WetlandA large portion of

the Tidewater is wetland.

Wetland is soil that is soaked or flooded with water most of the year.

These wetlands contain salt marshes where shellfish breed and live.

Estuaries serve as incubators for a variety of sea life, such as shrimp.

An estuary is that part of the river where it meets the sea; where fresh and salt water mix.

An old Indian name, which means “a swamp on a hill.”

Made up of peat that fills with water when the water table is high.

SavannaA flat grassland with

some scattered trees.

Parts of the Great Swamp become savannas in the drier times of the year.
