CALL (813) 844-7262 FOR MORE INFORMATION.

In this issue of FoundationFocus we recognize our donors from 2017. Without their generous gifts we would not have been able to provide almost $2.6 million to Tampa General in fiscal year 2017 to fund initiatives that directly benefit both our patients and our dedicated team members.

I’d like to highlight two stories of faithful donors who have supported the Foundation for many years, both through major gifts and by sponsoring our signature events.

Former Foundation Chair Pam Muma and her husband, Les, were the driving force behind raising the money for our world-class Level IV Jennifer Leigh Muma Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. In this issue you will read about how they have recently gone a step further and made it possible for parents and family members who are not able to be with their babies in the NICU to see them real time by camera.

Another couple who have turned their patient experience into support for TGH is Foundation board member Ron Weisser and his wife, Debra. Ron received such fabulous care by his cardiologist Dr. Debbie Rinde-Hoffman when he was a patient at TGH that he now supports scholarships for nurses from the cardiac unit during Nurses Week. This is their way to give back, as many of our grateful patients do.

Volunteers are also critical to the success of the Foundation. Anne Compton and Lauren Thomas Compton chaired our very first Night at Disney On Ice that raised over $190 thousand for the TGH Children’s Medical Center.

You will read more about the event and see pictures from the Patrons’ Party in this issue. A heartfelt thank you to all of the committee members and sponsors who worked so hard to make this a fun and successful evening. Thank you also to the families and companies that purchased the Bibbidi Bobidi Boo Buckets filled with toys and games to be delivered to the patients in the Children’s Medical Center.

The Tampa General Hospital Foundation hosted its 21st Annual Gala on Saturday, May 12, 2018 at the Marriott Waterside. This year’s guests were invited to enjoy Alice in Wonderland: Mad About TGH! Those attending enjoyed great entertainment, a live auction, plated dinner, open bar and many other exciting activities, and the proceeds from the Gala will benefit TGH’s Children’s Medical Center and the Fund for the Future. Special thanks to Dr. Tom Bernasek & Tammy King and Joe & Laura Williams for chairing this year’s Gala, and also to Gene & Patsy McNichols for serving as our Honorary Chairs. Look for an update and all of the great photos in the next issue of FoundationFocus.

Thank you to all of our TGH Foundation donors and volunteers. You impact patients’ lives in such positive ways every day.

Net proceeds of over $190,000 from this year’s event will benefit Tampa General Hospital’s Children’s Medical Center.

Over 1,800 TGH employees and their families were able to enjoy Disney On Ice. The TGH Foundation also donated over 900 tickets to local charities this year, so some of those less fortunate would have an opportunity to attend the magical experience.

We want to take this opportunity to thank the volunteers and sponsors that helped to make our premiere year of Disney On Ice a wonderful event! We are also thankful for our continued partnership with Feld Entertainment in helping us provide a family-friendly event for our donors, yet again!

From the CEOAs I finish my first eight months at Tampa General, I am proud of all that the team has accomplished and looking forward to setting our course for the future and continuing to transform this already excellent institution into a hospital that is truly world-class. One of my first orders of business with the team has been to create a strategic plan that will serve as a road

map to achieve our goals.

Tampa General Hospital is an amazing institution on solid ground, and we are well-poised to continue our tradition of providing the best care – from the most complex to the most routine – all with the patient at the center. As health care evolves, so too must TGH. We are evolving out of the “sickness business” into the care coordination business. We want our team members, patients and community to understand that our mission is broader than caring for people when they are acutely ill. We’re here to help improve the health and wellness of all those in the community, coordinating care from community-based settings to the hospital and on to post-hospital care.

To do this, we will focus on six strategic pillars:

Embrace quality and value. We’ll push to elevate our standards for patient safety, quality and satisfaction to world-class levels.

Become the best place to work through talent management and team member engagement. We’ll attract, develop and retain a diverse, talented work force with new leadership training, talent management, skills development and other initiatives.

Achieve cost control and improve efficiency. While we improve quality, we’ll also be improving efficiency to decrease costs. We’ll do all of this with our patients in mind, so we can pass along savings to our patients and reinvest any profits back into the

hospital in order to continue to offer the latest technologies and treatments.

Drive market strategy and growth. We’ll look at ways to increase access points and build on Tampa General Hospital’s strengths in the region, so our patients can access our care in their communities.

Become consumer-focused and retail ready. We’ll look for ways to innovate and embrace technology to make care more convenient and accessible for our patients as consumers, making it as easy as possible for our patients to interact with us.

Align with physicians. We’ll build on our strong relationships with both USF Health and our community physicians, making Tampa General Hospital the best place for them to practice medicine.

Sometimes change can be challenging, but this is an exciting time for TGH. There are lots of great hospitals – but there’s only one Tampa General Hospital. We provide the most complex, life-saving care that no one else here can do. We have a rich history of innovation and a strong tradition of teaching tomorrow’s health care providers as the primary teaching hospital for the USF Health Morsani College of Medicine. We are driven to elevate all that we do for our patients, families and community.

As we move forward, I would like to thank all of you for your ongoing support of TGH. I am grateful for your partnership and look forward to working with you all as we work to ensure that Tampa General Hospital reaches its world-class potential.

This year’s “Bibbidi Bobidi Boo Buckets” (previously known as Buckets of Laughs) were, once again, a big hit. Sponsors purchased their bucket from the TGH Foundation and then filled it from a list of suggested items needed by the Child Life Specialists at the TGH Children’s Medical Center or had the Foundation fill it for them. We would like to thank The Beck Group for sponsoring this program for the second year in a row.

Sponsors were encouraged to decorate their bucket with a favorite theme, company logos and fun color schemes. This year’s Bibbidi Bobidi Boo Buckets were displayed at the Patrons’ Party at the TGH Foundation’s A Night at Disney On Ice, and will be personally delivered by the sponsors to the Children’s Medical Center.

We would like to send a big thank you to the generous donors who helped make the holidays a little brighter at Tampa General Hospital by supporting Operation Santa. Over the holiday season, Operation Santa raised nearly $20,000 to benefit Tampa General Hospital’s Children’s Medical Center. In addition, many companies, organizations and individuals came to visit the Children’s Medical Center bearing gifts valued at over $15,000.

Donations designated to Operation Santa make it possible for these little ones and their families to enjoy a birthday and other holiday celebrations throughout the year, even from unfamiliar, and sometimes unsettling, hospital beds. From fulfilling Christmas wish lists, to birthday surprises, to celebrating a patient’s last day of physical therapy or chemo, all who

participate in Operation Santa bring joy to some of the very sickest of our pediatric patients.

On behalf of the sick children who may be spending birthdays, Christmas or other special family holidays as patients at Tampa General Hospital Children’s Medical Center, we want to thank all of the generous donors for participating in this year’s Operation Santa.

Employee Golf Tournament Raises over $95,000 The 9th annual Employee Golf Tournament drew 191 golfers and raised $95,193.

According to Chris Roederer, Senior Vice President, Human Resources, the nine tournaments combined have raised more than $702,000.

“I can’t say enough about the team of volunteers who do the preliminary work and commit their time on the day of the event,” Roederer said. “They work very hard for about four months to make the preparations.”

“They work with sponsors, and they give up their full day from 5 a.m. to 4 p.m. to stage it,” he said. “It’s exhausting and so rewarding.”

Proceeds from past tournaments have helped fund the Employee Emergency Fund that provides financial assistance to employees in good standing who experience a serious emergency or financial event. Since its inception in 2009, the fund has provided $328,534.47 in financial assistance to 352 employees.

Approximately $160,000 raised during the tournaments was used to buy new exercise equipment at the TGH Health & Wellness Center, including rowing machines, Pilates reformers, a seated elliptical, a metabolic analyzer, an A1c machine to screen for pre-diabetes and a Tanita Scale that measures body composition, total body water, visceral fat, basal metabolic rate and metabolic age.

Tournament proceeds also funded the development of a new on-site GED program. Fifteen employees currently attend the classes, and three are on track to have their GEDs completed by this summer. A portion of the proceeds will also go toward a new Employee Scholarship Fund that will help service-level employees go to school to become surgical or pharmacy technicians, medical billing coders, facilities techs, medical assistants, patient care technicians or phlebotomists. The program will help employees advance their careers at TGH and help with staffing needs throughout the hospital.

Employee Campaign 2018 – TGH CaresThe Foundation’s annual Employee Campaign raised $417,563, surpassing the original goal by nearly $50,000. The campaign ran from February 9 through March 23.

Eighty-eight percent of employees participated this year, an 11 percent increase over last year. Sixty-five percent of hospital departments had 100 percent participation.

The top three funds to receive donations were the Employee Emergency Fund, the Fund for the Future and the Patient Hardship Fund.

The Employee Emergency Fund was established in 2009 to assist employees in good standing who experience an emergency or catastrophic financial event with immediate financial assistance. An employee committee oversees the program.

“Employee financial emergencies often arise from a variety of situations such as a death in the family, domestic and substance abuse, medical emergencies and more,” said Andrea Cichon, manager of recruitment, who is a non-voting committee member.

The name of the employee is not revealed when the committee votes on the request. Since its inception, 352 employees have received more than $328,534.47 in financial assistance from the fund.

The Fund for the Future supports various requests that are not included in the hospital’s capital budget. Recently, the fund provided $450,000 for bladder scanners and $69,000 for medication on demand devices to assist our caregivers and improve our patients’ experience.

The Patient Hardship Fund assists patients and families in need during acute hospitalizations with items such as hotel stays, transportation costs and other basic necessities.

Charitable Contributions and the New Tax LawPresident Trump signed the new tax law, the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act, on December 22, 2017. While the main thrust of the new law was corporate income tax relief, there was also a smorgasbord of tax cuts, raises and adjustments of all types for individual taxpayers. The news was full of “information” about how this would affect individuals’ income taxes. Many myths were offered – such as, “your charitable deduction is going away.” We all heard various versions of this one. True? Not really. But just enough of an ort of a kernel of a mote of possible veracity that it should be explained.

The newly increased standard deduction – you win either way.

A major feature of the new tax law was a substantial increase of the standard deduction. For a married couple, the standard deduction for 2017 was $12,700. For the same couple in 2018, the standard deduction will be $24,000 – almost double.

Your deduction from adjusted gross income to arrive at your taxable income is the greater of two numbers – the standard deduction, or the sum of your itemized deductions, whichever is greater. So for that subset of individuals whose itemized deductions will be below $24,000, they will effectively no longer be deducting charitable contributions (or real estate taxes, or interest expenses, or income taxes, or medical expenses, or anything else) as their standard deduction will exceed their itemized. From their perspective, they have simply gotten a tax break and their taxes will go down no matter what.

For the itemizer, the rules will not have changed one bit. Every additional dollar of charitable contribution to a favorite charity will still reduce their personal income tax bill. And that is a nice thing. Bottom line – either way, you win.

Another myth – With the AMT, I don’t get any benefit from my itemized deductions anyway, right?

This myth floated around even before the new tax law was passed. It is true that the Alternative Minimum Tax, or AMT, does eliminate many deductions – taxes, the interest on a home equity loan, slower depreciation for businesses, and miscellaneous itemized deductions, among other things.

However, the AMT never touched charitable deductions. Both before and after the new tax law, charitable contributions were and will be deductible for both regular tax and for AMT, for those who itemize. Plus the new tax law reduced the AMT, and did not increase or strengthen it.

Benefit of contribution of appreciated property maintained.

There were also a lot of rules that did not change, and that bears repeating. Gifts of appreciated marketable securities still have the favorable treatment of deduction at current fair market value, with no recognition of the tax on the appreciation. And since a public charity does not pay taxes, a public charity donee will not be taxed on the appreciation either. The result is a win-win. No gain to the donor, deduction of the full fair market value and the charity receives the full value of the proceeds after they sell. This rule is intact and unaffected by the new tax law.

Qualified charitable distributions from an IRA.

There is still a wonderful tax break for IRA owners over 70 who do not need to use all of their required distributions themselves. Up to $100,000 can be directed to be paid to a public charity, and then such amount need never be taken into income by the account owner. Since the amount never comes into income, adjusted gross income (AGI) is unaffected and thus other limitations based on AGI are unaffected as well, which leads to tax savings. Such distributions can count against the minimum required distribution that the taxpayer must take from the account, which is very helpful if the taxpayer just wanted the amount to go to charity anyway. Again, the charity does not pay income taxes, so the charity gets to keep 100 percent of any IRA money, not some lowered amount which is net of taxes – another win-win.

And one new benefit from the tax law.

This is of limited application, but it is a new benefit conferred by the new law. For many years, the income tax deduction for a cash contribution to a public charity or charities has been limited to 50 percent of the adjusted gross income of the donor. Any amount over 50 percent of AGI was carried forward to deduct the next year, for up to five years. Since few taxpayers give away 50 percent of their income regularly, this limit rarely applies, but certainly can apply in a “special” year, where a taxpayer has either low income, or high contributions, or both.

The new tax law increases this limitation to 60 percent. So, individual taxpayers have a higher maximum deduction for each year now, and can use up their excess amounts faster if they make a large contribution in a low income tax year.

There, not so bad after all! The charitable income tax deduction is still viable and valuable. It has even been enhanced in certain circumstances. It is far from put out to pasture and retired by the new tax law.

Bedside Cameras Provide Peace of Mind to Parents of NICU BabiesMany parents of infants in the Jennifer Leigh Muma Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) often aren’t able to stay with their child around the clock.

That frequently leaves them wondering how their bundle of joy is doing when they’re not with them.

Thanks to new NicView™ cameras recently installed in every NICU patient room, parents and family members who aren’t at the hospital can now see their babies in real time day or night through a secure online portal.

Shannon Mancini of Lakeland comes to the hospital daily to be with her daughter, Lillianna. “I think it’s awesome,” she said of the NicView camera in her baby’s room. It will be especially helpful to her husband, who often works late.

Now he’ll be able to log in at work and see the streaming video of her, she said. “At night it will make us both feel better knowing she’s sleeping well,” she said.

“We’re the only hospital in Tampa Bay that has this camera system in every room,” said Ashley Moffitt, a NicView site coordinator.

A NicView camera, mounted next to the baby’s bed, provides secure image streaming on any internet-enabled device. The camera’s images are available through a secure 256-bit SSL encryption, which is the current web standard used for online banking.

Parents control who has access to NicView’s live streaming of their infant.

Once logged in, they receive streaming images of their baby on their laptop, smartphone or tablet. Parents can also share their log-in credentials with family members – including those who live in other cities, states or countries – so they can see the baby too.

“Parents often have other children to care for or may not be able to take time off from work to come to the hospital every day,” said NICU Nurse Manager, Amy Hunt. “Life doesn’t stop. Some of the babies are here for several days or several months. Having the ability to see their child through NicView can help ease their anxiety.”

The camera runs continuously and is only temporarily taken offline when nurses are caring for the infant. When that

happens, parents and family members will see a message that says, “Care is occurring; we will be right back.”

The hospital originally purchased six NicView cameras. “Everyone here is just as equally important. We were struggling with how to share them,” said Hunt.

Buying cameras for every room was made possible by a $135,000 donation from Pam and Les Muma. The couple previously donated $3 millon to TGH to help build the NICU in memory of their daughter, Jennifer Leigh, who died three days after birth due to underdeveloped lungs.

“Having had a baby in the NICU and not being able to see her due to my hospitalization in another hospital, we knew this would be a life-changing experience for all families who have babies in the NICU,” said Pam Muma.

“When we learned of this innovation, but with only a few cameras offered to families to share, this touched our hearts and led to our desire to see every room outfitted with these special cameras,” she said. “Now, with these cameras placed in all rooms, all members of the family will be able to see their precious child 24/7 throughout the duration of their stay.”

Shannon Mancini looks on her tablet to position the newly installed NicView web camera that shows her newborn girl, Lillianna, in the Jennifer Leigh Muma Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). The camera will allow family in Lakeland to check in on

her, as well as give Shannon the ability to watch when she can’t be in the room.
