THE NATIONAL SOCIETY OF LEADERSHIP AND SUCCESS

WELCOME TO OUR COMMUNITY

Welcome to The National Society of Leadership and Success! We are looking forward to being a part of your leadership journey.

In the Foundations of Leadership program, you’ll learn the fundamentals of leadership, empowering you to conquer whatever lies ahead. You’ll be joined by peers at your local chapter who are also looking to better themselves by becoming stronger leaders. You’ll also be joining a community of over one million members nationwide who have joined the NSLS.

Throughout your experience with us, you’ll be supported every step of the way by both the Chapter Leaders on your campus, as well as the National Office.

This is where your leadership begins – and it starts now! Congratulations on taking the first step toward becoming a leader who makes a better world.

THE NATIONAL SOCIETY OF LEADERSHIP AND SUCCESS

Orientation is the jumping-off point to your journey with the NSLS. It sets the tone for the events to follow and is a key step in the Foundations of Leadership Certification. The Orientation is primarily information driven – a review of local events, expectations and leadership opportunities. This is also a time during which many chapters introduce the Executive Board and arrange committee sign-ups.

A lot of information is covered in the Orientation, and each member must attend an Orientation meeting to complete the steps to induction.

Keep in mind; this should also be a lot of fun! Many of our members have reported meeting some of their best friends through the NSLS, and it all begins at Orientation.

Optional:Write down something that excited you during your Orientation.

THE NATIONAL SOCIETY OF LEADERSHIP AND SUCCESS

Welcome to your Leadership Training Day (LTD) event. Congratulations on taking the next step on your path to induction. Today is a chance to take a break from your normal busy routine, and look at the big picture. We hope you will use this time to hone in on your passions and purpose while setting a strong foundation of practical leadership skills that you can put to use right away.

The LTD is designed as an introduction to the NSLS’ fundamental philosophies about leadership, what we call our Leadership Foundations. These foundations create a solid starting point. We can’t teach you everything you’ll ever need to know about leadership in a few hours; as a topic, leadership is going to engage you for years to come. What you will get today are tools to help you explore new mindsets and look closely at how your beliefs are impacting your achievement of goals.

Getting the most out of this session comes down to the energy you put into it. Approach the exercises with curiosity and an open mind, and you will likely learn a few new things about yourself and your goals. Do this while supporting and encouraging the other members at your chapter, and you will certainly experience what it’s like to be part of a community of leaders.

It’s critical that, as you work with others today, you keep things supportive and confidential. Your fellow chapter members are your partners when it comes to leadership and success, and you need to be able to trust each other. This is your chance to start building a network of like-minded people that you’ll know for life, and you want that network to be strong.

Have fun today, take chances and push yourself outside your comfort zone! You’re in the group that ‘gets it’ – that your leadership journey doesn’t end. It takes work to grow, develop, and accomplish big goals.

We look forward to supporting you on your leadership journey, and learning more about you as a leader who will make a better world.

Construct Your Purpose Map

Write the answers from the Shot Clock activity on the map below. Think about the main idea for each of the answers you recorded in the previous activity and take some time to try and find a connection between them. This will become your common thread that can help point you toward your purpose.

In the center of the map is a blank square where you will then write your newly identified purpose. What’s the thing that links all of your answers today? What is your purpose?

Construct Your Personal Vision Statement

Using the purpose identified from the first activity, you will now craft your own shared vision statement using the four key ingredients below.

First, you’re going to write down your purpose from last activity. Next, take some time to evaluate your purpose and identify your values, beliefs, and passions that will help you achieve it. For example vision statements, turn to the next page.

Now that you have the four key components, put each of the pieces together to form your own personal vision statement. Remember that you can choose to start your statement with any of the four pieces.

My Vision Statement

Example Vision Statements:

“There was an Idea…to bring together a group of remarkable people. To make them work together when we needed them to, to fight the battles that…we never could.” – Nick Fury, The Avengers

1. Purpose – Bring together a group of remarkable people

2. Values – Make them work together when we needed to them to

3. Passion and Belief – Fight the battles that...we never could

I want to start an organization whose mission will be to clean the world’s oceans. It’s important to take care of animals and it is our responsibility to clean up our trash from an animal’s habitat. Healthier oceans means healthier animals, as well as healthier lives for humans.

1. Purpose – I want to clean the world’s oceans

Small Group Word Cloud

Everyone in your group will choose one word from their cloud that is most integral to them identifying their personal purpose. Add each of these words into the template below in order to form a small group word cloud.

Incorporating other’s visions

1. Looking at your Small Group Word Cloud, choose one word that is not your own. Add thisword to your Personal Word Cloud under Small Group Addition found on the previous page.

2. Once you select this word, describe to your group how this new word can be related toyou defining your purpose and accomplishing your vision. Feel free to write below how youwill incorporate someone else’s passion and motivation into your own vision.

Example:• The most important thing to one of my group members was having fun. My passion is

helping others and I will make sure to incorporate lightness and fun into that, so theycould also be motivated towards my vision. I could do this through hosting events for thecommunity like a comedy show dinner or a game night with free babysitting.

#Winning

With your small group, choose one goal to strive for. This does not have to be a real goal that you’ll do, but choose one to use in this activity.

If you’re in the Obstacles Group, you will come up with potential challenges that may impact the development of a win in your group’s goal. This includes listing resources that you’ll need to accomplish the goal.

If you’re in the Solutions Group, you will provide possible solutions to the obstacles stated. This includes listing where to find resources to help or even naming yourself as a possible resource.

DISC Breakdown

As we have learned, moving forward with your vision will require the leadership skill of removing barriers and inspiring others based on the way they communicate. Part of great leadership is helping others use their own gifts, talents and values to help make the world a better place. Understanding your communication style and that of others is critical to successful leaders as they work to achieve their goals. This activity will help you gain awareness of how communication influences your success and that of those around you.

Goals and Milestones

In the previous foundations, you learned how to identify your purpose, craft a strong vision statement, inspire others to help you, and how to best communicate with them based on their style. Now, we’re going to give you one last important tool that will be crucial to your success: how to set goals and take timely action towards them.

First, identify one long-term goal that you’d like to focus on during your NSLS experience and write it below.

My long-term goal

Next, establish a mini milestone for your goal. Remember, a mini milestone is a meaningful step toward reaching your long-term goal that can be reasonably accomplished in a two-week timeframe.

Make sure to be specific in your milestone! Ask yourself questions like “How will I know when it’s accomplished? What are some objective markers that will tell me and everyone else that this milestone is completed? What specific date will I have this completed by?”

Write down your first mini milestone that will take you one step closer to accomplishing your long-term goal.

Mini milestone

THE NATIONAL SOCIETY OF LEADERSHIP AND SUCCESS

Each academic year, the NSLS broadcasts six live speaker events to chapters. These presentations are a vital component of the leadership training that members receive, with topics as diverse as effective money management techniques, cutting edge internet networking tools, and personal health and wellness for a lifetime of achievement.

The speakers are carefully chosen for their ability to relate to a diverse audience as well as for the relevance of their topics to NSLS members. Past speakers include Sir Richard Branson, Trevor Noah, Deepak Chopra, Arianna Huffington, and Anderson Cooper among others, discussing how to create vision, identify and work toward goals, and successfully transition from college to career.

While other activities are restricted to members, NSLS speaker events are open to anyone on campus or in the greater community that would like to attend. This helps each chapter to create lasting positive change.

SUCCESS NETWORKING TEAM MEETINGS

The Success Networking Team concept is based on Napoleon Hill’s research of the most successful people in our country. He worked with and interviewed Thomas Edison, Woodrow Wilson, Andrew Carnegie and numerous others. In the process of conducting his study, Hill discovered that many of his participants created a support team network with which they regularly met to share ideas and hold each other accountable for achieving goals. Today, highly successful people around the world routinely use Success Networking Teams to foster great achievement.

Within the NSLS, Success Networking Teams (SNTs) are one of the vital components that inspire and encourage members to achieve individual and group successes. Within their SNT meetings, members discuss the speaker presentations, set SMART (Specific, Measurable, Actionable, Rewarding, Time Specific) goals based upon what they’ve learned and where they are in their individual progress, and hold one another accountable for completing the action steps necessary to achieve their goals. This peer-to-peer mentoring, when paired with the speaker events, has proven to be extremely effective in enabling members to continually gain momentum and strive to achieve higher goals.

Success Networking Teams, in addition to the benefits of setting and achieving goals, begin helping members to develop the “soft skills” of leaders through teamwork. These skills include self-awareness, supporting others, directing action, effective meetings, networking, working in teams, holding oneself and others accountable, and more.

After each SNT meeting, members submit their meeting report through the “Submit SNT Report” icon under “My Membership” on the Members Area page. This report is reviewed by the Advisor and/or a National Office Representative and may receive constructive coaching before it is approved. The National Office works with Advisors to make sure members are given feedback and coaching to maximize the impact of the SNTs and ensure all members have fully committed to making personal changes of a significant nature. Members who receive coaching need to revise their submission and re-submit for approval.

The Induction Ceremony takes place at least once a year and in many chapters once per term. This is a formal occasion welcoming inducted members into the NSLS and recognizing individual achievement. In order to be inducted, NSLS members must have completed each of the steps to induction. The ceremony solidifies the effort members invested in earning their membership, and grants access to a lifelong network with other inducted members.

The date of the induction ceremony is typically planned at the beginning of the term. Throughout the term, all members are responsible for checking their membership progress by clicking on the Membership Status icon under “My Membership” on the Members Area page, and ensuring it has been updated accurately at least two weeks before the induction ceremony date. This deadline ensures every member will have a certificate and induction items sent in time from the National Office. No exceptions can be made, as the membership items and certificates are printed and mailed by an outside vendor that requires advance notice for processing.

Members that like to plan and coordinate special events can contact the Advisor and Student President in the beginning of the term to request assisting on the Induction Committee.

WHAT’S NEXT?Congratulations – you’re inducted! Now that you’re inducted, you will receive the membership items you have earned, including your Foundations of Leadership certificate and t-shirt, at your chapter’s induction ceremony. If you cannot make the ceremony, you’ll want to make arrangements to pick your kit up from your Advisor or Student President.

As a newly inducted member, you have the opportunity to continue your leadership journey with the Advanced and Executive Leadership Certifications. You also have the opportunity to earn college credit for each of the certifications. If you are already enrolled, please check in with the Education Team to complete your work and receive your transcript. For any questions related to our credit offerings, contact the NSLS Education Team at [email protected].
