Four Worlds-Factor Intro: June 19, 2013

Edition #3: July 17, 2013

Slide Count: 45

The file is not intended to be used with students as one barrage of 4W charts. This powerpoint is another resource for planning and training with partner teachers -- both immediately for Fall 2013 and long term.

This file is a combination of 4W charts that relate to materials available on the Activities Database. Slides that refer directly to items on the database have the item referenced.

Four Worlds of HistoryFour Worlds of History

The use of images is intended to be of special assistance for English Learners (EL) students. However, it is important to have an intro activity available with images for the general purpose of using images as an effective way for all students to connect words with meaning and usage.

Teresa Hudock, Director, CALIS [email protected] / usc.edu/calis

This particular powerpoint is offered as an option for introducing students to “the factor sheet”.

Purpose of this file:

The slides are set up to have students focus on one world at a time one set of factors at a time.

Starting with Four Worlds of Water can directly relate to Sumer. It can prepare students to more easily trace how “control over the water supply” was the necessary first step to spark the growth of city-states. It was a turning point that marked “the birth of civilization”. Many factors from this general activity on water will be the same in tracing the rise of Sumerian city-states.

The content is appropriate to any grade level, grades 6–12. However, there is a purposeful connection to 6th grade Ancient History and students’ first application of Four Worlds to Sumer.

The notes section will sometimes offer clarifications or suggested steps. Additional information is offered for those courses or grade levels where further context or details may be appropriate.

Today, controlling the water supply is a challenge in many parts of the world. Access to safe drinking water is a factor that inhibits the rise of developing nations.

NPR “case transcripts” are used to…

connect past-present-personal in order for students to analyze policy options (civic literacy) and personal role/choices (character education)

“use the news for case teaching (not simply “current events”) cases are selected where students are supported with tools and accountable to apply concepts (relevant scholarship) …while also developing media literacy and the habit of “following the news”
