KGH Black Tie EveningA great night at the Maharaja BazaarGreen light laser will be purchased to help provide lessinvasive care

It isn’t often that one can step into Ban Righ Hall at Queen’s University and be transported to the vibrant country of India. But on October 20, the success-ful Kingston General Hospital (KGH) Black Tie Evening “Maharaja Bazaar” did just that.

Guests to the 29th annual event were treated to a wondrous evening of traditional Indian food and décor all for a good cause. The goal was to raise funds to purchase a green light laser for the KGH Urology Department. As urologist Dr. Curtis Nickel said during his speech, “sorry ladies, this year is for the men,” as the laser will be used for an important and less-invasive procedure to treat men with an enlarged, non-cancerous prostate.

The night started off with a Bhangra, a folk dance from the Northwest In-dian state of Punjab, which was cho-

reographed and performed by local dancers. (A video of the performance is posted on the UHKFdn YouTube page.)After, guests enjoyed customary Indian menu with such dishes as Pudina, Malai

Murg Tandoori or Panch Masala Mach-ali. During the meal, a live and silent

We live here too!

This year, several volun-teers and staff of from the University Hospitals Kings-ton Foundation and our families have spent more time than usual as recipi-ents of care in our hospitals.

Though we’re all personal donors to our hospitals, the act of giving becomes much more meaningful when we experience the difference that donations can make. Examples are all around us, such as when we find ourselves using the new cancer centre or visiting friends on the new Kidd 9 wing at Kingston General Hospital.

The first time I walked down the

hallway of the new Jeanne Mance 4 outpatient clinics at Hotel Dieu Hospital to attend an appointment, I felt proud of the small part I had played in creating this beautiful new space through my donations.

But even stronger was my gratitude for the thousands of others who did the same. It took all of us, working to-gether, to create a better care experience for every patient

who walks down these hallways. In big urban centres, giving and vol-

unteering can feel a little anonymous. In a community the size of ours, we have the incredible joy of making a gift and then seeing someone we care about

benefit directly from that gift.To our team, you’re not just a donor.

You’re also a neighbour, the coach of our child’s hockey team, or the person who cuts our hair. You’re the family that sponsors the theatrical performances we enjoy.

In our community, gifts don’t come from the faceless masses. They’re very, very personal. And we are touched by each one of them. In this season of giving, we thank you for your gifts to us and to the health of our families, friends and colleagues.

Season’s Greetings!

Focus on the people in our hospitals

Volunteer Services have always been a vital part of Hotel Dieu Hospital. They do more than greet you upon arrival or help you find a gift for a loved one in their gift shop. Most importantly, their philanthropic spirit will help patients and visitors to Hotel Dieu Hospital for years to come.

In any given year, over 234 active volunteers at Hotel Dieu Hospital donate over 18,675 hours of service to many areas of the hospital including the gift shop, information desk and patient care areas. They operate the Brock-view Café, the Café Express and collect clothing donations for the hospital’s Annual Coat Drive Campaign. The volunteers help the hospital become a vibrant, welcoming community.

In addition, Volunteer Services at Hotel Dieu Hospital has committed to raising $1 million for the hospital, a multi-year pledge that they steadily de-liver to the University Hospitals Kings-ton Foundation.

At their Annual General Meeting, on October 16th, Volunteer Services presented Hotel Dieu Hospital and UHKF representatives with a cheque for $115,000, bringing their total thus far to $865,000.

It is their hope at this time next year

Volunteers play vital role at Hotel Dieu

Fighting back against aneurysmsFamily’s gift enables state-of-the-art care

Lottie Bell captivated front-line caregivers as she softly spoke about the insidious impact that aneurysms have had on her family – claiming the lives of her mother, aunt and teenaged niece. That is what sparked the Belleville area woman and her brother, Dale Silver of Sydenham, in making a $35,000 gift to the University Hospitals Kingston Foundation (UHKF).

The funds – $7,000 a year over the next five years – are earmarked for ar-eas where the needs are greatest within the interventional radiology (IVR) program at Kingston General Hospital (KGH). IVR is a medical sub-specialty of radiology that features minimally-invasive image-guided procedures to diagnose and treat disease.

Using diagnostic images such as CT or MRI scans, interventional radiolo-gists are able to direct interventional instruments throughout a patient’s body. These procedures are usually performed using needles and catheters, rather than by making large incisions as in traditional surgery. For patients this often means better outcomes and a speedier recovery.

As part of the massive redevelopment program at KGH, the hospital is fortu-nate to have new IVR suites and state-of-the-art equipment, said Dr. Annette McCallum, clinical department head of diagnostic radiology. “The flexibility of this gift is most appreciated,” she said at a recent recognition event for Lottie and Dale. The funds are already being used to help optimize staff education, so that medical radiation technologists (MRTs) and nurses are trained on use of the latest equipment and techniques.

As MRT Lesa Thom said, a portion of the funds have already been put to great use as she and a colleague were able to

receive specialized education that they are now sharing with their colleagues. “It helps us assist the doctors, helps us assist the patients and to use the equipment to its full capacity. It really is amazing equipment that we have.”

This wonderful gift made by the Bell and Silver families shows the impor-tance that donations are making in health care delivery right here in Kings-ton. KGH is fortunate to have three specialized Interventional Radiologists, in a section headed up by Dr. Doug Walker, who was also on hand to thank the donors for their gift.

The donation being made by the Bell and Silver families is “significant” and will make a positive impact on out-comes for patients, Dr. McCallum said.

UHKF Board member Bittu George thanked Lottie and Dale for their gift, noting the fact they have been able to turn the tragedy they have experienced

into something positive that will benefit people across south-eastern Ontario. “It is contributions from people like you that allow us to have first-class health care. Without contributions like yours, we would not be able to do the things we do in our health care system today.”

On November 1, Dale Silver and Lottie Bell (front) were recognized for their generous donation. Pictured with them (l-r) are: UHK Foundation Board Member Bittu George, KGH Medical Department Head of Diagnostic Radiology Dr. Annette McCallum, Chief Operating Officer Jim Flett, Dale Silver, Administrative Director of Diagnostic Imaging Karen Pearson, MRT Lesa Thom, Donor Lottie Bell, MRT Lisa Gibson, IVR Head Dr. Doug Walker and UHKF Executive Director Denise Cumming.

Incredible volunteer humble in efforts

Foundation Report - Winter 2012 7

Jim Boltin was remembered at his cel-ebration of life as being an “immensely generous man - generous with his time, skills, talents, experience and resources, using these qualities to coach football, work his heart out in various charitable endeavours so that others may benefit - all of this done in a self-effacing man-ner that was a hallmark of Jim’s.” Over the past decade, we had the

wonderful fortune of getting to know Jim as he worked tirelessly behind-the-scenes of many events, raising hundreds of thousands of dollars for Kingston’s hospitals and helping UHKF foster many new relationships. We were shocked and saddened to

hear the news Jim passed away in late August.Jim was a well-known and much-

respected member of the Lion’s Club in Gananoque and was an incredible

leader of the Thousand Islands Minor Football League.Jim led a number of teams and built

relationships with professional athletes and celebrities to deliver prestigious charitable golf tournaments such as those headlined by Alyn McCauley and Jayna Hefford. He also spent countless hours developing partnerships with corporate sponsors. Jim was an incred-ible advocate for our hospitals in the Gananoque area. Jim was a passionate leader, encourag-

ing others to support his dreams and ambitions.Always humble in his efforts, Jim never

wanted to take credit for the great work that his teams accomplished. We would like to thank Jim’s wife Fran-

cine and their family for sharing their husband and father with us. A fundraising evening “Gotcha Cov-

ered” was held on Thanksgiving week-end in Gananoque in Jim’s honour.

From Page 1auction was held to add additional

funds to the fundraising amount. Nu-merous local and national businesses contributed items such as a catered dinner, an electric fireplace or original artwork. Following the dinner, you could find the guests on the dance floor dancing to Journey’s “Don’t Stop Believing” among other great songs. UHKF and KGH would like to thank all those involved with the night including the organizing commit-tee, staff at Ban Righ Hall, and all the businesses who helped make this night one to remember. Next year is the 30th annual event so stayed tuned for all the fabulous details.
