Pastoral Scene LITURGY SCHEDULE

Wise Men See God in the Simple Things:

If you’re on social media, you have probably seen a meme going around that features this quote: “God has a plan for your life. The enemy has a plan for your life, be ready for both. Just be wise enough to know which one to battle and which one to embrace.” There were cer-tainly two competing plans for the Magi: God’s and Herod’s. And, wise as they supposedly were, it wasn’t entirely easy for the Magi to dis-cern which was which.

After all, Herod posed as a friend. He offered the Magi hospitality and kindness. He probably flattered them and appealed to every moral weakness he could observe in them. In his pal-ace, they must have felt great physical comfort – rest and tables of plenty on what was an oth-erwise long and treacherous journey.

But if the Magi were honest with themselves, I’ll bet they would have admitted that, regardless of Herod’s charm, they felt a gnawing sense of doubt while in his presence. When they looked upon the Christ Child, born in a stable without any of the comforts of the world or protections of wealth, they probably felt the opposite. They probably felt safe.

The Magi were lucky enough to have the right

plan spelled out for them in a dream, but for

the rest of us, it’s enough to remember this:

God’s plan is often the one that leads us to plac-

es of great simplicity, great humility and great

love. Let’s have the wisdom to view power with

suspicion, and innocence with admiration.

Religion Question of the Week

What is the Sacristy in a Church building? (Answer on page 4) Did You Know?

Did you know that at the time St. Monica Church began, the Most Reverend Edward F. Hoban was the Archbishop – Bishop of the Cleveland Diocese? One Liner

“Be prepared and be honest”. (John Wooden – Basketball Coach at UCLA)

Talents and Gifts For many of us, the words ‘gift’ and ‘talent’ are inter-changeable. To our ears the sentences: ‘That kid is a gifted basketball player!’ or ‘That girl is a truly talented singer’ sound the same. However, at the root of their meaning, they are not the same at all. Talents are inher-ited but gifts are received. As human beings we inherit our talents, or more truthful-ly, the potential for our talents, from our mothers and fa-thers. Talents have a genetic component in the same way as eye-color, body shape and potential height do. Natural talents are just that: “natural”! They can be at-tributed to the natural genetic material existing within all of us, that is passed down from generation to generation. Very often the talent a father has in sports or academics can be seen in the following generation or the singing or artistic skills a mother has that form the foundation for one of her children. Have you ever been told that you have a skill or talent that is just like one of those your par-ents have? Talents also depend upon nurture. Although you may have a natural talent as a baseball player, unless a coach or parent teaches you how to throw a ball, how to stand properly, and how to swing the bat so you can hit the ball, you will never be proficient. AND, if like me, your genetic material carries minimal to zero athletic potential, no amount of coaching will make you proficient. As I once told a class of eighth graders that I took skating in winter, and who teased me unmercifully because I could barely stand on my skates while they whirled around me with exquisite skill: “Okay, you can skate and I can’t, but I can solve quadratic equations in my mind, and you can’t.” We all have our areas of strength. St. Paul tells us we have different gifts that come from the graces given to each one of us. These God-given gifts become “charged with grace” when God “breathes” the soul at our conception. Gifts are the innate characteris-tics of our personality that can be seen early in our lives. They are an essential part of who we are: friendship, kindness, patience, joy, peace, forgiveness, gentleness, love, hope, trust, and many others are the true gifts we have to offer to each other. Each of these gifts has enor-mous healing power in the lives with whom we deal. I have often heard people claim that hey have few talents to boast of and worry they don’t have much to offer to society. Yet, as I see them deal with others, their God-given gifts make them stars! They are peacemakers, the up-lifting healers, the ones you can depend upon to help without being asked, and those whose gentle words and welcoming smiles make them irreplaceable.

Very often our talents wane as we get older, but our God-given gifts (if we have used them well) mature ‘like fine wine’. Others may mention your talents, but what people really remember, and value are the blessings your gifts brought to their lives.

The next Baptism class will be held on Tuesday, September 14 at 6:30 in the Parish Office. If you would like to have your child Baptized, please call the Parish Office to register: 216-662-8685.
