1.3 RegulationsFormula Drift has continued to rene its rulebook andtechnical regulations year to year in terms of car and com-petition regulations.
1.3.1 Car eligibilityCars and their builds are constantly under review by theFormula Drift sta. The rule book is revised every yearto promote fair and exciting drifting. Some cars and prac-tices are written out of the rule book in order to keep arealistic and level playing eld. During the 2004 season, the Dodge Viper Competition Coupe was permitted tocompete, whereas it was ineligible in Formula Drift.Although Formula Drift does not permit front-wheeldrive cars, it does allow all-wheel drive cars to be con-verted to rear wheel drive, such as the Subaru WRX andMitsubishi EVO. In the United States, the Scion tC issold only in the FWD layout, but because it shares thesame chassis as the AWD Toyota Avensis (sold only inthe United Kingdom and Europe), it can be converted toa competition-ready RWD layout.A trademark of Formula D competition cars is the veryopen engine rulebook. Formula Drift allows engines from
4 CHAPTER 1. FORMULA D
other manufacturers to be swapped into competition cars.Engine, transmission, ECU and/or nal drive modica-tions are free, but only the rear wheels may propel thevehicle. This results in a huge variety of engine/chassiscombinations as well as huge power outputs commonly inexcess of 850+ whp. Vehicles wishing to compete for theManufacturers Championship must use an engine fromthe same manufacturer as the chassis. Engine swaps re-main very common with older models but can be seenwith new builds as well. Normally aspirated ChevroletV8 engines are often used because of their availabilityand lower operating costs.Suspension modication is widely open to developmentas long as stock pickup locations are utilized. Suspensiontuning is a vital part of any successful Formula D team.To keep cars in check Formula D institutes a maximumtire size based on the vehicles total weight.Formula Drift cars are given xed numbers for their carsand are not necessarily based on rankings.
1.3.2 Scoring and judging
Formula D uses its own scoring system that may dierfrom other drifting organizations. Often scoring systemsfor qualifying, tandem battles, and penalties are dierent.Qualifying - Formula D competitors are allowed two non-consecutive judged solo runs to post their highest possi-ble score in order to compete. The top 32 drivers withthe highest qualifying scores are entered in a competi-tion bracket pairing the highest scoring drivers against thelowest scoring drivers. 1st v. 32nd, 2nd v. 31st, 3rd v.30th, etc. The drivers are judged on line, speed, angle, and overall impact. The judges can also make additionalrequest at the drivers meeting for actions or techniquesthat will weigh in their decision making (ex; entry tech-nique, racing line, proximity, etc). Formula D drivers arescored on a points-deduction system where every driverwill start their judged run with a perfect score of 100 pts.For every mistake, points will be deducted. These pointswill vary between .25 point to the most severe mistakes(1.75).[2]Competition - The top 32 qualifying drivers are pairedup in an elimination bracket pairing the highest scoringdrivers against the lowest scoring drivers. The biggest dif-ference from qualifying is that now drivers face o headto head on the track in a tandem battle. The two cars runtogether side by side, each driver trying to show greater
skill than the other. The highest qualifying driver leadson the rst run, then on the second run the lower quali-fying driver leads. Drivers are judged on the same basiccriteria as qualifying but an emphasis is put on the inter-action between the two drivers competing head to head. The lead driver will set the pace and driving line oftentrying to produce a gap between themselves and the fol-lowing driver. The following driver will try to stay ontop of the lead driver as close as possible without mak-ing contact with their vehicle. The goal is to mimic orshadow the lead drivers run while staying on their doorthroughout the run. It is possible for either driver to wineither run. Often one driver will have a points advantagegoing into the second run. Driver mistakes (ex. 2 wheelso course, spinning out, avoidable contact, etc) can alsocause them to be given an automatic zero. The 3 judgepanel then will look at both runs and determine one ofthree outcomes; Driver 1 advances, Driver 2 advances,or if a winner can not be determined a One More Timewill be called. In the event of a One More Time thedrivers will then complete a new pair of runs. The driverswill face o again until a winner can be determined. Thewinner advance to the next bracket.Competition Time Out - Drivers have a one-time optionto utilize a Competition Time Out in order to attemptto x their vehicle. In the event that a driver or car cannot come to the start line in time for their tandem run theother driver will be allowed to run a solo lap to advance.Overtaking - Formula D rules are structured so as not toencourage drivers to overtake their opponents; doing soincurs a penalty. Overtaking is only permitted when thelead car makes a mistake such as coming to a completestop or going completely o course.[2]
The current judges are Andy Yen, Ryan Lanteigne, andBrian Eggert. Doug Artus is the Race Manager for theseries.[2]

1.7 Formula Drift television cover-age
Former Fox Soccer USA host Brandon Johnson hosted theFormula D show for G4 in 2006. Rossi Morreale wasthe shows host in 2005. Johnson was joined by Attackof the Show co-host Olivia Munn who covered the pitsand drivers during the events and drifting expert AdamMatthews who provided commentary and insight on thetandem battles. G4 aired each round on a tape-delayedbasis. Jarod DeAnda is the public address announcer ateach event, earning him the moniker, The Voice of For-mula D. In 2005, G4 used DeAndas event commentarytrack, but for 2006, used Johnson and Matthews callingeach battle like a typical play-by-play/color commenta-tor combination. Johnson and Matthews were on-site foreach event, but it sounded as if they had taped their com-mentary after the event had already taken place. Thispractice is not uncommon in the motorsports business inpost-production.In the 2005 season, there were two people working thepits driver interviewer Mayleen Ramey, who was aroving reporter for the half-hour episodes, and a secondanchor, who patrolled around the car show at each event. In 2005, G4 used three reporters for this job. Fromthe round in Wall to the round in Houston, actor EmekaNnadi held the job. At the Inneon round, Attack of theShow! co-host Kevin Pereira took the duties, while StreetFury host Big C nished things out in Chicago and Ir-windale. Also, G4 showed half-hour episodes in-betweenrounds, most of which focused on the network having itsown drift car built from scratch, with other segments fo-cusing on the aspects of drifting. One of the rst half-hour episodes in 2005 had one Formula D competitor,Chris Forsberg go to Japan, and meet up with anothercompetitor, Daijiro Yoshihara, to explore the country andget more perspective on the birth of drifting. Episodesthat featured event coverage lasted an hour-and-a-half,and featured the top 16 tandem rounds, including thosethat needed to be run again, because the judges deemedthem too close to call. These episodes aired the night af-ter the next round in the series had already taken place. In 2006, however, coverage was dramatically dierent. The half-hour episodes were gone, and event coveragewas reduced to an hour, and their scheduling was quiterandom. The Long Beach and Atlanta rounds premieredon June 18, with the Chicago round airing on July 2,and the Sonoma round airing a week after it took place.
8 CHAPTER 1. FORMULA D
During the Sonoma round, G4 noted that the Seattleround would premiere on September 10, but that datewas changed to October 8, with the last two rounds (Walland Irwindale) airing every other week afterward. Theseepisodes featured more interviews and driver proles, many of which would've been placed in a half-hour showlast year, and many of the tandem battles have been cutout, and any battle that needed to be run again did nothave its second run shown. This led to some criticismfrom those in the drifting community, including fans andsome Formula D drivers. At the 2006 SEMA Show in Las Vegas, Formula D co-founders Jim Liaw and Ryan Sage announced that the se-ries would have a new television partner in 2007. Thatpartner was ESPN2. Each round began airing in a one-hour block on November 15 with the Long Beach round. All subsequent airings were supposed to be every Thurs-day afterward, but beginning with the Evergreen Speed-way round on December 5, the air dates for new roundsswitched to Wednesday. The ESPN deal lasted just one season. SPEED Chan-nel will air all rounds of the 2008 Formula D season, aswell as the World Championship, scheduled for after theIrwindale round. Airings will take place on Sundays, be-ginning with the Long Beach round on October 26. Allairings will begin at 4 PM Eastern.[10]
For 2010 Formula Drift announces a comprehensive raceprogramming schedule with VERSUS in which Drift-ing, the fastest-growing motorsport, will slide into morethan 75 million U.S. homes. The seven-stop FormulaDRIFT Championship Series programs will air over four-teen Sundays during the 2 PM (EST) / 11 AM (PST) timeslot beginning Sunday, August 30. Each episode willshowcase all the on- and o-track action as the worldstop drift drivers battle for the coveted title of FormulaDRIFT Champion. The rst episode, airing on August30, will feature a comprehensive overview of the sportand drivers. Each episode will re-air the week follow-ing the initial airing.[11] Coverage is slated to remain thesame for the 2011 season. In 2012 NBCs merger with Comcast, Comcasts sportschannels were combined under the NBC Sports division,in an arrangement known as the NBC Sports Group, which also comprises Golf Channel, the Comcast Sport-sNet regional sports networks, and Versus, which was re-launched as the NBC Sports Network on January 2, 2012.
1.8 Internet CoverageIn 2010 Formula D joined forces with Justin.tv to bring alive stream of all 7 events. All rounds were broadcastvia Justin.tv complete with practices and all rounds ofcompetition were included. During the 2010 season over1,000,000 viewers tuned in to watch the live action unfoldover the 7 Pro Championship events.2014 Formula D partnered with Daily Motion for its livestream.
1.9 Print CoverageAt the 2010 SEMA show, FD co-founder Jim Liaw an-nounced the Formula Drift would begin the quarterlypublication of a Formula Drifts magazine in 2011. Thepublication will be handled by Haymarket Media Group.
