o p e r a t i o n w i t h a h y d r o k i n e t i c t o r q u e c o n v e r t e r in t h e t o r q u e

d e l i v e r y p a t h . In a t h i r d g e a r r a t i o o p e r a t i n g mode d u r i n g

d i r e c t d r i v e a p o r t i o n of t h e t o r q u e is d e l i v e r e d h y d r o k i n e t i -

c a l l y and the b a l a n c e is d i s t r i b u t e d m e c h a n i c a l l y , t h e r e b y

r e d u c i n g t he c o n v e r t e r s l i p and h y d r o k i n e t i c l o s s e s

c o n s i d e r a b l y .

The o u t p u t e l e m e n t of the g e a r s y s t e m is c o n n e c t e d t o

t o r q u e t r a n s f e r g e a r i n g h a v i n g an i n p u t e l e m e n t c o a x i a l l y

a r r a n g e d w i t h r e s p e c t to the a x i s of the g e a r i n g . At a l o c a -

t i o n b e t w e e n t he m u l t i p l e r a t i o g e a r i n g and the t o r q u e c o n v e r -

t e r , t he s t r a t e g i c p o s i t i o n i n g of the t o r q u e t r a n s f e r g e a r i n g

makes i t p o s s i b l e to use a d i f f e r e n t i a l g e a r i n g m e c h a n i s m f o r

c o n n e c t i n g the o u t p u t e l e m e n t of the t o r q u e t r a n s f e r g e a r i n g

to each of two a x l e s h a f t s in such a way t h a t the o p e r a t i n g

a n g l e of t he a x e s of the a x l e s h a f t s is r e l a t i v e l y s m a l l ,

t h e r e b y m a k i n g i t p o s s i b l e to use c o n s t a n t v e l o c i t y u n i v e r s a l

j o i n t s of known c o n s t r u c t i o n and to use s i m p l i f i e d v e h i c l e

t r a c t i o n w h e e l s u s p e n s i o n s .

of an i n t e r n a l c o m b u s t i o n e n g i n e , no t s h o w n . S t a t o r 20 i s

a d a p t e d to be b r a k e d by o v e r r u n n i n g b r a k e 24 to a s t a t i o n a r y

s l e e v e s h a f t 236 c o n n e c t e d to t r a n s m i s s i o n h o u s i n g 28. T h e

s t a t o r 20 i s a n c h o r e d a g a i n s t t he h o u s i n g d u r i n g o p e r a t i o n o f

c o u p l i n g 44 f r e e w h e e l s . C l u t c h 50 is a p p l i e d a l o n g w i t h

c l u t c h 52 to e s t a b l i s h a d i r e c t , f u l l y m e c h a n i c a l d r i v e f r o m

the c r a n k s h a f t to the r i n g g e a r 34. If o n l y the c l u t c h e s 42

and 50 a r e a p p l i e d and c l u t c h 52 is r e l e a s e d , a d i r e c t d r i v e

c o n d i t i o n is e s t a b l i s h e d t h a t is f u l l y h y d r o k i n e t i c . T h e

c o n n e c t i o n b e t w e e n the c r a n k s h a f t and the r i g h t g e a r 34 i s

e s t a b l i s h e d by the t o r q u e c o n v e r t e r 1 0 .

I f o n l y the c l u t c h e s 52 and 42 a r e a p p l i e d and c l u t c h

52 is r e l e a s e d , a s p l i t t o r q u e d e l i v e r y p a t h is p r o v i d e d

t h r o u g h the g e a r s y s t e m . P a r t of the t o r q u e is d i s t r i b u t e d

. d i r e c t l y to the c a r r i e r 40 from the c r a n k s h a f t 22 t h r o u g h t h e

c l u t c h 52. The b a l a n c e of the t o r q u e is d i s t r i b u t e d t h r o u g h

the t o r q u e c o n v e r t e r and is d i s t r i b u t e d to t he sun g e a r 3 0 .

An o v e r d r i v e c o n d i t i o n is e s t a b l i s h e d by e n g a g i n g t h e

b r a k e 48 to a n c h o r the sun g e a r 32 and by e n g a g i n g the c l u t c h

52 t h e r e b y d i s t r i b u t i n g t o r q u e from the c r a n k s h a f t to t h e

c a r r i e r w i t h t h e sun g e a r 32 a c t i n g as a r e a c t i o n m e m b e r .

R e v e r s e d r i v e is a c h i e v e d by e n g a g i n g s i m u l t a n e o u s l y

b r a k e 46 and c l u t c h 50. With the c a r r i e r a c t i n g as a r e a c t i o n

m e m b e r , t u r b i n e t o r q u e is d i s t r i b u t e d to t he sun g e a r 32 a n d

r i n g g e a r 34 is d r i v e n in a r e v e r s e d i r e c t i o n .

The f i n a l d r i v e g e a r i n g 1 4 - i n c l u d e s a d r i v i n g g e a r 54

c o n n e c t e d d i r e c t l y to the r i n g g e a r 34. A f i n a l d r i v e o u t p u t

g e a r 56 is d r i v a b l y c o n n e c t e d to the d r i v i n g g e a r 54 t h r o u g h

an i d l e r g e a r 58 j o u r n a l l e d on a f i x e d a x i s .

s u p p o r t w a l l 60 is b o l t e d or o t h e r w i s e s e c u r e d to i n t e r n a l

s h o u l d e r 62 in the h o u s i n g p o r t i o n 28. Wal l 60 i s i n t e g r a l

w i t h t he s u p p o r t s l e e v e 26 for the s t a t o r . A t u r b i n e s l e e v e

s h a f t 64 is s u p p o r t e d by b u s h i n g 66 in the s t a t i o n a r y s l e e v e

C a r r i e r 40 is c o n n e c t e d t h r o u g h d r i v e s h e l l 96 t o

c l u t c h drum 98 r o t a t a b l y j o u r n a l l e d and s u p p o r t e d on the r i g h t

hand end of the s h a f t 72. Drum 98 d e f i n e s an a n n u l a r c y l i n d e r

100 w h i c h r e c e i v e s an a n n u l a r p i s t o n 1 0 2 .

C l u t c h 52 i n c l u d e s f r i c t i o n c l u t c h p l a t e s 104 a n d

c l u t c h d i s c s 106 s p l i n e d , r e s p e c t i v e l y , to t h e s h a f t 72 a n d

t o t h e i n t e r i o r of t he drum 98. When the a n n u l a r c y l i n d e r 1 0 0

is p r e s s u r i z e d , a d r i v i n g c o n n e c t i o n i s e s t a b l i s h e d t h r o u g h

t h e c l u t c h 52 b e t w e e n s h a f t 72 and the c a r r i e r 40. C l u t c h 5 2

e x p l a i n e d p r e v i o u s l y . C l u t c h 50 c o m p r i s e s c l u t c h drum 1 2 4 ,

wh ich d e f i n e s an a n n u l a r c y l i n d e r 126 . P i s t o n 128 is r e c e i v e d

in the c y l i n d e r 126 and is a d a p t e d to f r i c t i o n a l l y e n g a g e c l u t c h p l a t e s 130 and c l u t c h d i s c s 132 f o r the c l u t c h 50 t o

e s t a b l i s h a c o n n e c t i o n b e t w e e n s h a f t s 64 and 82 w h e n e v e r t h e

c y l i n d e r 126 is p r e s s u r i z e d . C l u t c h p l a t e s 130 a re s p l i n e d t o

the s h a f t 64 and c l u t c h d i s c s 132 a r e s p l i n e d to the i n t e r i o r

of the c l u t c h drum 1 2 4 .

F r i c t i o n b r a k e 48 i n c l u d e s b r a k e p l a t e s 134 and b r a k e

d i s c s 136 a re s p l i n e d , r e s p e c t i v e l y , to the drum 124 and t o

the i n t e r i o r of a b r a k e member 138 f o r m e d on the s u p p o r t w a l l

60. Member 138 d e f i n e s an a n n u l a r c y l i n d e r 140. A n n u l a r

p i s t o n 142 is l o c a t e d w i t h i n the c y l i n d e r 140 and e f f e c t s

c l u t c h i n g e n g a g e m e n t of the b r a k e d i s c s and b r a k e p l a t e s f o r
