SCHOOLOGY
FBISD will be using Schoology this year instead of Edmodo. Class
notes will be posted on Schoology. The notes generally have
questions to be completed as we cover material in class. Therefore,
you must have notes with you in class EVERY DAY! You are required
to print the notes. Information covered in lecture is necessary for
mastery of the course.
Class Materials
Online Textbook
Each student has online access to the Pearson Chemistry
book.

2017-2018
Welcome to Environmental Systems!
This will be an exciting, and high achieving year, and I greatly
look forward to getting to know each of you. These pages contain
information about the purpose and structure of the class, what you
need to succeed in this class, and information on how to contact
me.
In Environmental Systems, students conduct laboratory and field
investigations using the scientific method and make informed
decisions using critical thinking. Students study a variety of
topics that include: biotic and abiotic factors in habitats,
ecosystems and biomes, interrelationships among resources and an
environmental system, sources and flow of energy through an
environmental system, relationship between carrying capacity and
changes in populations and ecosystems, and changes in
environments.

Attendance
Attendance is extremely important in Chemistry. Every day we
introduce different concepts and skills that are a foundation for
the information that will follow throughout the year. In the event
that a situation does occur in which you must miss school, AHS
school policy states that students have the same number of days to
make-up work as he/she was absent. (eg. 2 days absent = 2 days
make-up). If you are absent on the due date of a major project, you
are to turn that project in the first day you return.
The weekly schedule will be posted on Schoology. You should
bring a planner to class to keep track of HW assignments &
upcoming tests/quizzes. Students are responsible for all work on
days absent.
Homework
Homework will be necessary for completion of class work,
practicing problems, or to prepare for the following days activity.
The amount of homework you will have each night will vary. Homework
may be checked for a completion grade or you may have “check for
understanding” quizzes each week
Late Work
It is expected that you will turn in assignment the day they are
due. AHS late work policy will be followed. Late work will be
accepted. For each day it is late, 10 points will be taken off.
Tutorials
Please come to me or another chem teacher for help if you are
struggling! Chemistry can be one of the most difficult subjects (in
college it is often used as a “weed out” class). Do not wait to see
if you will understand it over time. Sometimes it only takes 15-20
minutes of tutoring to make a change!
Tutorial Hours: Tue 3:00 – 4:00
Retests
A student who has received less than 75% on a test does have the
option to retest. Students have 1 week from the day grades are
posted to retest. The student must come in twice during that 1 week
period. The first time is to look over their previous test and do
corrections using reference materials. The 2nd time will be to take
the retest for the unit. The maximum score that may be replaced is
75%. There are no retests for quizzes.
Study Tips/Tricks
Chemistry is like learning a new language- it is incredibly
important to practice each and every day. Here are a few things
that may help you be more successful:
-re-read your notes daily and color coordinate.
-practice assigned problems (write down questions if you get
stuck)
-arrange for tutoring immediately if you fall behind
