• If you are new to Grace Cathedral, please introduce yourself and fill out a welcome card so we can be in touch with you. We’re glad you’re here!
• Join us for coffee and conversation across the plaza in the Chapter House Library after the 8:30 a.m. service or in the Gym after the 11 a.m. service.
Welcome to this sacred house of prayer for all people. Those who built this place and care for it love tradition and feel passionate about engaging with what is new. If you look closely you will find images of scientists, reformers, Jewish rabbis and Roman Catholic popes, political leaders, saints, and even an astronaut. We invite you to be part of this joyful community even if your visit is short. You might ask yourself two questions: “What do I need to receive? What do I have to give?” We would be delighted to hear about your explorations. May God bless you on your journey!
– The Very Rev. Dr. Malcolm Clemens Young, Dean of Grace Cathedral
Welcome to Grace Cathedral
about today’s readings Isaiah 7:10-16; Psalm 80:1-7, 16-18; Romans 1:1-7; Matthew 1:18-25Reading texts can be found at the end of the service leaflet.
The uncanniness of the Isaiah prophecy grips us: how did he know what would happen so many years in the future? And what did Isaiah himself make of this sign: a young woman (not explicitly identified as a virgin) who will conceive a son called Immanuel or God-with-us?
This uncanniness continues into our Gospel reading from Matthew. Joseph, an honorable man, is perplexed and troubled by finding young Mary with child before they have lived together. Described as a “righteous man”, Joseph is reluctant to expose her to public disgrace and resolved to dismiss her quietly. Just as he made ready to enact his plan, the angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream. Isaiah foretold a sign. The sign is coming to pass through a dream.
We are all familiar with dreams. They serve as portals into our own unconscious—what lies beneath awareness. They sometimes serve as visitations from those we love who have passed on. Sometimes dreams serve as warnings or come with news of our own hidden fears.
Joseph awakens from his dream telling him of the Son conceived by the Holy Spirit. He takes this news as a message from God through the angel and accepts Mary as his wife. His trust and confidence in the truth of his dream is the message of the fourth Sunday of Advent--the message to Joseph and now to us.

All We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen.
We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father. !rough him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven:
by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made man.
For our sake he was cruci"ed under Pontius Pilate; he su#ered death and was buried.
On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end.
We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son. With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glori"ed. He has spoken through the Prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

Choir Joseph was an old man and an old man was he, when he wedded Mary, in the land of Galilee. Joseph and Mary walked through an orchard good, where was cherries and berries, so red as any blood. O then bespoke Mary, so meek and oh, so mild: 'Pluck me one cherry, Joseph, for I am with child.' O then bespoke Joseph, with words most unkind: 'Let him pluck thee a cherry that brought thee with child.' O then bespoke the baby, within his mother's womb: 'Bow down then the tallest tree, for my mother to have some.' )en bowed down the highest tree unto his mother's hand; )en she cried, 'See, Joseph, I have cherries at command.' O then bespoke Joseph: 'I have done Mary wrong; But cheer up, my dearest, and be ye not cast down.' )en Mary plucked a cherry, as red as any blood; then Mary she went homewards all with her heavy load.

or the Wine, simply cross your arms over your chest and respond “Amen” when it is presented.
Ministers are available for shared prayer for healing in the AIDS Interfaith Chapel at the rear of the cathedral.

Again the Lord spoke to Ahaz, saying, “Ask a sign of the Lord your God; let it be deep as Sheol or
high as heaven.” But Ahaz said, “I will not ask, and I will not put the Lord to the test.” Then Isaiah said: “Hear then, O house of David! Is it too little for you to weary mortals, that you weary my God also? Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign. Look, the young woman is with child and shall bear a son, and shall name him Immanuel. He shall eat curds and honey by the time he knows how to refuse the evil and choose the good. For before the child knows how to refuse the evil and choose the good, the land before whose two kings you are in dread will be deserted.”

Paul, a servant of Jesus Christ, called to be an apostle, set apart for the gospel of God, which
he promised beforehand through his prophets in the holy scriptures, the gospel concerning his Son, who was descended from David according to the f lesh and was declared to be Son of God with power according to the spirit of holiness by resurrection from the dead, Jesus Christ our Lord, through whom we have received grace and apostleship to bring about the obedience of faith among all the Gentiles for the sake of his name,
including yourselves who are called to belong to Jesus Christ, To all God’s beloved in Rome, who are called to be saints: Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.

Now the birth of Jesus the Messiah took place in this way. When his mother Mary had been
engaged to Joseph, but before they lived together, she was found to be with child from the Holy Spirit. Her husband Joseph, being a righteous man and unwilling to expose her to public disgrace, planned to dismiss her quietly. But just when he had resolved to do this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, “Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary as your wife, for the child conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. She will bear a son, and you are to name him Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins.” All this took place to fulfill what had been spoken by the Lord through the prophet: “Look, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and they shall name him Emmanuel,” which means, “God is with us.” When Joseph awoke from sleep, he did as the angel of the Lord commanded him; he took her as his wife, but had no marital relations with her until she had borne a son; and he named him Jesus.

See the “luminous path” created by our 2016 Artists in Residence. Composed of LED lights rising 50 feet high, the illuminated rungs act as a fragmented screen for moving images of figures that ascend and descend the ladder, some climbing arduously, others gliding effortlessly. The installation references not just the famous Bible story, but also the cathedral’s theme for 2016, “Home,” illustrating the ethereal connection between our earthly home and our heavenly one.
