Reflections on the Sunday Scripture

Fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time

Readings:

Jeremiah 1:4-5, 17-19 1 Corinthians 12:31-13:13

Luke: 4:21-30

Gospel

Jesus began speaking in the synagogue, saying: “Today this Scripture passage is fulfilled in your hearing.” And all spoke highly of him and were amazed at the gracious words that came from his mouth. They also asked, “Isn’t this the son of Joseph?” He said to them, “Surely you will quote me this proverb, ‘Physician, cure yourself,’ and say, ‘Do here in your native place the things that we heard were done in Capernaum.’” And he said, “Amen, I say to you, no prophet is accepted in his own native place. Indeed, I tell you, there were many widows in Israel in the days of Elijah when the sky was closed for three and a half years and a severe famine spread over the entire land. It was to none of these that Elijah was sent, but only to a widow in Zarephath in the land of Sidon. Again, there were many lepers in Israel during the time of Elisha the prophet; yet not one of them was cleansed, but only Naaman the Syrian.” When the people in the synagogue heard this, they were all filled with fury. They rose up, drove him out of the town, and led him to the brow of the hill on which their town had been built, to hurl him down headlong. But Jesus passed through the midst of them and went away.

1. Have you ever been praised and looked up to, and then all of a sudden were rejected and no one believed in you? How did you feel?

2. The people who knew Jesus within His hometown became shocked at the words He spoke to them. At first they were amazed and asked, “Isn’t this the son of Joseph?” Why the change in their hearts? Did Jesus arouse them in a way to show them that something new was happening and they did not want the change?

(continued)

3. Do you feel it is better to preach to those who do not know you or to the ones who do know you? Why?

4. At the end of the Gospel, Jesus passes through the midst of the angry crowd and goes away. Are there any conflicts in your life where you are being called to walk away?

A couple thoughts for today:

Prayer is not a “spare wheel” that

you pull out when in trouble, but

it is a “steering wheel” that directs

your right path throughout the journey.

and

Why is a car’s WINDSHIELD so large

and the rearview mirror so small?

Because our PAST is not as

important as our FUTURE.

So, look ahead

and move on.

MENTORS NEEDED FOR CHILDREN OF THE FOREST

Can you spare a little time for the needy children of the Ocala National Forest?

SoZo has an after-school program at its Mentoring Center on Highway 42.

Mentoring requires no training or prior experience! You would just be there

to help kids with reading, writing, arts and crafts, games, etc.

The Center operates Mondays thru Wednesdays from 2:30 PM until 5:30 PM.

Pick a day that works for you – once a week – more if you’d

like — even less if that works better!

Any help you can give would be greatly appreciated. It’s an experience you won’t

soon forget! Details are available in a brochure in our St. Vincent de Paul Office

any Monday thru Thursday, 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM, or call 352-245-4700.

Can you plant a flower, sow a seed...

know the difference 'tween a sapling and a weed?

A couple of hours per week...this kind deed

would help out our Garden Club,

for which there's a need.

Your schedule would be flexible. Only one meeting at the start. Many benefits would prevail,

because it’s coming from your heart.

For more information, please call Elizabeth at 352-430-5205.

St. Mark’s Garden Club Thanks You!

The Multi-Media Ministry needs YOU!

We are in need of volunteers who can develop the slides

that you see on the overhead screens each week.

If you know how to use Microsoft PowerPoint

Software—and you don’t need to be an expert—please

contact Judy Devaney at 352-245-6878.

for you to spiritually adopt a baby now.

Our apologies that we ran out, but

The history behind “Our Lady of Lourdes Prayer Garden” here at St. Mark the Evangelist Catholic Church.

By: Deacon John Rumplasch — November 2018

In October of 2009, Deacon Bob Esposito and his wife, Ann, along with Michele and Deacon John Rumplasch, traveled on a pilgrimage to Lourdes and Nevers (St. Gildard Convent), France, and to Rome, Italy, to celebrate the Ordination of Deacon John that took place on June 13, 2009, and to pray for the Grace of God. Deacon Bob Esposito always had a deep devotion to Our Lady of Lourdes and to St. Bernadette, and Deacon John (a convert) wanted to experience a deeper devotion to the Blessed Mother. While in Lourdes, and after serving as deacons during two Masses at the grotto, both Deacons Bob and John together were inspired to plan a prayer garden with a grotto to be built at the parish of St. Mark the Evangelist Catholic Church. Upon returning home, the project was immediately introduced to Fr. Simon Shaner, who was the Pastor at the time. The prayer garden was placed on hold due to the building of the new church. After the new church was built in 2010, once again the project of the prayer garden was presented to our new Pastor, Fr. Jerzy (George) Maj, who advised that the prayer garden had to be placed on hold because of paying off the church mortgage and expenses at that time. Then in 2012, the prayer garden and an enrichment center were introduced to Fr. Sebastian Hanks, our new Pastor, who agreed that both should be built. But this time, the prayer garden had to again be placed on hold because there was a need for a rectory so that the priests could be on property. After the rectory was built, again a request for the prayer garden was made; but there was an obvious need for the building of the enrichment center for Religious Education and Ministry meeting rooms and a place for the Society of St. Vincent de Paul. Yet again, the prayer garden was placed on hold. Since 2009 to this date, prayers have been offered by many for the building of the “Our Lady of Lourdes Prayer Garden,” and now they have been answered. We have our church, our rectory, our enrichment center, and we are now ready to build our prayer garden. After much planning and many meetings, along with conversations with Bishop John Noonan and others at the Chancery, and after the arrival of our newest and current Pastor, Fr. Mariusz Dymek, in September, the prayer garden was finally and completely approved; and on November 11, after the 10:00 AM Mass, Fr. Mariusz Dymek conducted a groundbreaking ceremony that took place where the grotto is to be built. We now look forward to the completion of the prayer garden with the grotto of “Our Lady of Lourdes,” and toward the dedication of the prayer garden on February 10, 2019, honoring the Feast of Our Lady of Lourdes. Deacon Bob Esposito and I would like to thank ALL of you who have prayed for and contributed to the building of our prayer garden.

Our Lady of Lourdes Prayer Garden and Grotto — Become a part of it!

Prayer Intention Cards

can still be submitted — this weekend only!

To participate, just complete a Prayer Card, listing your personal intention, and then

either place it in an envelope marked “Prayer Card” and drop it in the collection basket,

or submit the Prayer Card directly to the Office.

There is a supply of 4” x 3” Prayer Card forms in the Narthex, next to the Brick Display. The suggested offering for each Prayer

Intention Card is $10 and this must accompany the Prayer Card form.

The Prayer Intention Cards will then all be placed within the foundation of the Grotto

with a plaque identifying their location.

Cards must be turned in this weekend!

St. Mark Men’s Guild Ken Lineman 20/20 Club The St. Mark Men’s Guild Constitution states that “Our main objective

is to raise funds to assist the pastor with various parish projects, and to assist other parish organizations with sponsored events,

and to promote the spiritual and social growth of our members.”

We are very proud to announce that our fundraisers have contributed over $278,500 to St. Mark Parish since it’s 2005 inception, and given over $77,000 in prize money to our members.

Each week, one of the clergy draws four $25 winners. After 20 weeks, all members are then eligible in the drawing for the

four grand prizes — $400, $300, $200, and $100...for a total of $1,000.

Please join the 27th Session of the 20/20 Club. It begins March 3rd, so don ’t wait!

Make out your $20 check payable to the St. Mark Men ’s Guild and place it in the 20/20 Envelope, dated January 6, 2019, which was provided with your regular

envelopes. Drop it in the collection basket at any weekend Mass.

You can also join by using the form below. Instead of the offertory envelope, just complete the form and put it in a sealed envelope with your $20 check

payable to St. Mark Men’s Guild. Mark the envelope: Attn 20/20 Club, and drop it in the collection basket before February 17th.

Thank you ! St. Mark Men’s Guild - Len Capobianco, 20/20 Chairman

Automatic Bank Payments for Offertory Contributions

The office quite often receives inquiries from parishioners regarding on-line donations. While we do not offer “e-giving or on-line donations,” you may consider another option. You can save yourself time and effort by setting up automatic payments with your financial institution, where they will mail a check for your offertory contributions directly to St. Mark the Evangelist.

The process is as follows: You need to be enrolled for on-line banking with your financial institution, which is free of charge; organize authorization with your financial institution to make weekly or monthly payments to St. Mark the Evangelist; provide your financial institution with your 4-digit Parishioner ID Number (the same number which is printed on your offertory envelopes), if you are unsure of your ID number, please contact the parish office; in the memo section of the bank check, please identify where the money is going i.e. Weekly Offertory, St. Vincent de Paul, special collections, etc.

Your bank will send your contribution directly to St. Mark the Evangelist for posting in our ledger. There is no charge for this service. Please note that this can only be done from your savings or checking account, not your credit card. Most banks offer this service. You will need to contact your financial institution if you are interested in setting up this payment method. Please let our office know if you no longer require bi-monthly sets of offertory envelopes.

If you are the parent of a young adult with special needs, you may want to look into this

group located right here in the Villages.

This group started only three years ago with 12 members. It now has over 160 members.

We hold monthly meetings every third Thursday of the month at the Lake Miona Recreation Center

in the Villages. We bring in guest speakers covering all sorts of important topics.

We have had representatives from ADP, FCC, several attorneys (Guardianship, Trust, Wills, and Special Needs Trust) and quite a number

of residential facilities such as New Horizons, Key, Noah’s Landings and a few others. We also have had

speakers talk to us about ABLE UNITED.

Our goal is to help educate and provide support to families with disabled children.

Meetings are open to anyone who has a special needs young adult. For more information, please contact John Langan, Founder and Special

Olympics Coach, at 352-633-1136.
