Pilot PC power management to assess financial value and identify risks
“The pitch was simple. Power management would save money, not adversely affect day-to-day operations, and could be implemented quickly and easily — a no-brainer.”
Piloting PC power management will help IT professionals determine:
• Scope. Identify PCs and apps that can not be power managed.
• Impact on IT. Understand the impact of power management on the network and existing client management practices.
• Group users by tolerance. Create user groups based on tolerance for PC power management to serve as the basis for policy creation.
• Policy development. Tailor your approach (e.g. “scheduled”, “always-on”, “hybrid”) and frequency (e.g. monitors off after 15 minutes, system standby after 30 minutes) by user groups.
• Business case. Estimate the financial savings potential in aggregate and per PC, along with carbon emissions savings if that’s important.
