FOOTBALL MATH School is out, but you still need to keep your mind sharp during the summer! Just ask Joe Hortiz, the Ravens’ director of college scouting. Hortiz is responsible for seeking out the very best players in college football and determining who among them has the potential to succeed in purple and black. Led by executive vice president/general manager Ozzie Newsome, director of player personnel Eric DeCosta and Hortiz, the Ravens’ personnel department decides which players the team drafts each year. Hortiz’s findings are absolutely essential to the selection process, and because of that, he often explains that the intangibles – qualities that can’t be found in mere numbers and statistics – are just as important as the physical attributes of strength, speed and size. “The biggest thing is passion – a love of the game,” Hortiz said. “We want guys that are good team players who lead by example. [We value] guys that are going to be the first ones in and the last to leave, guys that are football junkies around the training complex, watching film and doing the extra [work] to get better.” The Ravens covet players, according to Hortiz, like cornerback Jimmy Smith from the University of Colorado and former University of Maryland wide receiver Torrey Smith. BUILDING A FOUNDATION This proved to be true when Baltimore picked Jimmy and Torrey in the first and second rounds, respectively, of the 2011 NFL Draft this past April. Jimmy Smith is known among coaching circles as a hard worker and a strong competitor. “When you watch him practice, he’s out there competing hard,” Hortiz stated. “He loves ball and he’s putting forth the effort. You hear the [Colorado coaching] staff talk about how he’s grown, the leadership role he’s taken on, and his commitment and work ethic in practice. … You really get a good grasp on [who] this kid is.” Torrey Smith is also known for being a hard worker, and he has an added virtue about him. Having overcome adversity since a very young age, Torrey emerged from a challenging childhood with a sense of maturity and leadership uncommon among his peers. While his mother worked multiple jobs, it was often Torrey’s responsibility to care for his younger siblings and help guide the family through turbulent times. “There’s going to be a period when [the NFL] is hard on Torrey Smith, when he has a bad day at practice, when he has a bad game,” Hortiz said. “It happens to everybody. But we know he can overcome adversity because he’s done it already. “Big, fast, tough, smart football players. From a football standpoint, that’s what we want,” Hortiz added. “But when you look at Torrey Smith – when you look at his personality, leadership, and his commitment to the game and his passion – he’s really what we are all about.” For Hortiz and the Ravens, it’s often character that distinguishes the great players from the average ones. “There are things that can’t be measured with a stopwatch or in height and weight,” Hortiz affirmed. “There’s a selflessness that we look for in [our] players.” Commitment. Accountability. Work ethic. Along with the ability to overcome adversity, these are the makings of a Raven. “If he has a passion for the game, that’s what you build off of,” Hortiz continued. “Everything else is a bonus. If he’s fast, great. If he’s athletic, great. But when you’re tough, smart and passionate, you’re going to have the foundation to be a successful football player.” BUILDING A FOUNDATION cont. SUMMER 2011 Jimmy Smith – 1st Round: A University of Colorado product, Smith was tabbed as one of the best cornerbacks to emerge from the 2011 NFL Draft. CB Torrey Smith – 2nd Round: Torrey Smith was a record-setting wide receiver and kickoff returner at the University of Maryland. Physical, fast and strong, Ravens coaches hope Smith will serve as a deep threat and an explosive special teams contributor. WR Jah Reid – 3rd Round: Reid looks to use his massive 6-7, 330-pound frame to dominate opponents as a tackle on the offensive line. A two-time first-team All-Conference USA selection at Central Florida, Reid will add solid depth to Baltimore’s offensive front. T Tandon Doss – 4th Round: The fourth-round selection is projected to bring athleticism and versatility to the Ravens. A triple- threat at Indiana University, Doss stood out as a wide receiver and also returned kickoffs and punts. He even took snaps at quarterback in the Hoosiers’ “Wildcat” formation. WR Anthony Allen – 7th Round: Weighing in at 230 pounds, Allen has been noticed for his strength, tenacity and ability to power through the defensive line. This former Georgia Tech Yellow Jacket hopes to complement the Ravens’ talented running back corps that is led by veteran Ray Rice. RB/FB Tyrod Taylor – 6th Round: As both the ACC Offensive Player of the Year and overall ACC Player of the Year in 2010, Taylor is known for his ability to move the football and make plays. This record-setting standout from Virginia Tech threw for a school- record 24 touchdowns last season and was also considered a potent rusher in college. QB Pernell McPhee – 5th Round: The second of two Baltimore picks in the fifth round, McPhee earned All-SEC first-team honors as a senior defensive end at Mississippi State. McPhee’s remarkable size and quickness look to aid the Ravens’ ability to stuff the run and pressure the quarterback. DE Chykie Brown – 5th Round: The former Texas Longhorn was chosen in the fifth round and has displayed a knack for press coverage and an ability to stop the run. Brown’s physical play could make him a strong asset for Chuck Pagano’s aggressive defensive scheme. BUILDING A FOUNDATION

This proved to be true when Baltimore picked Jimmy

and Torrey in the first and second rounds, respectively,

of the 2011 NFL Draft this past April.

Jimmy Smith is known among coaching circles as

a hard worker and a strong competitor. “When you

watch him practice, he’s out there competing hard,”

he has an added virtue about him. Having overcome

adversity since a very young age, Torrey emerged from

a challenging childhood with a sense of maturity and

leadership uncommon among his peers. While his

mother worked multiple jobs, it was often Torrey’s

responsibility to care for his younger siblings and help

guide the family through turbulent times.
