“LEBENDIGE STADT” FOUNDATION

Since the year 2000, the “Lebendige Stadt” Foundation headed by

the Chairman of the Board of Trustees, Alexander Otto, successfully

is committed to the future of our cities.

The urban diversity made of work, culture, and living needs to be

preserved and designed. Focus is placed on the areas light, green, and

design of urban space. Since the establishment, the Foundation has

initiated and supported numerous best-practice projects with an overall

volume of around 25 million euros. Minister Presidents, lord mayors,

CEOs, scientists, and leading cultural fi gures have been contributing to

this on part of the Foundation.

Apart from its function as project promoter, the Foundation under-

stands itself as initiator by supporting the exchange of knowledge and

experiences between the cities. The Foundation contributes with its

annual conferences to current urban problems and with its annual

thematically changing Foundation Award, with which innovative ideas

and concepts with particular cultural and artistic value are honored, to

the exchange of know-how between local political decision-makers and

draws attention to best-practice examples. Furthermore, the Founda-

tion reports in its Foundation Journal, which is published two times a

year, and in its publication series about diverse and interesting issues

in the cities.

BRAND – IDENTITY – HOME THE UNIQUE CITY

THE FOUNDATION AWARD

Once a year, the “Lebendige Stadt” Foundation honors in changing cate-

gories projects in cities and municipalities with best-practice character

and which are recommended for imitation.

At the beginning of each year, the Foundation calls for entries by cities,

municipalities, institutes, universities, associations, and private persons for

its Europe-wide competition. A jury with independent experts assesses the

applications and selects the winner. In the past, prizes and acknowledge-

ments were awarded for particularly innovative and successful concepts

in museums, inner-city residences, sports facilities or playgrounds and

leisure areas.

2011 – DIE UNIQUE CITY: BRAND – IDENTITY – HOME

This year, the Foundation was looking for concepts and projects that give

cities or communities – but also their districts, quarters or major areas

– an own, unique identity, that raise a high sense of identifi cation and the

feeling of home in the citizens or that even make them a brand.

Decisive were also aspects of maintenance and fi nancial viability. We are

talking about projects that have already been realized or are about to be

implemented in the near future and that could serve as model for other

cities and municipalities.

Aid project “Fortress Radeln – Shelter for children”

The musician Peter Maffay creates a refuge for traumatized children with his foundation in the Rumanian village Radeln in Siebenbürgen in which 700 inhabitants live. In a fi rst step, the vicarage and the adjoining buildings are renovated. In the thera-peutic holiday home, up to 14 children with physical and mental problems will fi nd shelter for around 2 weeks together with their supervisors. However, it will be an international place of encoun-ters. Apart from children from Rumania also children from abroad will be hosted. Model is the holiday home which the Peter Maffay foundation established on Mallorca.

Radeln is characterized by migration, unemployment, poverty, insuffi cient infrastructure, and lack of perspectives. At the same time, it incorporates great potentials due to its wonderful land-scape and untouched nature. Apart from the construction of the holiday home, the renovation of the fortress as protection-worthy cultural heritage is planned. This is to send the sign for the recon-struction of their village to the citizens of Radeln. Among others, the supply and disposal system and medical support need an extensive and intensive general overhaul. The “Lebendige Stadt” Foundation supports this project of the Peter Maffay foundation.

Since 2001, the “Lebendige Stadt” Foundation has been inviting representative from politics, economy, culture, science and government to a symposium. ACTIVITIES OF THE FOUNDATION

In addition to staging its annual European conferences, the Foundation supports projects based on creative concepts that serve as models for other municipalities and that enhance the urban living quality of towns and cities in the long term. Our objective is to play an active role in shaping the future of our towns and cities – by promoting cultural life and through science and research, the conservation of cultural values and the preservation of protected buildings. Our cities provide people with places to live and places to work – and should be alive with trade and cultural activity. Our aim is to preserve the variety and diversity. For oursel-ves and for our children. The non-profi t “Lebendige Stadt” Foundation has taken up this challenge.

EXAMPLES OF SUPPORTED PROJECTS:

“CAPITAL OF BIODIVERSITY” COMPETITION In 2010, the Foundation was staging together with the Deut-sche Umwelthilfe environmental protection organization the “Capital of Biodiversity” competition, which was part of the international “Capital of Biodiversity” project that took place at the same time in France, Spain, Hungary, and Slovakia. The goal was to identify the city that makes particular efforts to preserve and promote the diversity of ecosystems and species. Related was the aim to motivate relevant actors in the cities and municipalities to undertake greated efforts and to implement specifi c measures regarding the protection of nature and biodiversity. Nearly 900 projects were submitted in a total of six categories and assessed by a project-accom-panying specialized working group. The German competition was won by Hannover; the city mad biodiversity to one of its basic urban development targets refl ected by numerous ac-tivities, which means that those efforts were not only shown in one district. 13 other municipalities were honored for their efforts undertaken for the conservation of a versatile nature.

REDESIGN OF THE ST. NIKOLAI CHURCH COURTYARD IN LEIPZIG With the support of the “Lebendige Stadt” Foundation, the historic courtyard in front of the St. Nikolai church has been transformed into a place of peaceful refl ection. The centerpi-eces of the redesigned courtyard are the light installation of the Leipzig-based Tilo Schulz and a granite fountain desig-ned by David Chipperfi eld. The fountain operates year-round and creates a setting for communication and an oasis of tranquility. The light installation with its 150 colored “illu-minated cobblestones” symbolizes the gradual build-up of peaceful gatherings like the famous “Monday demonstra-tions” that took place in Leipzig in 1989.

ARTISTIC ILLUMINATION OF THE REICHSTAG To mark the 60th anniversary of the founding of the Federal Republic of Germany, a permanent, artistically designed lighting concept was installed at the Reichstag building in Berlin on the initiative of the “Lebendige Stadt” Foundation. The central idea of the winning design concept is to incorpo-rate all four sides of the building, and the special architectu-ral features of the façade are bathed in a tranquil, restrained, classic, and elegant light. In addition, the use of new techno-logy signifi cantly reduces the energy consumption.

AFFILIATED ASSOCIATIONSLEBENDIGER JUNGFERNSTIEG E.V.The Foundation initiated and promoted the redesign of the Jungfernstieg in Hamburg. Therefore, the Foundation called for entries for a nation-wide competition. The result is a ge-nerously dimensioned system of steps across the full width of the Jungfernstieg, extending down to the water. Thanks to the tribune-like shape of the new pier with movable benches, the Alster can be turned into a stage for cultural events of any kind. In front of the steps is a boulevard with a staggered three-axis silver linden avenue. With the aim to redesign the Jungfernstieg and based on the reason not to fi nance the re-development from public funds alone, a joint initiative of the “Lebendige Stadt” Foundation and the City of Hamburg led to the establishment of the “Förderverein Lebendiger Jung-fernstieg e.V.” [friends of the “Jungfernstieg”] by prominent Hamburg citizens in the summer of 2002. In-depth con-sultation at the earliest possible stage with all the relevant decision-makers and the parties directly affected by redeve-lopment works played a key role in the implementation and success of this large-scale project. The redevelopment of the Jungfernstieg completed in summer 2006 is a best practice example that serves as model for other cities and municipa-lities. www.lebendiger-jungfernstieg.de

LICHT-KUNST-SPEICHERSTADT E.V.(Speicherstadt Light and Art Association)The “Licht-Kunst-Speicherstadt” association is the dri-ving force behind the illuminated Speicherstadt project in Hamburg’s historic warehouse district. It was set up by entrepreneurs and private individuals in September 2009 in a joint initiative with the Hamburg Senate parliament. The illuminated Speicherstadt is funded by generous cash and non-cash donations as well as bridge sponsorships. By now, the illumination covers around 60 % of the warehouse complex. www.lichtkunst-speicherstadt.de

LEUCHTENDES RHEINPANORAMA KÖLN E.V.(Association for the Illumination of the Rhine Panorama Cologne)The Foundation initiated and promoted the illumination concept for the Rhine banks in Cologne. The harmonized play of light and dark traces the buildings contours. At the same time, energy consumption is reduced by using the latest technology.
