Fossils

What is a fossil? (page 297)

Fossils – preserved remains or evidence of ancient living things

Paleontologist – someone who studies fossils

Fossils

How do fossils form?

Most form when living things die and are buried in sediment. Over time, the sediment forms sedimentary rock.

Fossils

What are the types of fossils? (pages 300-301)

Petrified fossils – minerals replace the organism

Fossils

What are the types of fossils? (pages 300-301)

Mold – an indentation left in sedimentary rock of the organism’s shape

Fossils

What are the types of fossils? (pages 300-301)

Cast – a copy of the organism’s shape (made from the fossil mold)

Fossils

What are the types of fossils? (pages 300-301)

Carbon films – carbon left from an organism is left in the sediment

Fossils

What are the types of fossils? (pages 300-301)

Trace fossils – evidence of an organism’s activities (footprints)

Fossils

What are the types of fossils? (pages 300-301) Preserved remains – an

organism that’s been covered in a material that reduces its deterioration (organism stuck in tar, amber, or ice)

Fossils

What are the types of fossils? (pages 300-301)

Index fossils – fossils of a widely distributed organism that existed briefly. Index fossils are used to determine the relative age of rock layers.
