SACRAMENT OF RECONCILIATION
Greetings,

Earlier this month I was quarantined due to close contact with a
seminarian who had tested positive for Covid19. I am well and
have tested negative for Covid. During that time, I learned how
to make the best out of a difficult situation. Instead of dwelling
on the inconvenience of being quarantined, I used that time to
reflect on the many blessings that I have received and to be
thankful for them. Please continue to pray for all those suffering
from the effects of the coronavirus. I hope you had a blessed and
fruitful Thanksgiving.

Keeping you in my prayers,
Nicholas Daubner
Dear Brothers and Sisters,

In the Church's Sacrament of the Anointing of the
Sick, through the ministry of the priest, it is Jesus
who touches the sick to heal them from sin and
sometimes even from physical ailment. His cures
were signs of the arrival of the Kingdom of God.
The core message of His healing tells us of His plan to conquer
sin and death by His dying and rising.

When the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick is given, the
hoped for effect is that, if it be God's will, the person be
physically healed of illness. But even if there is no physical
healing, the primary effect of the Sacrament is a spiritual healing
by which the sick person receives the Holy Spirit's gift of peace
and courage to deal with the difficulties that accompany serious
illness or the frailty of old age.

The Catechism of the Catholic Church explains this: “The special
grace of the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick has as its
effects: the uniting of the sick person to the passion of Christ, for
his own good and that of the whole Church; the strengthening,
peace, and courage to endure in a Christian manner the sufferings
of illness or old age; the forgiveness of sins, if the sick person
was not able to obtain it through the Sacrament of Penance; the
restoration of health, if it is conducive to the salvation of his soul;
the preparation for passing over to eternal life” (CCC 1532).

If you or a family member are in need of this sacrament, please
don’t hesitate to reach out. I have created a new emergency line if
the need is immediate. That number is 2185799424.

Peace,
Fr. Derek

Grant your faithful, we pray, almighty God, the resolve to run forth to meet your Christ with righteous deeds at His coming,

who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. ~ Amen

The Advent Season Begins Today!
Take time to reflect on how you will use the next four weeks to prepare your heart
for Christmas. At this time we bring out and bless the Advent wreath! The
progressive lighting of the candles symbolizes the expectation and hope surrounding
our Lord’s first coming into the world and the anticipation of His second coming to
judge the living and the dead. Here is a prayer to use when blessing your family
wreath. When the blessing of the Advent Wreath is celebrated in the home, it is
appropriate that it be blessed by a parent or another member of the family.
All make the sign of the cross and pray:

Father in heaven, set our hearts ablaze to follow in the steps of John the Baptist.
May we bring light and love to all we meet, that the darkness of sin and
fear may be overcome. In Christ’s name we ask this.
Amen.

A Walk Through the History of the Catholic Church ~ Presented by Fr. Leonard Andrie
Some Church historians recognize a pattern: About every 500 years, the Church goes through an
acute crisis that “tends to be a bit unique,” said Father Leonard Andrie, pastor of St. Therese in
Deephaven, MN. Consider, he said, the Great Schism of 1054, and about 500 years later, the
Protestant Reformation “splintering our brothers and sisters into the various denominations” and
accompanying wars. The 16th century was a very difficult time for the Church, Father Andrie says.
“But here we are, 500 years later. We’re seeing our own challenges today,” both inside the Church and in
the secular culture. With his love of Church history, Father Andrie thought a course on that history was in
order. The course will be offered November 16 through May 31 in person and livestreamed. Father
Andrie said he wants to help participants “fall in love with our Lord Jesus Christ a lot more.” The course
also will help give “kind of a lens for our current situation,” he said, “and some of the challenges
that we’re facing, and give people more confidence that the struggles we face now sometimes aren’t
new. God is still in charge and the Holy Spirit still guides,” Father Andrie said. A plan is in place
for the faithful today, just as much as in previous eras, he said.
The first of 15 twohour sessions began November 16, and is offered at 9 a.m. and 6:30 p.m., including time for questions.
Successive sessions will be held November 30, December 7 and 21, January 11 and 18, February 1 and 15, March 8 and 22,
April 5 and 19, and May 3, 17 and 31. The cost is $25, which includes the book, “Timeless: The History of the Catholic
Church,” and other materials. All videos will remain on the website and you will be able to watch all episodes at your
leisure until the end of the year. To register and pay online for the course and materials, visit the St. Therese website,
sttherese.org/biblestudy. Interested parishioners of the Four Pillars in Faith Area Catholic Community can go online to
order and in the comments section write: “send with group package to St. Mary’s, Milaca.” Contact Rita Olson at
[email protected] or 3202662768 immediately after ordering so she can be sure your order has been included
in the St. Mary’s, Milaca delivery. This course has been recommended by Father Derek.
