,  just north of the West Bay Lagoon, on over 35 km² and will eventually provide accommodation for up to 260,000 people.

The city will have marinas, luxurious residential areas, island resorts, commercial districts, luxury shopping centres, and leisure facilities such as golf courses. It will also include an all giraffe zoo, and an entertainment district. The city of Lusail is also well known for the future football stadium, the Lusail Iconic Stadium, where the 2022 FIFA World Cup Opening and Final matches will be held. The city is expected to complete in the year 2020.

The element to be used in the Circle of Life from the inspiration of the Lusail city in Qatar is the football stadium. The football stadium has the potential to bring all the citizens of the Circle of Life together and watch various football matches.

4. Case study on the selected type of the future city

Green Sea Star, Maldives

The Green Sea Star is located off the coast of Madlives. It is an island shaped like a star. It is considered a floating hotel and a conference centre. The island nation is the world's lowest-lying country, making it among the most threatened by anticipated climate change-induced sea level rise.

Designed by Waterstudio.NL to blend in with its ocean surroundings, the Greenstar will have room for 800 overnight guests and 2,000 conference attendees.

Intended to be highly efficient, the development's small environmental footprint is a tribute to the country's determination to fight global warming, according to Waterstudio.NL architects. Appropriately enough, organizers intend the Greenstar to be the number one meeting place for global climate change discussions.

Page 12: Fp part a - report template

12

The tiny island nation of the Maldives is under serious threat from rising sea levels caused by climate change. No part of the 1200 islands which make up the Maldives is more than six feet above sea level, so as sea-levels rise (as they will if rampant climate change is not stopped), the entire nation will be under water. Because of this, the Maldives government is pulling out all the stops in the fight against climate change. Not only has the entire country gone carbon neutral, educated all of their children in environmental science and furiously built retaining walls around every island, but the government is buying up land in nearby nations as a place to retreat to when the Maldives disappears. Now it appears that the intrepid Maldivians have come up with a new strategy to fight the rising tide: creating mini floating islands!

The Maldives government and Dutch Docklands/Dutch Watervalley just signed an agreement today to develop several floating facilities for the islands, including a convention center and golf courses. Designed by architect Koen Olthuis of Waterstudio.NL, the people who brought you the Citadel floating apartment complex and these amazing floating homes, the renderings for the amphibious mini-cities appear depict star-shaped, tiered islands with indoor spaces hidden under lush green-roof terraces, complete with interior pools and beaches.

5. The Circle of Life The Circle of Life is the city with the only hope left to save the human population. Over decades, seawater has been wiping out countries and lands in the world. Now it's the year 2025, scientists have come to estimate that the entire land in the world could be totally drowned in water by the year 2030. The people in the world still surviving have only five years to save themselves from being extinct. Now they only have limited amount of food source and energy source and of course, a limited time.

As a mayor of Springfield, I shall build a new city to save the citizens of Springfield and not only them, but also every living species in the world with 30% of land remaining. The city will be built on the biggest land left in the world, which is 10000 acres of land that takes up 28.5% of the remaining land left.

The city will consist of everything that a city should have, from residential areas to commercial areas to business areas to hospitals to education areas to industrial area and many more. Moreover, the city will also emphasise on green and sustainable landscapes. The city will also implement new technology and also create environmental friendly products for a better future.

BASIC INFORMATION

Shape of the city: Round shape. This is to conserve space in the city for more buildings and other amenities. It is also to make the city look organised and ordered.

Size of the city: Approximately 10000 acres. The city will use up 28.5% of the remaining land as the land is big enough to build a new city.

Structure and layout of the city: The city is supported only by land, as it is located beside the sea. The city will be divided into parts such as the residential areas, the commercial areas, the recreational areas, the service areas etc. to make exploration of the city better and to get from one place to another without getting lost. The street division is inspired by the current street layout of the present-day Paris, France. The streets are connected together and they meet at one point. Just like the Arc de Triomphe, which is the centre connecting all the streets in Paris.

14

The streets will be divided and connected to a centre, this idea is inspired by the street layout in Paris, where 12 streets acts as a radius and connects to the centre, the centre being the Arc de Triomphe.

ZONING OF THE CITY

The circle shape of the city will be divided into several zones. The expected total number of zones is 10 zones. These 10 zones include:

• Residential zone: Houses and condominiums will be built in this zone.

• Education zone: Schools, colleges and universities will be built in this zone.

• Services zone: Hospitals, police stations, military base, telecommunication buildings, factories, banks etc. will be built in this zone.

• Hospitality and tourism zone: Hotels and an airport will be built in this zone.

• Energy zone: Water dams, electricity cables and power houses will be built in this zone.

• Commercial zone: Malls, markets, shops and restaurants will be built in this zone.

• Sports and Recreational zone: A clubhouse, a racing track, and a football stadium will be built in this zone.

15

• Transportation zone: Jetties, ports, public transportation hubs will be built in this zone.

• Business zone: Offices and business buildings will be built in this zone.

• Governance zone: Authority and government buildings, high courts, prison, and The Dome House (the mayor's office) will be built in this zone.

• Central zone: The centrepoint of the Circle of Life where the street meets. The town hall is located that the centrepoint.

Conclusion To conclude everything about the Circle of Life, the Circle of Life is surely the only hope left to save the human population from becoming extinct. The city has everything needed for survival and the continuation of life.

After the research and planning that I have done for my future city, I have learnt about the basic elements that every city must have. I have also learnt on sustainable approaches to make a city a better city. Some of the sustainable approaches include making all buildings in the city to have a green roof, focus on environmentally friendly products and services as well as looking for renewable source of energy and convert the energy for everyday use.
